Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Hey kiddo - way to not address the issues people have with hiring McNamara.

Can we please drop the “people just want change for change’s sake” attempt at narrative spin? Because it’s a strawman and complete bullcrap. And the folks trying to sell it are doing so because the case for Gerry is weak and against is strong.

if you favor someone else instead of him, that is fair,

if you think he shouldn’t be considered at all because of previous ties to the program, I don’t agree with that logic. And that is a common narrative.

If his name was Gerry Smith and he played his college basketball at Utah Valley State no one here would even think of him as a possible candidate at Syracuse.

Again with the Motte & Bailey nonsense! It’s endless with Gerry fans.

The issue IS NOT that he shouldn’t be considered because of previous ties with the program. The issue is there is no way in hell he would be considered if he didn’t have ties to the program. And “ties to the program” is a really bad reason to elevate someone from irrelevant in a job search to legitimate candidate. You’re misrepresenting the “common narrative” to make it look weaker than it is. Stop it, kiddo.

I like GMAC just not as our next coach. I’ve watched a lot of his games and his offense is Doty and little else in big moments. At Syracuse he’s never going to have the best player on the floor. I haven’t seen his ability to scheme on offense to get people wide open looks. I just see Doty going one on five. He has good talent for his conference, but can he get top talent at SU? I doubt it. Unless SU’s NIL budget gets closer to $12 million I doubt he will win. The one thing I keep going back to is Hodgson is a great recruiter. I see the portal becoming a little less of a factor if the rule changes so that players can only transfer one time. I think it’s closer than people think. I will not be surprised if we see someone that might surprise us as our next coach and that scares the hell out of me.

He has more than “ties to the program.” He was a 4 year player and assistant coach for 12 years. He knows the school and fans and they know him. That’s more than “ties to the program “

It’s hard not to read the obvious signs on the tea leaves all point to BH. Even that interview when he spoke fondly of Red.

Your kidding right.. It’s about overall fit .. Sure a former player with success who is a winner is going to be tied to the job and seen as a amazing fit … Most people are tying CBH to the job because he is a NYer .. Otherwise he may not be on the radar this early in his career .. there are other successful coaches who this board doesn’t infatuate over cause they don’t fit, like J. Calhoun and Casey Alexander

Then why are BC and Georgia Tech considering him?

BH was on the radar here before he went to USF when he was humming with an Ark St program that hadn’t been relevant for a post season berth in almost 30 years. Look it it up- there were posts going around back then on here and he was being noticed by the talking heads as well some.

because they are desperate and hoping that the stuff they fling at the wall sticks. He's the hot new fresh face.

I was responding to this statement “The issue is there is no way in hell he would be considered if he didn’t have ties to the program.”

That’s objectively untrue.

I’m not saying Gerry should be our #1 choice. I’m advocating for him being a viable candidate. We could do much worse (and have).

He can have any opinion he wants. But claiming that’s what I’m objecting to is a Motte and Bailey fallacy. You’re intentionally conflating a controversial, hard-to-defend claim (Boeheim can express his opinion to anyone at any time and it’s always OK to do so). with a similar, easy-to-defend, or common-sense claim (Boeheim is entitled to an opinion).

He could have taken his opinion to the new incoming leadership and expressed it to them privately and behind closed doors. That would have been an acceptable and maybe even commendable approach. Instead he chose to express his opinion publicly in order to try to create pressure from fans in the new leadership. That is unprofessional and slimy, so I understand why you don’t want to defend the actual issue. Someone commented that he’s got strained relations with the administration at Syracuse - doing things this way a big part of why that is likely true.

What’s bizarre to me is it’s such a bad idea as well - if I’m just coming in, the last thing I’m going to do is give in to pressure from a former head coach because he’ll know he can just run to the media to get what he wants. Considering he left the program in turmoil after a decade of mediocrity - and still needed to be shoved out the door - I’d be very concerned he’s more interested in his own personal agenda to the detriment of the program. I’d absolutely listen to him if he came to my office, and it might carry some weight. This approach would carry weight - it’s just that I wouldn’t hire Gerry now under any circumstances.
I am quoting exactly what you said. If it’s a hard to defend claim then maybe it’s because it’s incorrect and you shouldn’t have said it. You are conflating my objection to your specific statement with other Gmac issues.
