I guess I'm confused about how GMac's playing career will impact coaching. Is there a chance a game of 1 on 1 will break out with the opposing coach to decide something?

If so, I might have to reconsider this whole idea.

I think it's important to keep in mind while there have been many very successful players who have done well as coaches in a variety of sports, there are also many who have not done as well.
Maybe we’re thinking this all wrong, Michael Jordan could coach here right? No experience coaching, but what a hire!

Back to the title of this thread.
I have no idea whether G-Mac would be a successful head coach.

But I do know he is a flat out winner.
That's his personality...not merely his playing ability.
That trait alone provides hope that he wouldn't settle for anything less than winning.

Please list some of his recruiting wins.

On the current roster, Girard, Brown, Taylor and Copeland along with a couple of assists.

No thank you. I am not in the Boeheim-tree-camp. Unless we want Pitino for 3-5 years which i'm back and forth on that

We won’t win 10 &@k!ng games with GMac as head coach. Not 10 &@k!ng games!!!

Go back 10 years too. Any top 100 guys? More than 1 or 2?

So you didn’t really want an answer? Why did I use the current roster? Because it’s more recent and easier to remember.

Just how are some of you pushing Gmac???

He has no other coaching experience outside of mentoring under JB and playing under JB. Is he just going to fire up the google and YouTube university videos to learn some new defenses and offensive schemes when he gets the reigns? How does he know anything intricately outside of the stuff we're doing now that isn't working?

Please stop saying he's paid his dues. He's got as steady and stable of a job as can be in a nomadic cut through proffession. Dudes had the chance to raise a family and collect a big check without ever worrying about being let go, for regime change or under performance reasons, while all his peers are buying a yearly subscriptions to Uhaul.

If he was hungry and wanted the reigns he should have took on some risk, spread his wings and flew the nest to show he can run a program. He's taken the easy path, which is fine for him, its his life, but hard no from me thinking he's earned a shot at HC.

If I’m interviewing for a HC job, I may not put that on my resume.

You mention them because you know his recruiting is low tier and there isn’t much else.

I've heard that before. Isn't the basic theory that the great players have some difficulty relating to players who the game doesn't come quite as easily to? And also that average players have to rely more on their intelligence as opposed to strictly their athletic ability?

Great players also made more money and don't need the work :)

I didn’t realize we had a roster full of 5 star studs.

Look, JB's recent struggles provide air cover on this, but it wasn't long ago that there was acknowledgement on the board that GMAC's recruiting was known more for weird near misses than the accomplishments of guys he brought in.

I don't mean to dredge that up. But if part of the case for GMAC is his track record as a recruiter, that actually works against him.

FWIW, those guys had 247Sports rankings of 202, 247, 128 and 140.

I don't want to pile on Gerry, and I understand that it may be unfair to judge any of our assistants recruiting ability since Buddy landed at SU, but we need a lot better players than what these guys have been producing.
