GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

Boeheim kept his assistants for years he didn't churn and burn thru a million different assistant coaches. That's why u don't see 50 different assistants at other schools. I love how people like to knock down how good of a head coach JB was. Mostly the people that do are young and don't no better.

You no better.

That's a statement not a question.

You’re looking at this through only one perspective. Filtered ‘orange.’

1) If no other schools tried to poach our assistants or if they didn’t get HC jobs elsewhere, is that ’loyalty’ or ‘undesirability?’
2) If you’re magnanimous, wouldn’t you want your associates to ‘go forth and prosper?’
3) No many people are knocking what JB meant to SU. Some of us recognize that we’re able to characterize his era with more than just one simple statement. And that it wasn’t a consistent, binary thing, without its faults and wrinkles. Some people don’t seem to be able to do that.
4) No, many of us oldsters do no [sic] better.

Wow! Quite a good (or great) article by Donna. I haven't seen Syracuse.com do a similar article about the current SU coach. But maybe I missed it. So, Mr. Wildhack, it looks like from this article that at least one former Syracuse assistant can coach. Maybe JB knew something!

For those who don't subscribe to Syracuse.com, here are some quotes from the article:

"Gerry McNamara lived and died with each play here, demonstrating the depth of his big competitive heart in what would become a signature win of his early head coaching career."

“It’s torture, you know?,” he said afterward. “But us hoop junkies, we love the torture. That’s what it’s about.”

"He famously hates losing. He talked after the Cornell game about his sleep depravity as he prepared for the Big Red and imagined all the 3-point shots Cornell might rain on the Saints. Siena gave up 15 made 3-point shots in its Dec. 20 loss to Holy Cross and it haunted him."

"His players talked later about the detailed scouting plan and their ability to execute it."

“Every day you step on the floor you’re gonna get coached and I just feel like I’ve gotten so much better since the start of the year having a legend like GMac coaching me and trusting in me,” said Gavin Doty, a Siena freshman from Fulton who scored 16 and grabbed eight rebounds in Monday’s win.

“He loves playing hard. That’s the first thing he said to me. He said if you play hard for me, then we’re gonna get along.”

“It’s been pretty good, but you know how I am. We’re not going to chase perfection, but we’re going to chase our team ceiling. I’d say that’s the best way to put it,” McNamara said.

“He has a good group and I think that’s why the kids love playing for him,” Blackwell said. “He’ll get on them, he’ll yell at them, he’ll coach them hard. Then the next minute, he’s loving them and cracking jokes and making them laugh. They want to come to practice, they enjoy coming. Collectively as a group, I think they enjoy being around us.”

This Siena team, he [Peter Carey] said, is the “most connected” squad he’s been a part of.

“So that’s been huge,” Carey said. “And also, (McNamara’s) got such a high IQ of the game. Just like even on the fly during the game you’ll see him call stuff out to guys on the court and you see it work right in front of your eyes and you know you gotta listen to him.”

“It’s been awesome. It really has,” he [McNamara] said. “I just like this group. I couldn’t ask for a better group to coach. Kids that give you everything.”

Red gets another year. If he doesn't do well and GMac does, it's possible it results in Red out and GMac in.

LOL.

Only one of those things is possible if Red doesn’t do well next season.

It would be absolute AD malfeasance to can Red and then not do an extensive National search for the best possible candidate.

Spoiler - GMac, regardless of how well he does or doesn’t do at Siena-
should not warrant consideration after only 2 seasons of HC at a mid major.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I can definitely see SU do that. Especially with their supposed financial constraints. If we can't afford a plane ride to games (again, supposedly), we can't afford a proven coach.

GMac has already positioned Siena to have a big improvement over last year. If next year ends with a MAC title for them and Red flames out, I wouldn't be surprised if GMac is brought in.

Well said, well spoken :) I have nothing to add except to rhetorically ask has anyone enjoyed this football season less since Fran isn't an alum?

He famously hates losing? I mean, Who likes losing? If they fire Red, Gmac isn’t the answer, at least not anytime soon. He needs way more seasoning as a head coach and recruiter.

Ok, so maybe the coach after the next coach.

Here's a very short segment of JB's interview with Michael Kay on the YES Network about 13 years ago.

Only way GMac moves on soon is a surprise NCAA run which is a steep climb for his current team.
That sad I think in a few years GMac is going to have a better resume and better prospects than Red. His team is much better organized than Red has ours at the moment and he's in year two.

Does everyone know there are other coaches out there besides Red and Gmac, the two guys who have been on the bench for our entire downturn? If anyone thinks we should actually go after gmac they have learned absolutely nothing. Holy crap the fact that people would even consider it. It would literally be repeating the same mistake we just made with Red. Keep it in the fam to make a few alums and board members happy while the fanbase gets to see what the underside of the rock at rock bottom looks like. It would be one of the worst moves of all time.

The fact this even needs to be said is deeply deeeeeply disturbing

You’re instantly discounting GMac because he’s part of the family? What if he shows that he’s a good HC? He’s doing well in his first year considering Siena won a total of 4 games last year. If he has a good showing this year and goes to the tournament next year, teams other than Syracuse will start to look at him.

This wouldn’t be a Red pt 2 situation, he’s cutting his teeth at a lower level like most coaches do and would only be considered if he does well. He should be judged independently on his own merit from this year on.

Best game of Peter Carey's career tonight as he played 38:31 and scored 21 points, had 8 boards, 3 blocks , 3 assists and one steal before fouling out in the 2nd OT as Siena beat Manhattan 103-95.

Mr. Carey sat a few rows ahead of us in the VIP section and needless to say, he was extremely thrilled.

Like I said last game, GMAC has really shortened his roster and basically has 6 guys that really buy into his system. Which, to the chagrin of many on here, is not a ton different than Red's. Lots of high ball screens, but they are a very patient offense, and will pass out for a three if open, otherwise try to get the ball down to Carey.

Siena was down 23-10 early but rallied to take a one point lead at halftime. In the first OT, they were down six with 46 seconds to go but pressure defense worked and a missed FT that helped.

Gmac keeps winning. Good for him.
Well, he's 7-7 and 2-1 in the MAAC. Based on what I've seen so far, many of the remaining MAAC games will be nip and tuck. If he ends up at .500 then it's a huge win. If they can go 10-7 or 11-6 in the remaining games then it will be a remarkable first year.

But, they really need to stay healthy, stay out of foul trouble and really try to develop another guy or two into the rotation. But it's tough when your top six are much more efficient.

Kind of like our last game. I saw some people question why Taylor and Cuffe played like the entire 2nd half. Either they missed Bell and Moore's first half or they don't understand why you don't sit your most efficient players. Both Red and Gerry have that issue, and hopefully when JJ comes back, the minutes will be split between the best six or seven.

All true. But they won something like 5 games last year and he is a first year coach. Nice to see that he is competitive in conference and gutting out close wins. That stuff matters in how he is perceived and the job he is doing. Hope he keeps it going and his team punches above its weight class in a game or two.
