GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

All true. But they won something like 5 games last year and he is a first year coach. Nice to see that he is competitive in conference and gutting out close wins. That stuff matters in how he is perceived and the job he is doing. Hope he keeps it going and his team punches above its weight class in a game or two.
I think they only had 4 wins last year.

Best game of Peter Carey's career tonight as he played 38:31 and scored 21 points, had 8 boards, 3 blocks , 3 assists and one steal before fouling out in the 2nd OT as Siena beat Manhattan 103-95.

Mr. Carey sat a few rows ahead of us in the VIP section and needless to say, he was extremely thrilled.

Like I said last game, GMAC has really shortened his roster and basically has 6 guys that really buy into his system. Which, to the chagrin of many on here, is not a ton different than Red's. Lots of high ball screens, but they are a very patient offense, and will pass out for a three if open, otherwise try to get the ball down to Carey.

Siena was down 23-10 early but rallied to take a one point lead at halftime. In the first OT, they were down six with 46 seconds to go but pressure defense worked and a missed FT that helped.

Thank you for the report. I love this for Peter.

Gavin Doty is a local player from Fulton, NY who’s a freshman there.
It’s been a small sample size of games I’ve watched (I’m a Siena alum), but this Doty kid has lots of potential. He had about 5 steals today when it mattered most at the end of the game, and was super clutch on Friday as well. Seems to have the intangibles to me. Has proven he can hit big time free throws under pressure. Obviously from Fulton so if he gets to the point where he is considering transferring up, SU would make a ton of sense given the proximity and connections

One of my sons is a Siena grad and plans to go to a game at Siena sometime in the next week. Do you know why Carey only played like 8 minutes today despite having no fouls? I know he’s very foul prone but wasn’t an issue today in their one point loss to Iona. Doty was a phenomenal player for Fulton, went to prep school one year and returned back to Fulton for his senior year.

it looked like his leg was bothering him when he came out for the second half. Plus Marcus Jackson had a horrific ankle injury which left Siena very shorthanded.

I know what turnovers are. What's this thing you call a... "steal"?

I do not, I only tuned in for the ending of the Iona game. Carey seemed to play pretty well Friday vs Manhattan when I was watching

Just got back from tonight's Siena game vs Sacred Heart. Their second half was the best Siena has looked all year. Last game they lost by 18 to Quinnipiac after being down 30. Gerry in the paper talked about emotion and hustle.

Tonight at halftime they were losing by eight. They were switching up from mtm to a zone. Secret Heart was red hot and was shooting 50% at the half from three.

Second half was unreal. Siena outscored them 54-29 in the last 20 minutes. They turned up the defense and shot the ball very well. The team definitely had emotion and hustle.

After the team made a coiple threes in a row, GMac even high fived the player who made it as they ran back on defense, although it was more a low five. It was either Doty or Coyle, and GMac was really getting into it.

So, I've mentioned this before that Gerry has really shortened his bench, especially after Marcus Jackson has been injured. Tonight four guys played over 39 minutes and Carey and the 7'1 freshman center split the five spot.

Carey was tentative in the first half and had some foul trouble as he has a tendency not to hold his hands straight up. He's more at at 45 degree angle and picked up a few fouls that way. In his absence, his freshman replacement had a great game shooting 8/9. But Peter was more active in the 2nd half and dig a good job on defense.

Siena doesn't have the biggest crowds either, as they are rebuilding the fanbase after only four wins last season. But, especially in the 2nd half, the crowd was really energized, as were the players and it was a lot more enjoyable than being at the dome Tuesday night vs Louisville. Lets hope Saturday goes better.

For anyone who lives in the Capital Region, or if you want to make an easy two hour drive, I recommend coming to see Siena play. They are now 8-9 and tied for fifth at 3-3 in conference. The MAAC is down this year so it's possible they could end up with 15 or 16 wins, but that's a long way away.

I had just looked at the box, checked out Carey's line, checked the minutes... Couldn't help but think that Gerry had that JB rotation going.

Thank you for the recap.

I had decent seats behind the bench at BC this past Saturday, and though it was a feel good win, I knew what we were in for with Louisville this Tuesday . . .

I'm probably gonna drive the hour plus a bit to Merrimack this Saturday to support Gerry even though it conflicts with the ND game.
I can always catch the replay on the ESPN App.

The rotation is more out of necessity. Last home game vs Iona, he needed to put a backup in at guard and the kid he picked who almost never plays had four turnovers in maybe five possessions.

Which brings up an argument that's been on this board since Adam and Eve, is how are kids going to develop if they don't get minutes.

But, I've always felt that's what practice is for. Let your five best players play. That's what Red is trying to figure out and the same with Gerry.

Merrimack has a pretty good team this year and playing on the road in the MAAC is usually no joke. Merrimack is new to the conference this season so I'm not familiar with how their crowds are and stuff.

But, this is big game for Siena as they laid an egg in their last road game.

I watched the game on the ESPN + app hoping to see my son and 2 granddaughters who were planning to attend (my son is a Siena grad). Siena looked as bad in the first half as they looked great in the 2nd half. The zone and their defensive intensity made a difference for sure but the arrival of their Lacrosse team who sat together under the basket standing the entire half, leading cheers, totally changed the energy in the arena. The team fed off their energy, reminding me how important energetic positive home crowds can affect a team. The broadcasters even mentioned the crowd energy that the lacrosse team created.

Gerry has some promising young players. Doty, the Fulton kid, (15 pts, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 0 to’s), that 7’1” Bradford kid from NC (15 points in 19 min) are both freshman, Carey’s a soph (8 pts, 2 blocks), as is Coyle who scored 17 pts, Freeman(20 pts) and Shoats(18pts) are juniors. Sadly they lost a guard, Jackson, a junior transfer last week, who suffered a bad injury last game and will probably be out for quite a while. They are much improved from last year under Gerry but are still a player or 2 away from being a top team in their conference however having no seniors, they should be on a future upward trajectory. This year they need to battle every game to win. Interesting that Gerry switched and adjusted strategies from their normal m2m to zone successfully in the 2nd half.

Looked up the ass’t coaches, and noticed that Ben Lee came from Hop’s staff at Washington to Siena.

I say again - and it is not related to Red getting the gig as we know he was next in line for a variety of basketball and non-hoop issues - Siena at least looks like they are developing a culture of how they want to play. They also make a lot of in-game adjustments which is difficult playing only 6 guys.

That job is going to be a grind because i think Doty and the 7 footer get poached, and that is going to be an annual thing at that level.

Yes, Siena has had a history of their best players being poached. Hopefully for Gerry, he can thwart that history.

Good to see Carey at his level, but still needs to learn how to defend without fouling and play with intention. He's a very reactive kid.

And good for Gerry, take the licks and bumps at a lower school, figure out what works for you, and work up from there. It's gotta be very hard to jump into the driver's seat.

Siena could have a better record. They have a few heartbreaking losses. Doty is a kid we should look at down the road if he continues to improve.
They had 3 wins in OT too though. They have to work hard against every team to win, Gerry seems to be able to motivate them to compete and battle despite not having a consistent “go to star” player but their 2 upperclassmen starters lead the way. There are no sure wins for this team yet.

But that is the one thing that Siena has that Syracuse doesn.t.
A culture that reflects their coach and frankly his never say die attitude.
Obvious as a player, and what he is using to develop the culture of his team.
Sadly, this is the one ingredient that SU sorely needs.
We need the basketball form of DART.
