I should have been more clear:

Coaches who succeeded?

Adrian Autry: Syracuse (2023–present)
Scott Hicks: Le Moyne (1992–1997); Albany (1997–2000); Loyola (MD) (2000–2004)

Ralph Willard: NY Knicks, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Louisville
And plenty players who didn't coach for him right but are coaching now? Jason Hart, Ryan Blackwell... I'm sure there are others.

With the Pistons having such a great year, can one say Troy Weaver is #2 on the list behind Pitino?

So you’re looking for a list of failed coaches, save Pitino, who would have thrived regardless?

Thanks for supporting my point, however unwittingly.

And remember: this is over 40 years.

40 years.
Save Pitino??? Really?

I'm not sure how he can be dismissed as not even a "shrub"

The fact is that Louis Orr had some decent moments.

Willard did as well.

Mike Hopkins was the two-time Pac 12 Coach of the Year.

Brendan Malone had a really good NBA career.

So did Weaver.

Did any of these guys win NCAA Championships? No.

But I'm not sure that's a fair test.

Jim Boeheim won one NC in 40 years. Does that mean that he was a "failed coach" 39 times?

Weaver was fired from the Pistons in 2024 and Trajon Langdon took over in 2024. Weaver is the GM of the Pelcians under Joe Dumars where the dynamic duo traded away 2 1st round draft picks, one unprotected to Atlanta to select Derik Queen with the 13th pick last year. Queen has been very good and has a lot of potential but not protecting the 2026 pick that was traded to Atlanta can probably be considered one of the worst trades over the last 15-20 years in the NBA, if it proves to be a 1-3 pick considering that talent in this years draft. The Pelicans are currently 12-37. Like I said, Queen has shown a ton of potential and most wouldn't have much issue with the trade if it was top 3-5 protected. Weaver looks a little foolish there to say the least. Hopkins is currently an assistant with the Pelicans as well. I saw him ( Hop) before a game over the Holidays and still not sure of there is a nicer guy out there than Mike Hopkins. ( I did happen to be wearing a Pearl T Shirt) Hop's role with the Pelicans is more player development than anything, they have 3 rookies and 1 2nd year guy that do get significant playing time.

If Weaver is #2 on the tree, well I truly don't know what to say but Dumars hired Weaver who hired Hop so those guys are certainly loyal to their guys, make no mistake about it. Would not be surprised to see Hop move up the chain in assistants next year, he is very well liked by staff and players which comes as zero surprise.

I also don’t think the success of a coach should be judged on how his assistants do. Just let JB be his own thing. His job was to win not develop assistant coaches. He can be great at one thing and not great at the other and that’s fine. The coaching tree thing matters more to egos.

If he continues to do well, I would think he's a hot commodity for Big East programs.
I also contend he’s be a good fit at Penn State. He’s a known commodity for their fan base and nothing gets their few basketball fans going.

(I sat next to some big Penn state boosters at our Philly game earlier this year and all they wanted to talk about it was Gerry).

He probably fits well in the Big Ten. That would be a good place for him I agree.

I think he needs to move up at least once, and perhaps even twice, before reaching the top 5 conferences. Penn State would be interesting though. Not much to lose at 9-11 and last place in the B1G.

Can you imagine the reaction of the Syracuse fans who never wanted GMac to coach our team if he was ever successful in the B1G and won the B1G title, especially if it were at PSU?

I don't think coaches should ONLY be judged at how the assistants do... but it is an interesting data point.

Look at the assistant coaches that worked with Dick MacPherson. There was a lot of coaching talent cycling through his staffs. Not surprisingly, it all came together eventually.

As long as Syracuse is successful it shouldn't really matter. IMO, we need an outsider at this time to atleast reenergize and stabilize the program, getting a consistent, successful, and regularly tournament bound product above a 9 seed. If we get ourselves a Dan Hurley type who overachieves and is young enough to be here for 2 decades, amazing. But if GMAC is successful and Syracuse is a stabilized and consistent tournament product, there will likely be an opportunity in 10-15 years where the paths could cross again where GMAC as HC makes sense. If we wanted to do the GMAC HC option, the time was 3 years ago and honestly we may have done him a blessing in disguise by not giving him the job. If he's meant to be the head coach at Syracuse that time will come later.

PSU not being good at basketball is one of college sports true mysteries. They are within close driving distance to the fertile recruiting grounds of NY, Philly, Baltimore and DC. They have limitless resources at their disposal. Obviously they're a football school first, but there's no logical reason they shouldn't be a solid basketball program like say Ohio State or Wisconsin is.

They need a new arena. Their place now might be the dreariest venue in college basketball.
