But is Shafer the right hire? I thought he was going to be better than Marrone as a head coach, but he may have hired people that were his coaching buddies, rather than the correct people for the jobs.

The offense is non-competitive. No adjustments, the QB decision is questionable at best and the offensive line has regressed it seems.

Our defense has talent but is very susceptible to big plays and the routine seemingly. Very good on 1st and 10 with running plays - outside of that, mediocre at best.

I would not be surprised by another 2-10 season. Two wins coming the next two weeks.

Totally unacceptable given the talent on this team. The cupboard is FAR from bare.

Far too early to be even considering this imo

I hope so. But was it far too early after the West Virginia game to consider GRob a bust?...

Just sayin'.

Yes. I am. And those who aren't as critical as I am aren't looking in the mirror.

We have very large issues. And I am hopeful they are addressed. But it doesn't change the fact that some of the hires on the coaching staff were questionable.

We just lost to number 19 Northwestern and a very good Penn State team. We have one of the hardest first two weeks in college football. If this team would have stunk up both games and we would have seen zero improvement from week 1 to week 2 I would start to think your way. We put up 487 yards against a very good defense. We are starting to see some of the young playmakers develop. These are signs of good coaching and getting the correct hires. We have all been spoiled by having a very good QB go the last three years. Give this team time and after four games we will be 2-2 and finding our way. Bowl game is still within our reach. So keep calm and carry on.

SS was and still is the correct hire. He'll get the ship righted and we'll be glad we have him. What better candidates were there?

I was hoping his preseason quotes about not being "the fastest, biggest, or most athletic" was just coach speak but obviously he already was expecting some of what we saw before game 1. On the plus side, 8 of our remaining 10 games won't feature opponents as talented as our first 2. How the staff and players react the rest of the season will be more telling abiut which coaches were and were not the proper hires.

Very good defense ... did you see what a frosh Cal QB did to them last week? I do agree with the rest of your post however.

I'm sure SS is going to sit back and look to see what he could have done better to have this team ready to play at a top level. My guess is that he'll be extremely hard on himself and learns from what just happened. That's what good coaches do and it will be his responsibility to get things in order with his staff and players. He's always been pretty good with adjustments as a DC and now we'll see how he handles that as the HC.

They definitely are an opportunistic one, that's for sure. You hang a curve, they hit it out.

Wow, way way too early.

We are 2 games into SS's first season and have played road games against B1G Ten teams that went a combined 18-7 last year, and 11-5 in the B1g Ten.

2-10?!?! I'll take those odds. You're being far too critical. Sheesh.

If, and that's a big If, Shafer isn't successful as a HC, it will not be due to lack of effort. He'll demand that everyone gets better this week and unlike the G-Rob era, this team hasn't quit. No matter how disappointing last night's game was, the players competed until the end.

Like Marrone, he might need to tweak his staff before next year, but let's give it a little more time before we jump off the cliff.

The OP has a legitimate statement. I remember riding back to South Campus after GROB's first game against WVU and my friend who has of the smartest sports minds I know saying Greg Robinson has no clue how to run a football team and we will suck with him. While I with my Orange glasses said we will be fine. Watching SS these two games he has no clue yet how to be a HC on the sidelines. From the stands in the opener he looked nuts on the sidelines and scared me. His coaching decision have infuriated me in both games. In the opening game we had the ball on our 30 yard line tied 3-3 with 50 seconds in the first half and he played it safe and conservative and didn't try to score before halftime, and yesterday down 13-34 on the Northwestern 41 he punts on a 4th and 9 when we had some momentum. How many sissy I am going to always punt coaches in a row are we going to have. I don't care we lost as I predicted we would lose I am more upset at how disorganized we are. We are going to win our next two games, but I have lost faith in SS and I don't think outside of beating one of Georgia Tech/NC State/Maryland he can win me back this year. To be a successful college coach you need to either be able to recruit good talent or be a coach who can maximize what you have and scheme and coach up your players. Doug Marrone was the latter and I don't know what Shafer is.

Am I the only one who wonders why we choose to schedule so aggressively in our first couple of games?
We've been digging out of the GRob abyss for years now, yet we still schedule- especially the first few games- like we're a perennial top 25 team. Wouldn't it be more practical to serve up some cupcakes those first few weeks, just to get our feet wet?
I mean PSU, USC, NW, etc. these last 2 years...:noidea:

IMHO Shafer will prove to be a great hire. Give the dude a chance.

From the stands, I was convinced that they'd go for it on 4th when it was 3rd and 4. I believe that the penalty had a major impact on the punt vs. go-for-it decision.

people on this board are way to critical of a punting choice down 3 td's same for the chat room during the game. at that point it was not about winning but of getting the team to play well.

the tide started to turn midway in the 2nd quarter but its hard to see with all the Int's.. without those we probably score 1-2 more times. the same for throwing the QB under the bus.. there are bigger pictures things to look at than a QB. you want every player to play thinking if he screws up he is done for the season? Allen threw more good passes than he did vs PSU, but he wasnt throwing into 5 yd windows and he made a few bad throws.. its gonna happen.. Hunt played one series and threw one ball that should have been picked as well..

I don't think it's too early to start this talk. The entire community was far too slow to pull the trigger on firing Grobber.

Well I've got news for Syracuse fans, at least when Grob was here people could still recall the good times. Kids today don't think Syracuse has ever been relevant. We don't have the same time to waste. If this goes south into a 2-10/3-9 season we need to use some of that bball/ACC money to make a big hire. I suggest Petrino or Tressel, but the faux moralists on the board will scoff at that.

You play to win the game your on your opponent's 41 after just scoring a TD to start the 2nd half its 4th and 9 and if you punt you are only gaining 20-30 yards it ended up being stupid as the punter kicked it into the endzone and why even continue trying if your not going to try and score there to get it to 20-34. Our defense could barely stop NU and you want to punt? The decision to punt was chicken$ hit and showed me all I need to know about Shafer. Northwestern lost a game in 2008 to Michigan State when they were up 34-3 in the 3rd quarter and Michigan State came back to win so I don't think you ever give up even though the chances for a comeback were highly doubtful. Punting there told the team we don't think you can win and we want as much field position as we can have to prevent them from scoring again and making the final score more of a blowout.

The penalty didn't change how many points we needed.

The decision to punt there was a signal that the staff accepted the loss.
