This is where I lose you, cuseguy. I live in CT too, so I experience the same dynamic as you do (although probably somewhat less since Fairfield County is not nearly the UConn hotbed as the rest of the state). But you're projecting your proximity to UConn, and Rutgers, fans as to why this is a "rivalry" to you. I bet most CNYers don't know any UConn or Rutgers grads. Any rivalry would be from what happens on the field/court, and our games with Rutgers have never, ever been meaningful.
Meanwhile there are lot of CNY transplants in the mid-Atlantic. I suspect once we start playing NC State, for example, they'll feel the same heat as you do with UConn.
Ultimately this is why I've been so frustrated in the Big East, particularly since 2005. I know zero Louisville, Cincy, DePaul and USF grads. I know one Marquette grad. Hell, I work in Manhattan and I don't know more than a few Seton Hall grads, and I can count on one hand the number of Providence grads I know.
Yet, I know several folks who went to BC, MD, UVA, UNC, Duke, Wake, even FSU. These are name-brand schools that actually have fanbases. It's why the ACC media deal is so valuable despite the on-field results being similar (at best) to the BE in recent years.
All of the rivalry stuff depends on SU being good. The reason why we developed a nice little rivalry with VaTech in the 90s was because we were playing meaningful games against them. If we end up back in the top 25 regularly, and play a similarly ranked Clemson team every year, for example, we'll develop the same kind of heat to that series. If Maryland gets good again, or BC, or Pitt, and we play meaningful games against them, we'll have some nice regional rivalries. All depends on the quality of us and the opponent.
