HC Job Attractiveness: SU 2024

I always felt Arizona was a great comp for us. 1 title and multiple final fours. Good consistent program. It has no where near our community support but were always good under Lute Olsen. Since then they have had patches of success and a few years of struggling but rarely have been terrible. I think that is where we are heading.
Arizona would be in better shape if their last coach wasn’t caught cheating.

Why does Boeheim deserve 2 more years? I can get behind 1 more if he agrees to do a farewell tour and announce it like K has this year but he has to agree to that.

He doesn’t deserve to finish the year It’s getting comical at this point. The employee should have no say when he leaves. You don’t perform you have to go

What do you think will magically happen in 2024? He’s not going to retire.

I’d think it’s embarrassing to coach against your best friend who’s program keeps rolling along while you’re just turning your program into a season of Full House. Yet, here we are.

What’s with the disrespect to Full House? Especially this close to Bob Sagets death.

how rude GIF

Not at all. The over reaction is strong here. In fact, maybe the job is more attractive if you can have a chance of showing positive progress in year 1 and 2. Imagine the opposite of coming in to replace a HOF coach who was on a streak of 30 win seasons. That is virtually a no win and any coach accepting that job would have a good chance of being canned within 3 years even with reasonably good performance. That would reduce the attractiveness to some.
This is a pretty on-the-nose take

I agree. I wouldn't have even let him fly back on the team plane yesterday after I canned him. Make him Uber back.

You call into sports talk radio I bet?

Curious how JB has cited Duke & UNC being correct in successor being internal for continuity - ask UNC fans how they're feeling about that right now. We should really be looking at Arizona.

In the case of Arizona, look what they did to turn the ship towards a top 5 ranking in YEAR 1 of a new coach. Ignored the chatter of "family candidates" and hired the best person for the job. Many "program people" wanted someone internal. Don't think they're complaining now.

Though only an assistant at Gonzaga, known as one of the best RECRUITERS in the country and the gamble is paying off. Cuse MUST do their due diligence for outside hires. Best person for the job, end of story.

I think it will be attractive. I don’t see extremely, unless SU increases the pay extremely
If syracuse wants to even pretend to still care about sports, they will need to pay up for a coach. If they choose not to pay up it is because they no longer sports as a viable option to drive revenue, simple as that.

As much as it may pain me to say, it’s a top 25 job without question. That being said, there are very few high major established and successful coaches who will leave for anything other than one of the top 6 or 7 jobs (i.e. Self from Illinois to Kansas). That doesn’t mean you can’t get a really good coach. It just means that it will be someone who hasn’t had success at a high major program (i.e. Nate Oats at Buffalo or Hurley at URI). Or you could stay in house and likely be in the market for another coach in a few years at which point the job will be less attractive.

So the cuse HC job will be attractive. Let me see, I think we should get Greg Popovich as the HC. Then on the bench should be Pat Riley as one bench coach, Phil Jackson with Tex Winter as the other combo bench coach, Rick Pitino on the recruiting trail.

I would be 1000 pct fine with Red. He knows the game so much more than people think and loves recruiting. His charisma is unmatched
Had pristine AAU connections also

Here's the thing, bulldog. There's no doubt in my mind that Red would have better chemistry with players and recruits than Boeheim does. I'm sure he's forgotten more about basketball than 99% of the posters will ever know.

But he's been an assistant college basketball coach for about 30 years, and has had ZERO offers from any program at any level to be a head coach.

I just want to point out, that's the same number of offers to be a college head coach that you have had. That should be instructive for our fan base about how the rest of the college basketball landscape views his aptitude, but I think that point is lost on some.
I mean all due respect here RF but if we are talking about the narrative here can we at least get the facts right. Red has been an assistant no where near 30 years. 15…in different phases

The job is as attractive as what we are willing to pay, and if and how the current guy leaves.

I think we need to buckle up.
Willing to pay in a multitude of ways…no coach of any stature is coming here without a few commitment to NIL…

UA made the right hire in hindsight but there was nearly a revolt here when they did. Keep in mind the school had other variables in play and was making a “clean” break

The job has great foundational pieces in place that a lot of people will be interested.

Having said that, any coach worth hiring is going to want a detailed plan around our NIL approach and how are we going to generate opportunities for our guys. That and how much we’ll pay is going to determine the quality of candidate we get.

Great post.

Shouldn’t take long to fix that though. In football it takes years. In hoops, it can change in one year.

Maybe the “man the program has bottomed out” makes it easier for the next guy to “bring it back”.
And our level of “bottoming out” isn’t even that bad. We made the Sweet 16 last season and hopefully finish above .500 this season. It’s not like we’ve been stuck in the conference cellar. Arizona had a rough season last year by their standards and are top 5 in the country this season with a new coach (Tommy Lloyd). Btw, there were several people on here that mentioned Lloyd as a possible JB replacement. Too bad we never jumped on that.
