here comes temple

exactly, we have a decent non con, homes games or not. When you play USC I dont care who else we play. Making a BOWL GAME and getting momo heading into the ACC next year is the best case scenario and the only one that matters to me. We do need 6 legit home games, as a diehard tailgator I need 6 not 5... if my math skills are correct that is 2 less home games then last year and that will kill my buzz.

We're playing 2 B1G schools and the #1 team in the country. Not as bad of a schedule as you are making it out to be.

Yeah, we were supposed to have 8 conference games, 2 B1G schools and USC. Probably would have worked in a 1AA, which is normal for most schools. Schedule was set. Then everything changed. You just can't find quality opponents in that short of time, unless you want to play all road games. In a weird way, Gross's best move (the ACC) combined with a short term backfire on USC being in NYC (very short term, no one will care after 2012).

Come 2013, we have 9 ACC conf games, a game with Penn State, and then a future series with ND. The appeal of our schedule will probably never be an issue again so everyone enjoy it while you can for 2012.

I understand the consternation at the rate of increase, but SU's preferred seating is a total steal compared to just about every other BCS program (including the crappy one's).

My uncle has preferred seats at Oregon State and it's insane what he has to fork over to keep them.

While that's certainly true, SU probably didn't do themselves any favors with their pricing strategies. They are going to have to keep selling the fact that it's the cheapest place to get a good seat to 1A football (no matter how much big time appeal is lacking). Because they created such a large price variance between the cheap seats and the good seats in a stadium where there are really no bad seats. And now we're a stadium that looks ridiculous on TV because no one is on the sidelines but the end zones are packed. For $99 per year, why not?

Future ACC schedules have to help. At the end of the day once it's fixed, call it a cost of doing business for being stuck in the Big East from 2004 to 2012.

Yeah just one game at Michigan is $85 for a seat. Just regular end zone season tickets are $480 minimum...I am so glad I grew up an SU fan. I couldn't find their preferred seating prices, but I am guessing it is an astronomical amount for good seats.

I am a little bummed our schedule is going to be lackluster, but I'll look at the bright side. We have a reasonable shot at eight wins and a conference title, which could pay off huge dividends when it comes to recruiting.

This wouldn't make any MAC teams available to play. This would reduce the number of MAC teams from 14 to 13. They'd find another way to get each team eight conference games.

Correct, none of the MAC teams would be available for another game as the MAC would go back to the way they scheduled before adding UMass (which had 13 teams): The division with 7 teams plays the rest of their division and 2 from the other division. The division with 6 teams plays the rest of their division and 3 from the other. To add UMass they moved Bowling Green to the West division, so would they move them back to East (i.e. essentially going back to what it was and just trading UMass for Temple) or keep them in the West?

The MAC has not released dates for their conference games, so they can still move things around without impacting the fans as much.

This is...all true.

I'd ask Akron first...they have a first class facility for a return game. Might be tougher to get a 2 for 1 at this late date.

Second choice would be EMU...but we could drive a harder bargain with them and get a 2 for 1.

Both are in our recruiting areas.

Why should we be so adamant about leveraging 2 for 1 with a team? When we move to the ACC, we'll only have 3 non conference games. When we had to look for 5 games a year, I understand guaranteeing multiple home dates for the future. But with limited opportunities from here on out, we should be looking to play more different teams to expose our brand to new markets and keep the fans interested. Do we really need/want to play Eastern Michigan 3 times? There's a difference between playing USC and Notre Dame in consecutive years and playing EMU in a 3 game series...unless we're just looking an excuse to hang out with Rob Murphy

After next year, I hope SU never plays schools like Akron or Eastern Michigan.

There really are only 2 OOC games in play excluding the Meadowlands.

Even if such schools play exclusively at SU, not sure what purpose is served. And hard to imagine great recruits being impressed by a one time game at these type of schools. Play a game of interest to fans and if a punching bag is needed, try to get a regional one.

After next year our OOC will consist of 1 FCS, 1 non-BCS, and 1 BCS

We are going to be in an unevern schedule with the ACC 5/4

We need extra home games (vs MAC level schools) to plug into the schedule when we have 4 ACC home games. With the Met Life series and uneven ACC schedules it becomes more problematic to get at least 6 home games every year at the Carrier Dome.

Here's what they should do:

Years in which they have 5 conference home games
5 conference home games
1 FCS
1 Minnesota/Northwestern-quality AQ away
1 Meadowlands game
4 conference road games

Years in which they have 4 conference home games
4 conference home games
1 FCS
1 Minnesota/Northwestern-quality AQ home
1 Meadowlands opponent away or MAC-quality non-AQ bodybag game
5 conference road games

That's 6 home games or 6+NJ home games every year...some years there could be 7 home games.

Wow, just wow at that price. I wouldn't even pay that for season tickets to one of the top tier schools.

If you wanted "Preferred A" seats following the 2003 championship season for basketball, the donation was $10,000 for new ticket holders. Yes, you read that right.

Still is.

embarrassing.

I live in Philly and have seen the Owls play.

They are not embarrasing by any stretch.

And they play in the Linc - a very nice venue.

Attendance remains a problem - this is a professional sports town - but this is not the program we saw in the early 2000s.

Beat Rutgers in 2003 and beat Temple in 2004 and the history of SU football is much different.

Ugh.

The Big East continuing to dig its own grave even deeper!

Two times in the 2000s.

And Temple beat Va Tech one of those years as well.

We lost one game I think in 2002 because our kicker, Colin Barber, missed a PAT at the end and lost the 2004 game because we just could not stop QB Walter Washington - Damien's 200 yard rush day was not enough to overcome that performance.

Yes, I think Temple will pose a decent challenge for Big East teams - the Owls should have beaten Penn State last year.

Interesting.

Explain that.

In what sense is the BE "digging its own grave deeper"?

Well they invited Boise for a Power Rating Bump...and it could backfire on them. Already some talk that Boise and SDSU might just stay in the MWC/Alliance. What if Boise leaves but SDSU stays? What if Boise's coach leaves, or they don't find another Kellen Moore?

They are rumored to bring in Temple. You get this amazing fan base.

Now, Louisville is rumored next to bolt. Essentially the geography of the league doesn't make sense. They could've suceeded if they kept TCU, Houston and SMU as a Texas flank but now the league seems like a desparate holding cell for the last few good teams with a whole bunch of newbies, geographic outliers and chronic underacheivers. Then we have the Catholic Mafia and their agendas.....

This league will fail within 5 years.

In 2002 Robin led us on a last minute scoring drive. He hit Jared Jones with a TD pass with 30 seconds left. Barber's kick hit the left upright and over 17,000 delirious Temple fans rejoiced. Both teams entered the game with identical 1-4 records. Even with Super Bowel hero David Tyree in the lineup we couldn't pull off a miracle. He did catch a 17 yard pass in that final drive. Jamel Riddle had a 60 yard catch and run for our other TD.

That was Temple's first win against us since 1983. Little did we know that that season would begin the downward spiral of the football program which still has not yet fully recovered. SU had not started off 1 and 5 in the sixteen previous seasons. As I recall Riddle was ruled ineligible for the his senior season after a lengthy wait for word from the NCAA. Such a shame for a program which was desperate for talent. On the day he had nine catches for 145 yards, a career high and 4 punt returns for 43 yards.

That 2004 game was frustrating as hell. We made Washington look like an All American as he kept running the QB draw and we never made an adjustment. (I just threw something across the room)
Why did you have to bring that up?;) They beat us 34-24 and Washington carried the ball 29 times for 184 yards and three TD's he was 10 for 19 passing with one TD. That was the beginning of the Perry Patterson era. PP hooked up with converted db Steve Gregory 7 times for 87 yards. Diamond Ferri played offense, defense and special teams. Something he would do again the next week as he almost single handidly destroyed the Beagles only BCS bowl hope. For that we should take up a collection and send it to the young man.

As far as Temple beating Va Tech they had a very close game against them in 2003 but fell short of the upset losing 23-24, that's the last the two have played. Temple's last win over VPI was in 1998 when they won on the road 28-24.

As the Big East keeps adding more and more dreck, the addage their sticking to is that the next TV deal is going to be this massive windfall. So now you have 12 mouths to feed in football, and what kind of value have you added? Temple, Houston, SMU, San Diego State, Memphis? These five schools can't bring enough revenue to balance out the additional mouths.

The league itself may get a big increase, but now you have to gain 50% more revenue on the football side just to stay at the level you're at now. Yeah, that's not going to happen with those four schools that bring nothing as far as TV sets. There's a reason they were in ConferenceUSA and the MAC until now and those leagues have little value. All you've done is watered down an already terrible product, losing arguably your three most valuable programs with a fourth with its bags packed.

It seems to me that getting Boise State was a great move.

I guess you can draw conclusions based on rumors.

But rumors are just rumors - not fact.

At this point, I think the BE is doing a very solid job building the football conference.

As far as what will happen in five years - nobody knows.

Nobody suspected five years ago that Nebraska would end up in the Big Ten or Colorado in the Pac 12.

Five years in college football these days is a lifetime away - so applying that time line to the BE really means nothing at this point.

Check his stats.

Walter Washington had big games against many teams.

He ran and threw very well that whole season.
