Hodg GameDay: USF v. Charlotte, AAC Conference Semi 3pm

So, when Hodge gets USF into the Final Four, we can't hire him until April?
I hope he goes as deep as possible. If he's our HC and he bring most of his staff along with him, I want those guys to get as much experience as possible.

Plus, it will begin the process of converting LAorange44

It’s not just that it’s also execution

Execution against a 16 loss team.
Wichita St will be a nice test as they split in the regular season.
The real test will be the ACC. He'll need horses for this to succeed in the ACC

You always need the requisite horses for the level of play... Regardless of coach.

Stable needs to be solid and fit for purpose .

And once again - Hodg had to throw this team together on very short notice.

And clearly did a pretty damn good job of it.

Between him bringing a handful of his current players, a handful of ours that we want back, and the portal -
I have zero doubt he’d have sufficient horses to be competitive with his system in the ACC in Year One.

They could get an at-large bid. If they win, they probably top out at a 10 seed. Lose, and they probably get the 11 play-in seed or get left out totally.
they are right at the cusp, 49 in the NET, lose and I don’t think they get an at-large, you have to be in the 40s and low 40s at that

USF is 8th in the nation at scoring at over 88pg. They are executing against more than just the 16 loss teams.

They also run a lot of different sets - I know you were questioning whether they did.

But your point about the jump to the ACC is a good one. There is no guarantee that Hodge will be a can't miss success at the next level. There is absolutely risk in the projection. He is going to need an overall talent bump, more size, good to great guard play, and multiple shooters to compete with the big dogs in the ACC. But that's a risk worth taking given his system, his success, and the intangibles he brings with his presence, media savvy, and backstory.

Well, Miami (Ohio) is 64 in the NET and everyone seems to think they will get in.

I think that's right around where St. John's got in one year, they were about 64, I think that's the lowest in the history of the NET

More confident in him making the jump than any other candidate. He clearly knows how to recruit to his system. It’s not like South Florida had the best raw talent in that league. That belonged to Memphis and they stink. Coaching matters in college basketball.

Agreed. My first concern is that I believe he needs to “talent up” here. I’d like a couple of his USF guys here, but not much more than that.

What 'backstory'?

I hope we're doing a national search, & if Hodgson is the best option after the national search, great. I'm all in.

I do like some things I see, the deciciveness of the shooters, the movement off ball. Its a play the game approach and not a running plays approach. The off ball rainman abacus stuff I don't know about that. Where are people getting this from?

Works when your horses are better than the opponents. Worried what happens if they aren't, or when it faces an opponent with a strategy to shut it down. He'll need horses like we had in Andy Rautins era.

Don't want a repeat of orange is the new fast. Hope we're not picking a guy just bc his team plays fast. When Dino realized he didn't have the horses to play fast at SU, he pretty quickly started playing slow.

Yes, you have the go out and get real racehorses for the stable.

...but comparing one of the best young bball recruiters in the country (Hodg) to grandpa Babers, isn't exactly apples to apples, as recruiting prowess goes... Babers was never that.

Babers couldn't even fill out an entire depth chart, let alone get the caliber of players we needed consistently... It was remedial by the end and not even covering the basics.

There’s a lot more to his system than playing fast. Rebounding and 50/50 balls are musts for him. And again he doesn’t have the best raw talent in that conference. Enis was a D2 player. He will find guys to fit his system.
