Hofstra Postgame

Lots to complain about, but I think the main reason we lost the game because of Kyle's PnR defense. He's been great all season, aggressive in challenging the ball handler before switching back to his original man. This is the first team that quickly dribbled away from the pick, forcing Kyle to switch and stick with the guard. Except he didn't stick with the guard. He left the dribbler before our guard could recover, or in some cases, the guard did a full switch to Kyle's guy. Either way, Kyle left the ball-handler open from three and he made the shot. Every time. I think that alone cost us 12 points.

One play in particular, JJ took a weird path to recover to his man and Kyle basically body-checked JJ out of the play when heading back inside before JJ was anywhere near recovering. Wide open three.

PnR has been great this year but today, Kyle was dry-rub-esque. Which is pretty bad.

Hey watch it. When I was in school, the bonnies were our arch rivals

More of a nemisis!

It's funny you guys should mention the Bonnies because the first thing this game remineded me of was when Hagan dominated, I believe Ross Kindle, and did whatever he pleased during the ECAC playoff game...much like the guard from Hofstra did yesterday.

Ok the brand of Syracuse will always be known in basketball. But let’s be real here (I’m not arguing just asking a couple of questions)…
is it a top 10/15 paying job? No
Is it top 10/15 NiL bank roll? No
Is it top 10/15 in season tickets ? No
Is it top 10/15 in nachos grande? Heck yes

But honestly - they missed the ball twice. Once with hop the next with Oats. If anyone thinks the next coach is going to be a “big name” you are absolutely out of your mind. I will debate this til the end of time. It will never happen. They are not and will not pull a successful coach from another program. They will go after an up and coming assistant or someone who was decent who recently struggled if you’re talking “name”.

This job isn’t as attractive as everyone thinks. The brand is strong but there is no way a coach who is making 4-5m somewhere else in a successful program is gonna say - ya know what I want - 2 million a year just because they get fans when they play Duke.
They should probably look at dropping ticket prices then because paying the same prices as schools that actually want to invest in winning is ridiculous.

Don’t mean to pile on your friend, but attendance was never really a problem until last year when it fell off a cliff. That said they have to pay 3-4 million to get someone good and it can’t be a retread.

Now, I plan on having a red sox podcast. I wish I knew how I did it to get inside info for them like I get for Syracuse hoop.
The funny thing is that there's farrrrrr less "inside info" for pro teams than there is for college. I suspect that's because pro teams have an actual, real media that covers them. It's in a reporter's best interest to break stories and reveal "inside info".

Most of the insider stuff I read about SU sports would simply show up in a story on the website of the Boston Globe or Mass Live for the pro teams I follow.

College media is way too chummy with the program they cover to act the same way. Plus, there's the weird booster dynamic where money buys one access and information. That has to be protected for it to have value.

The whiplash regarding money is so baffling.

6 months ago we were told we're fine with NIL. Great even. We can get who we want. Resources are all set.

Now, we're poor. Or something.

If SU doesn't want to, or can't, fund their basketball program in a way that allows them to compete at the highest levels, then they should seriously consider leaving the ACC and joining the Big East.

I mean it. All I hear now is how we're resource strapped and can't expect to compete. I kinda get that for every other sport... but not hoops. Either we get a head coach who can resuscitate our moribund fundraising operation, or we find a level that we can actually compete at.

We are an excuse machine

How is UConn doing it in a lower level league? Hmmm they have a top coach?

The main reason the team lost was because the offense looked like a 3rd grade basketball team when they switched to a zone. They were trying to set high screens when facing a zone, WTH?

Yelled high post for like 10 straight minutes.

Another main reason was the goofy tech and subsequent run. Benching White actually hurt the offense. Selfish in a multitude of ways.

Kyle was actually a reason it wasn’t a blowout.

Kyle the main reason SU lost (roll eyes).

High screens aren't necessarily a bad idea. Pretty common tactic to try to pick one of the guys at the top of the zone to make it easier to split them. The issue with that is our guards never really tried to use the screen to get downhill. Also never really made the relatively simple pass to White at the FT line when he wasn't screening.

Teams are going are going to zone us to death this year. All of our players are either poor shooters, slow shooters, or both with the exception of Kingz (and even he is only at 31% from 3 due to his cold start to the season but I tend to be confident that he's still a good shooter). Even if it isn't technically a zone like Hofstra was running, it'll be man but with the paint absolutely packed with help defenders (this is more like what Houston was running against us). Not only does it take away our guards' driving ability (which with the exception of George, is the one thing our guards do well), but it forces them to rely on their passing ability (with the exception of George, is probably what our guards are worst at) and their shooting ability (which none of our guards are good at besides Kingz if you want to call him a guard). When we do get the ball to White or Kyle at the FT line, they've been fairly good at hitting that high-low pass, but with how poor we shoot the ball, any look we get against zone defense is likely going to be highly contested.

Something, something, no football. Meanwhile they won 9 games and should’ve beat us at full strength this year
I don’t get the benefit to the ACC if we aren’t seriously competing for the playoff (which we aren’t ever).

Sure we get more money but low class/no budget UConn seems to do halfway decently no?

Think they could have brought Kyle to the high post more since he’s a better passer than White. White can do more off the dribble to force matchups, but doesn’t see the court as well.

White is athletic enough to take a pass at the block from the high post and do something with it.

Incredible Hofstra ran the zone that much and I think there was only one lob finish when Kyle hit White (not sure if they were playing zone or not). SU have the athletes to carve that up. Hope they adjust.

Bottom line is this. Syracuse WAS a top 10/top 15 basketball program and Autry is not the guy to coach this team. Need to make a change. This is a very attractive job!
Had to fix it for current reality...

Or at least schedule the games in a smaller venue. 8k in the dome is a mausoleum.

Other teams with more size and athleticism might be able to make that initial pass to the high post more difficult, but we should have been able to just throw it nice and high for White and Kyle all game and work from there pretty easily. I really don't understand why JJ and Kiyan were so hesitant to just pass them the ball.

I don't think that's feasible. The Dome is a HUGE part of this program's brand and allure. No one wants to come to SU to play at the War Memorial.
Oh I know, just saying. The fans have stuck with this program’s mediocrity for a decade and the attendance seemed to stay more or less the same but the signs of it cratering are more than apparent.

the nightmares of that game is down to just one a week. Thanks for reminding me

Oddly, the first trip down when they went zone, Sadiq went to the high post, got the ball, and made a play.

He went there sparingly after that. When he did, I saw JJ and others looking for him but couldn't, or didn't, make the pass.

cameron indoor holds 9k . McKale center (az) holds 14k . rupp 20k. Crisler Center (mich) 12k .
since when does capacity translate to success. an empty Dome is no advantage or draw.

As I said, playing in the Done is a huge part of the allure of playing for SU. Recruits and transfers don’t dive into attendance figures. They assume the place will be full.

my point was playing in a venue that is packed and loud is better than playing in an empty barn. we can't pack a 30k arena regularly anymore. .realistically maybe we only need 15 to 20k seats .

Well, there isn’t a 15-20K seat arena in Syracuse and one isn’t being built anytime soon.
