Holding on Wake but Dino Declines?!

Other factors go into it. He makes the FG to cut it to 8. That gives us the ball with 4 minutes to go so we can run our regular offense and then get the ball again after half. We could potentially score twice before Wake even sees the ball again. Instead they get a TD to cut it to 4 and we get the ball with no time left in the quarter . Not to mention you only rush 3 which would give back the 10 yards at best . That was the worst call so far this sesson
Dino makes decisions that aren't solid. He either doesn’t have the time and or mental capacity to analyze and make good decisions.

The fact that he actually verbally defended this choice is indicative that he truly doesn’t comprehend the situation.
In his mind i truly believe he made a decision based on the other team having to make a first down vs just having to gain enough yards to get back into field goal range which is scary.

You are forgetting the game situation. We had a 21 to 10 lead. Even if they make the FG it is at worst 21 - 13 at the half. Plus there were two minutes plus on the clock. The way our o was rolling at that point in the game, excellent chance we would get 3 or even 7 back. dinos penalty accept was one of the all time dumbest coaching decisions I have ever seen. I was cursing the tv as I watched, this is not a hindsight post.

also factor in risk of some sort of a penalty that would give them an auto first down.

it was atrocious and it was a no upside inexcusable game changing blunder.
It was a horrible choke decision. Why would you ever give the 2nd best QB in the ACC another chance. I couldn't believe it. I cant think of any other football coach who would have made the decision Dino did.

Thats what i dont get. People act like its such a bad thing to make a kicker attempt a career long field goal. it doesnt matter how good he is since its always worth 3 points. Instead he gives one of the best offenses in the ACC another down and then plays super soft on them to at best only keep them to where they were going to kick if the penalty was declined. There was no "+EV" choice" by taking it and then running that defense.

Kickers do that often, especially with no wind. In the game is different isn't it?

It’s just like with great 3pt shooters in practice, vs games.

It’s a whole lot harder to hit them when there’s game pressure, crowd noise, and the entire other team is trying to stop you and your team.

I don’t care if he was hitting FG’s from the opposite end zone.
He’s never hit from 50+ in his career.
Make him kick it.

AND - even if he does, it’s still a win for the D, and you get the ball back with sufficient time to score yourself.

Dino got some combo of greedy, nervous, and over-confident in the D.

The odds of holding them to 10 yards or less, when playing a ridiculously soft zone like that, are really low.

After watching mason crosby and the bengals kicker miss 5 straight field goals i once again question Babers worst coaching decision again and again and again and again and again.
There were missed kicks all over the place yesterday.

He needs to remember who he is: An offensive first coach who wants to run a fast tempo and score a lot of points with a defense that plays just well enough to keep the other team from doing the same.
Ha. After 6 years I’d say he is a defense first coach with once in a great while an offense that plays well enough to win a game.

I was annoyed with the decision but I at least got the math.

I hated the decision to try the 45 yarder vs going for it on fourth and short in second half. With the way Andre is kicking and our run game we had a better shot at getting two than that field goal. It was a huge momentum shift.
We could have iced the game…

In my opinion his career long would’ve been the FG he would’ve split the uprights with if Dino declined.
Who cares? You take giving up a 51 yard FG rather than give their QB and 9 a chance to make it closer.

Mason almost cost me 1300 bucks yesterday.

he was kicking them from 55-60 in warmups and never missed.
at best, that observation from any HC after the fact is a rationalization. i'm positive going into the game DB was already aware of what that K could do and from what distance. when making these observations as a fan, you have to keep in mind those kicks are against air, without having to worry about timing/snap/placement, and the ball is always perfectly placed in a kicking holder.

I agree. The reasoning he gave for accepting the penalty was even more concerning than the decision.

Rewatching the WF game this morning.

There was a weird exchange between Monroe and Dino right before the decision to accept the penalty. Not sure what was being said:

“We’re having a lot of issues here”.

“Well, candlesticks make a nice wedding gift.”

With Dino's extreme affection for movies/quotes, etc., perhaps this may have been a more applicable recent quote from Dino relative to Maximus; "Stay with me! If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!" ;):)

Another thing to consider, a D penalty gives Wake an automatic 1st down. Too much can go wrong. Giving up more than 10 yards or having a penalty is a risk. The reward is they no longer have a 50/50 shot at 3 points. In what was expected to be a high scoring game, 3 points is nothing. It is actually a win.
