Honestly, the more I thought about it

Eh?

Who has McDonald brought in, other then maybe Ishmael (who took OV's to Cincinatti, and Illinois so that's debatable), that we couldn't have got in the past?

His "recruiter" label is vastly over rated, or at least here it has been.

its lot easier to recruit when you are a coach for the schools Mcdonald use to work for. Not a fan of his but we need to give this staff a couple of more recruiting classes before we run them out of town. just wish he would adjust scheme to talent on the field.

Which lends itself to the question, if McDonald can't recruit here than who can? He's a proven recruiter. That's my whole point, people keep asking for big time recruiters we get one and results are ok but not great, what does that tell you about the product these guys are trying to sell? The product stinks pretty much everywhere.

oc was fine on friday

Did you really just say that the OC was fine on Friday...what game were you watching? Couldn't have been the SU vs. Louisville game.

Like I said, he's a proven recruiter. People need to look around and quit blaming assistants for lack of recruiting. Syracuse is never going to bring in 4 and5 star guys. Recruit best you can and develop the talent. If we want elite speed you better find kids at unheralded programs or with little football experience or guys that mayor may not qualify. If you are looking for quality assistants and a few years down the road a new HC show me a guy that has done more with less and has a proven track record as such. I don't like assistants from factory schools because they aren't prepared to recruit at Syracuse. I think both are coordinators are lacking.

For example I thought the Diaco hire at UCONN was terrible because that's great he did well at nd but BFD. Much rather have a proven HC from the Mac or d2 level.

he called a fine game missed 2 tds by execution. Hunt didn't play well either

Sort of a chicken or egg comes first scenario. The alumni aren't going to start pouring in donations until they see a better product on the field. We won't have a better product on the field until we see more money spent on the football program. It's circular reasoning and frustrating at the same time.

This x 44,000,000

Absolutely dead on. Urban Meyer couldn't recruit here right now. I mean that.

Not really though.

My point was that I don't think Spence recruited at all.

For whatever issues people have with McDonald, he is out there giving it his all to sell the program. As I posted a few weeks ago, I think when Marrone got to know Spence a little more, I don't think he had him heading out to living rooms.

OC is fine. It's execution.

Missed throws, drops, lack of speed, penalties.

When Hackett was here I could at least see what he was attempting to do. I didn't bandwagon that he was terrible because I felt a large portion of the blame was in talent, lack of execution as a result of the talent, and not the way the game was called. I didn't think he was perfect, you could see how he grew and adjusted in the time he was here. He changed what he did and when he did it significantly.

GM seems to be just throwing out plays, at least at times, with no real understanding of everything involved in calling plays or making adjustments. There is no flow, there seems to be no effort to stick with what works, it's hard to understand what the game plan was going into the game, is the offense really designed for our players or designed on what we wish we were. However, I can see at times what he's trying to do. I just don't think he's very good at setting it all up. He could really benefit from having someone with a lot of experience being there as a mentor for him. I wonder if Marrone did this for Hackett.

I think it's possible that GM can become a decent play caller, his value right now is being a really good recruiter at a school very few HS big time players are dying to come to (maybe none). And what is his experience coaching WR's successfully? The more I think of the recruiting part of all of this, the more I think GM needs to be given a chance to be successful BUT not the way things are currently. Hire a coach with a lot of OC experience to "coach" the WR's and don't tell anyone he's also acting as an advisory to help GM learn how to be successful as an OC. That way there is no butt hurt or public embarrassment.

IDK. This season is so frustrating I have no idea what to think at this point.

I see some sense of the plan throw a bunch of short horizontal passes then we defense plays for it we burn em over top

We get what we put in and what we pay for. Bush league financial commitment, hire on the cheap, hc and assistants, struggle to get adequate facilities, struggle to create buzz, when we do create any the program quickly lays a turd and let's the air out, has happened for years. Attendance continues to get worse and we are down to just the die hards. The run at the end of 2012 was about as good as it gets but even earlier in that year people thought Hackett and Marrone needed to be canned.

It has to start with the university and a much larger showing of commitment and a major fund raisng effort done by professionals. Money is the only answer. I will be watching, I like shafer a lot but what we are seeing now isn't worth the cost of donations and preferred A. It's a joke for the consumer.

Didn't SU spend over a mil for Gary Gait last year??? Just saying...

I thought it was around 750k

Every time I see that it makes me angry. Guy is a good coach, and can't beat Maryland. What's Desko make? That's stupid money for women's lax, a sport we are good but not great in.

Not sure how anyone can say the OC did fine on Friday night. Again, resorting to gimmick plays to try and get in the end zone isn't a positive sign.

SU needs to step up the commitment to football and it goes beyond $. The joke of an Orange Out is a perfect example of people who just have no clue how to try and connect with the fans.

As for raising money, that wouldn't be an issue if SU made adjustments like bringing back some of the benefits that Gross eliminated. It just can't be about getting the Falks and Steiners of the world to donate. Also as many others have said on this board, the football ticket/donation structure needs to be scrapped.

"At Arkansas, White met George McDonald, who pressed head coach Scott Shafer to bring the youngster to Syracuse. A couple months later he is the khaki-wearing, big-office owning, always-smiling head of SU recruiting."

If only Eric White could put some pads on.
