we wouldn't get one recruit next year without this move. What kid would go to a school without knowing who the next coach was going to be?Why don't they keep the current path then and he retires next year? because of one recruiting class?
How do you?
I hear you LI... I just think that a safe response for SU was to extend...That gives them time. As far as anyone knows that extension could be a year, 2 years or 4. The fact that an extension was signed and pushed out the same day as Hop leaving tells me that the University wanted to be sure that the news of what appears to be a stabilizing decision has been made. I just think the longer SU takes to make the change, the more difficult and messy it becomes potentially. That is the worst case scenario -one year.
He needs to either stay here for 4-5 years or step down. We can't have this nonsense going on right now.

Jim has no intention of retiring. He doesn't want to quit. Hop knows it. He was smart to leave.
This was getting to be FSU all over again.
This seems like chicken and egg scenario...Not sure we can definitely say what started what. One could argue that Jim's continued indecisiveness finally caused Hop to make the leap. The true behind the scenes story will come out someday... Likely not anytime soon though.I should know better than to think someone older than me would get a Star Wars reference.
Hop made the 1st move in this dance by interviewing for and accepting the UW job.
Maybe he didn't want to wait another year.
Maybe he simply wanted to be closer to his family in Cali. It'd be nice for his parents to see their grandchildren regularly.

JB wants to DEFY the NCAA. Can you blame him?Jim has no intention of retiring. He doesn't want to quit. Hop knows it. He was smart to leave.

JB power play then?Omg with the "Hop was squeezed out or told he was not head coach in waiting" stuff.
Folks, that did not happen.
Did. NOT. Happen.

But if JB made it clear that he still wanted to coach beyond next season, isn't that essentially putting Hop on a guilt trip? Is it really that different than forcing hop out? For better or worse a contact and timeline were agreed to, and it sounds like JB threw a hissy fit. True or false?Omg with the "Hop was squeezed out or told he was not head coach in waiting" stuff.

SU had an assistant coach take a head coaching job. No big deal. The whole coach in waiting thing was bullstuff from the beginning. Hop was a good guy and a good coach. Glad to have had him at SU for 20+ years. I still kind of look at him as a coach as I did as a player. Glad to have him on my team but wasn't an All American or can't miss. He was solid and a hustler. Not going to miss him but I wish him luck. Just like I did Louis Orr, Brendan Malone, Wayne Morgan, Troy Weaver and Rob Murphy. I could care less who is the next assistant. I've never worried about assistant coaches.
Buddy would get Boeheimed.I'm only happy if ultimately HCJB is here for another year. I just don't think a coach at 74/75 has enough in the tank to do what needs to be done and that's not a knock...Most people that age probably don't want to work full time at the level needed to do the job right. I would note just because there is an extension, does not mean he will be there for the life of the extension. That said I think if we see Buddy commit, than Jim will be here until his son graduates.
What's your point or did you mean to post this somewhere else? Everyone of the coaches I mentioned coached at SU at the Carrier Dome while the team played games on ESPN.It was a whole different world back then. It was before ESPN, for Chrissakes, and we played in a gym with a dirt floor that sat maybe 8,000 on wooden high school bleachers.

Nope. He wasn't squeezed out. He got a great deal that changed the game. He now has a A.D. that hired him. One that stands behind him 100%. He didn't have that here. He could have come in and been fired after three un Syracuse years. That won't happen now. Two, the Washington program is his without a giant shadow over him. had he decided to stay, he would have been the next coach. One with very shaky job security from day 1.
Agree completely on JB, but maybe a little harsh for a guy who gave everything he had to Syracuse basketball for almost 30 years.A little history lesson for some of you. Mike Hopkins is a footnote in SU basketball history. Jim Boeheim IS SU basketball history, and its present and for a little while longer its future. Mike Hopkins didn't "deserve" anything.
