The thing that really scares and frustrates me is the special team play. Marrone decided to take over this unit and it has been a terrible failure. Kick and punt returns are the worst in the nation. I watch at least 3 or 4 other games each week and no one struggles to return kicks like SU does. Punt coverage and field goal teams have been bad as well. Kickoffs are ok because of 2 or 3 guys, Norton, Morgan and Coker are doing a great job. It is a bad sign when your head coach takes over a unit and they regress. It is way to early to talk about firing anyone, still plenty of time to correct the mistakes. The last nine games have been a major step backwards though.

Because he has no answers... He thought these guys had turned the corner and he just got bitch slapped. He needs to sacrifice a goat or something to get rid of these fluky turn overs...

I don't know what the answers are because I thought we had turned a corner also... It is against his nature to be more aggressive but that is what needs to happen. I don't think Doug has it in him to go against his instincts.

The goat idea is a good one. I think we are desperate enough now.

My Kingdom for a Jim Tressel!!!

I'd take Tressel in a heartbeat! He was an assistant here back in the day...I guess, for him, it would be like three right turns. ;)

We have more talent than MN we were simply out coached in every aspect of thGe game. Play calling in the red zone is beyond horrible and specials and the Oline are our worst units and they are coached by our head coach. Something needs to change and i can tell you that gross is a fan of DM but that he is a bigger fan of his own job. If Doug tanks this year and i mean 3 wins i think that he is shown the door. I for one would consider elevating Shafer to head coach bringing in a true OC and Special teams coach and moving forward. If we loose the next 4 games i would not be shocked to see Doug step down especially if we see him loose the team

What say you?
I said not yet, and was not able to see the game yesterday. I will say that I am disappointed, though. I really thought this was one that we needed to win, as a gauge of where we are - knowing everything we have seen this far for both teams.

I still support Marrone, but I am concerned that in year four we don't have a third serviceable offensive tackle, and a single (!) middle linebacker. Cater and Coker really stung us in the latter regard.

It's not a good day to ask this question, with the agony of last night's game so fresh. The game was disturbing on many levels. I'd defer to those that feel you understand the underlying cause of the breakdowns that we've had but would like to be cautious in allocating blame. Nassib & Broyld turned the ball over 4 times, which perhaps was partially due to play-calling but there was plenty of blame to go around. The team is DM's to manage so he's ultimately responsible, but coaching is only one element of the game and there are still 8 games to go this season. I hope he finds a way to win as that's the ultimate metric in his success and the success of the program. There may be those that would take great joy in his demise, but I'm not one of them.

Now that's a true voice of reason.

I'm not as sure as some how this season will play out, but I'm willing to reserve judgment until we actually see how things go in conference. The situation is not certainly hopeless in terms of the talent we now can put on the field, but we need to start playing cleaner games, or at least as cleanly as our opponents. When a team regularly makes more mental errors and commits more turnovers than its opponents, it usually does not end well on the scoreboard.

I was thinking along the same lines. Possible.

Why? The O has been better than the D the last 17 games so why not make Hackett HC? The team right now has issues on all sides of the ball. We handed the D a lead against NW that they could not protect. USC was a ball game until the D let up a 70+ yard run. Minny was 7-3 at half and the D let them waltz down the field to go up 14-3. The D is playing soft coverages and not putting any pressure on the opposing QB. The D is not getting any sacks putting teams in long yardage. The D is not forcing any TOs. The D is bending allowing loooong drives.

Overrated. Good, but not great.

PPG: 88th, 73rd, 17th, 81st, 84th, 65th.

17th caused people to think he was god.

Keep in mind that the Michigan Head Coach couldn't trade Shafer fast enough for the worst coach all time in college football - you guessed it - Grob.

What I don't like about our defense, is we have the guys who should be devestating safeties playing linebacker. He would have played Darius and Jones who went on to be all-pro safeties at linebacker. Thats why teams pound us up the middle, if the linemen don't stop the running back, they run right over our linebackers.
