How important do you feel this BC game is for the program? There is the obvious winning will be huge for the 15 extra practices and the continued development of the young players into the system. But how much do you feel this is a must win for the program? I tend to fall into the group that feels this is a must win of all must wins. We can't afford to miss a bow again. We have to start showing that we can consistently make bowl games. Missing in 2011 totally killed the momentum from the prior year, and you could noticeably start to the see the interest level from the community drop. IMO we can't afford another repeat, especially after being perfectly set up needing only 1 win in 2 chances at home against old regional rivals. We need this win if only for our recruiting pitch. Being able you went to 3 bowls in 4 years means something. Nobody will say well you only had 6 wins. Let's hope we can get it done. We need to go bowling!

In the big picture, not so much. But it is huge in Hunt's trajectory. Win this game and he remains the starter for 15 more practices. Lose it, and the staff is back to experimentation in spring ball.

Not that big at all in the grand scheme. 5-7 versus 6-6 not that big of a deal as far as perception. Bowl game? This program needs more than 6-6 and a shtty bowl game to revamp. We have gone 8-5 2 of 3 seasons nobody seems to care, hasn't hurt or helped recruiting that much. This program nor its fans would remember what a big game feels like.

What? You are way off...going 4-4 in conference play for 1st season of Shaffer's tenure brings a level of respectability for SU in league play going forward. 6-6 overall and being bowl eligible is far far better than the alternative. Go back to watching SU basketball.

i hear ya, but we really need to say 3 of the last 4 years are bowl game seasons. regardless of how shitty the season and the bowl truely was.

we need to dress up the program some how, thats 1 easy way of doing it.

nobody remembers that when they wanted to run P out of town for missing a bowl game he was 7-4, they just know 'no bowl'.

a bowl game goes a long way for all the idiots out there trying to decide whether they should grace the Dome with their presence.

their '10 skeptism was validicated by no bowl in 11.

keep chopping...

Spot on. In football it's way different than basketball - in bball you pick up 1 or 2 great recruits you can get yourself back into the tournament. In football, it takes years to gain the respect needed to consistently get good to great recruits to come to your program. We have a long long way to go to earn that respect back and it starts with 6-6 or better seasons each and every year coupled with a bowl game. Very short sided not to see this for the long term perceptions of the program that the only way to break the vicious circle of disrespect is consistency in winning and bowling.

If Duke has a losing season next year any level of respect that they gained this year you can throw it the window. 10 years of Duke making it to a bowl game for the next decade they will get good to great players wanting to go there on a regular basis over an inconsistent program like SU is right now. Want to lose recruits because they want to go Duke?

Football is a building block process - going 5-7 takes away from what has been gained over the last three years. Going to a bowl continues to build upon that foundation.

spot on. imo this is the most important reason

absolutely. in the big picture a win tomorrow will go a long way. it will definitely shape our recruiting pitch for years to come. doesn't matter if we play North Texas in the Military bowl or Texas AM in the Chik-a-Flic bowl, a bowl game is a bowl game when you can say 3 bowls in 4 years

LOL. I don't watch basketball any more - soured on the sport years ago. But I do fly across the country to attend a home football game every year, family schedule willing.

McDonald is selling quick playing time to quality recruits. I doubt that whatever happens in this final game will deeply affect any of their decisions.

Disagree with this, and further, I believe it is this perception that continues to keep the fan base mired in apathy. Three bowls in four years is significant for a program that had sunk as low as we did during the GRob era. A .500 record in the ACC, and chance to get to 7 wins. 15 More practices. Remaining in the bowl season discussion. And the chance to carry this over to next season...when presumably we won't open on the road against two BCS opponents, represents a solid chance to gain traction in recruiting and momentum with the locals who currently ignore SU football. We need them to be enthusiastic. And if our own "Die Hard Fans" can't be enthusiastic, how the hell will they ever be?

How important? It is the game, win or lose, that will define this season and set the tone of the program over the next few seasons.

Better question: Can the program afford to lose this game?

My apologies then - but you did sound in your post like those fair weathered basketball fans we have on the other Board...far harder to cheer for our football team that has struggled over the past decade.

IMO being bowl eligible is what separates the upper echelon of FBS teams from the lower half.
In many regards the "shitty bowl" games are not unlike the pre-season tournaments in hoops. Maybe we weren't playing Kenucky or Kansas in Hawai'i, but it was an opportunity for an intriguing matchup against a quality NC foe, showcase the program in the national spotlight, and for the players hoist a trophy at a fun destination. Sure, it's not like making it to the Sweet 16 or a New Year's Day bowl, but I'll bet if you ask the team members about winning the Pinstripe Bowl or Maui Invitational, 'll bet they will say it was one of the highlights of their college career.

I think a win is a big deal even though I am not sure a win guarantees a bowl game. A win (OK this staff doesn't seem to recruit the NE that much) gives us bragging rights over BC in the North East. LGO!

we win we are 95% bowling

Otto gets it, everyone who is remotely, half-way, marginally decent goes to bowls. The worst programs don't go to bowls. So we really need to win, thus it's pretty big.

Unless we lose, then there will be a bunch of people here selling us on how 5-7 was miraculous given the all-world talent that departed last season. Those people are wrong, of course.

Over time and on average, sure. But we are not a "half-way marginally decent program" again... yet. It's going to take a couple more years of better recruiting. It seems pretty clear to me that we lucked out somewhat in what Marrone was able to do, but he didn't recruit a QB able to take over when Nassib left, or WR's for that matter. That's it, it's as simple as that. So while we made strides, we're now back to the point of having to recruit to prove that we are a 7-5 team and not a 6-6 team hoping that all the slots don't fill up.

We may win, but with only one game left we know who we are this season. And it's not great. While 5-7 would be disappointing, it's not the end of the world. I think we really needed to win the Pitt game, and we couldn't will ourselves to do that.

This game will be the differnce between entering another rebuilding cycle or buliding on last years success. I'm tired of building towards mid table and would prefer to get back to expecting a bowl and competing for the conference title every few seasons.

Plus, if we lose to BC I have to wear a Georgetown shirt to work next saturday. Had we not messed up the pitt game, it wouldn't be so critical though.
