How long of a leash will Hunt have this year?

It was obvious from the mid-year demotion of McDonald that Shafer knows he's got pressure on him to win and win now. Otherwise, why try to salvage the season by releasing your OC after a slew of injuries.

So, we are in year 3, Shafer has his new OC and offensive gameplan in place, and I think it's safe to say year 3 is generally the make or break season for college football coaches (discounting our new AD, of course). If Hunt starts off slow, and his TD/INT ratio continues it's historical trend, would Shafer pull Hunt, and how many games do you think he would give him?

As we saw last year, there's no real plan B. Hunt is the guy who will make or break Shafer's season.

Just throwing out what-ifs - if we're 3-7, does Shafer burn Dungey's redshirt to get him some game experience?

I think Dungey will get the nod if Hunt is truly struggling. In reality, however, I'm not expecting anybody besides Hunt at QB, barring injury of course.

Dungey has looked really good in practice.

I hope he will be fine as well, however, his numbers, particularly against P5 schools are pretty poor. If the trend continues and it's causing us to lose, I just wonder how long before Shafer makes a switch. Personally, I think as long as we are in bowl contention (6 wins) then Hunt will stay regardless of stats.

Unlimited leash, unless he craps out [which i do not expect] or gets injured.

Otherwise, it is his team, and he is the QB that gives us our best chance to get back to a bowl this season. Let it ride.

Multiple people are stating this as if it is a fact. We do not actually know.

How good would Dungey or Long have to be to outperform the Hunt of 2014?

Can you imagine, even in light of all the injuries, it was that apparent to Shafer how bad Macdonald was that he demoted his long time friend mid season? I mean that’s bad. HE WAS THAT BAD.

To your question, I think the leash is very long, but Dungey would have to be lights out in practice to make a move. Even if your .500 and clawing for a bowl game Shafer probably rolls it with Hunt. I’d have to imagine the wheels coming completely off before they starting benching guys.

I don't think he pulled the plug to salvage the season. I think McDonald was freezing in the box and creating division within the coaches. I think he hoped we'd do better - but also that he had to cut the cancer out, no matter what.

I think Hunt start them all, irregardless. We saw last year that Wilson/Long are not much better.

I think T-Hunt has it in him. Two seasons ago he won a bowl game. That was HCSS's first year as a head coach, SU was playing its first season in the ACC, and prior to the season T-Hunt had no real game experience (and no one gave SU a chance that season). Last season after his injury, T-Hunt sat in the booth with Lester, which I believe will help him in a few ways. This season, the guys on offense are no longer confused! Of course, time will tell, but right now I'm very excited to see this offense.

Based on actual playing time, that's the correct assumption. No one here has access or can comment on if Dungey looks better than Hunt everyday in practice. Long hasn't played in weeks. Wilson is not as good as Hunt.

So yeah - kind of, based on what we know - a fact.

Right, an assumption, not a fact.

Fact? The coaches couldn't answer that question truthfully if we go by your rules.

Of course coaches have to make decisions based on their opinions. My point is that the idea that Hunt gives the team the best chance to win is less of a certainty than people are willing to acknowledge.

I believe that the coaches play the QB that they believe gives the team the best chance to win, and all sorts of factors go into those decisions.
