How much will Wes Johnson make on his next contract?

Wes Johnson may make for an interesting case study on just how crazy this NBA off season and the rising salary cap can be. Since his rookie deal, he's signed two one year contracts for the veteran minimum, and a deal with a second year player option also at the minimum, which he just declined in order to become a free agent as the cap soars. As a spot starter/viable bench guy, you can argue that he's been underpaid over these last three years.

How much is he going to be worth in "today's NBA?"

Johnson is better off signing with a good team where he can be a part of a good bench. He isn't going to get any real money thrown at him.

I love Wes, but he always seems to get to teams, they envision him in a role. Usually a starter, kind of a 3 & D guy. And then he finds his way to the bench. When I watch games that he is in, he seems so passive. He is so talented, he needs to get aggressive.

As an NBA player, I don't think he's particularly talented. Everyone in the NBA is really talented. He essentially has no handle, I think the role he's played the last few years is what he's best suited for.

I think by now we're seeing the player that he is. Certainly the expectations many of us had for him were higher, but he's still carved out a pretty decent career for himself, and it's still not over.

Pretty sure the minimum teams need to spend on players this year is 85 million per team. Wes is going to get paid more than he did last year, which was 1.1 million.

Whatever Wes, or Dion or any of our other SU family in the bigs get paid, I hope to god they control expenses, live within a reasonable budget, save and invest wisely and don't end up like the vast majority of pro athletes in America, dead broke.

I'd guess he's still looking at roughly a veteran minimum contract. Maybe someone gets desperate and signs him with one of the exceptions for like $3 mil instead. I'd be shocked if he's really a beneficiary of the salary cap heaven a lot of guys are finding themselves in.

And teams don't REALLY need to hit that salary cap floor of $85 million. They don't really get penalized for not hitting it; they just give everyone on the team a raise for the year so that they arbitrarily hit the floor.

You're right he will get paid though. Teams like Philly are going to hand out lots of money to guys like he and Harrison Barnes.

He played great for the first two series and then was utter crap against Golden State. But by that point, people were already hyping him up to get $10-15 mil per year this offseason.

I highly doubt he would be one of the top 7 players on any team.

I get teams have to spend 84 million as their floors but Wes Johnson is unlikely to get more than a couple million at most.

I think I agree about Wes. He's coming off a rough season statistically and he's not getting any younger. Teams need guys that can put the ball in the basket. I love Wes but shooting 33% from 3 and 40% overall doesn't make you a must have roster guy.
