Wes Johnson may make for an interesting case study on just how crazy this NBA off season and the rising salary cap can be. Since his rookie deal, he's signed two one year contracts for the veteran minimum, and a deal with a second year player option also at the minimum, which he just declined in order to become a free agent as the cap soars. As a spot starter/viable bench guy, you can argue that he's been underpaid over these last three years.

How much is he going to be worth in "today's NBA?"

Waiters is the SU player who cash-in this offseason. Dion will likely get a 4 year contract at atleast 10 million per year.

Johnson is better off signing with a good team where he can be a part of a good bench. He isn't going to get any real money thrown at him.

He hasn't so far, but he also hasn't been a free agent at a time when there's been so much cap space.

I love Wes, but he always seems to get to teams, they envision him in a role. Usually a starter, kind of a 3 & D guy. And then he finds his way to the bench. When I watch games that he is in, he seems so passive. He is so talented, he needs to get aggressive.

As an NBA player, I don't think he's particularly talented. Everyone in the NBA is really talented. He essentially has no handle, I think the role he's played the last few years is what he's best suited for.

I think by now we're seeing the player that he is. Certainly the expectations many of us had for him were higher, but he's still carved out a pretty decent career for himself, and it's still not over.

I'm thinking Johnson will have a good chance to sign a contract that totals at least $10 million over the life of the contract. Something like 2 years for a total of $10 million total or 3 years for a total of $12 million.

So many teams have cap space and I don't think many of the top free agents will sign with other teams. This would leave more money for the lesser free agents.

Wes turns 29 in July so he might be past his physical peak.

If he signs another veteran minimum contract I think it would only be a result of his desire to play on a winning team.

Wes being 29 made me feel really old for some reason.

I could see a 2/10 or something like that. The money is insane right now

i wonder what he would make in China. he could make a huge difference for a team overseas.

Pretty sure the minimum teams need to spend on players this year is 85 million per team. Wes is going to get paid more than he did last year, which was 1.1 million.

Whatever Wes, or Dion or any of our other SU family in the bigs get paid, I hope to god they control expenses, live within a reasonable budget, save and invest wisely and don't end up like the vast majority of pro athletes in America, dead broke.

I'd guess he's still looking at roughly a veteran minimum contract. Maybe someone gets desperate and signs him with one of the exceptions for like $3 mil instead. I'd be shocked if he's really a beneficiary of the salary cap heaven a lot of guys are finding themselves in.

And teams don't REALLY need to hit that salary cap floor of $85 million. They don't really get penalized for not hitting it; they just give everyone on the team a raise for the year so that they arbitrarily hit the floor.

Dion will get a big contract due to his play in the playoffs though.

There is no penalty, but you have to spend that money. If you don't reach it through contracts, the difference between what you are playing out and the floor gets divided up by the rest of the players.

I'm not sure why people think Dion had a great playoffs. He had a handful of good games, but averaged 8 points on 41 percent shooting. It really wasn't good at all. That's why OKC traded for Oladipo. You're right he will get paid though. Teams like Philly are going to hand out lots of money to guys like he and Harrison Barnes.

It's really just people on this board who think he had a great playoffs. I'm not denying he's getting paid, but he wasn't great or anything.

He played great for the first two series and then was utter crap against Golden State. But by that point, people were already hyping him up to get $10-15 mil per year this offseason.

5-6 million on one year?
If Wes makes 5-6 million per year that should become the new veterans minimum.

I highly doubt he would be one of the top 7 players on any team.

I get teams have to spend 84 million as their floors but Wes Johnson is unlikely to get more than a couple million at most.

I admit I made that # up, but let's check back in a few days and see if I was right

2/8 or 3/12.

Interestingly the MLE has not raised at the same % as the cap. It starts around the same $ amount next year.

The MLE will have less attractive players in it as there is more cap space this year (so teams don't need to use MLE) and players can make more. So once teams hit the cap and all that is left is the MLE, players like Wesley Johnson might become more attractive than the vet min.

I predict around 2/9 or 3/12 from a team at the cap.

Yeah I was talking to a friend about this; how many teams are even eligible for it? The cavs i think

I think I agree about Wes. He's coming off a rough season statistically and he's not getting any younger. Teams need guys that can put the ball in the basket. I love Wes but shooting 33% from 3 and 40% overall doesn't make you a must have roster guy.
