How the HELL did Allen beat out Hunt?

I've been wondering that since Hunt's series against NW. Just can't get my head around it. Is Hunt that poor of a practice player? Is Allen that much more of a practice player? Is it really just that difficult to simulate game speed, pressure, and variables in practice? Has Hunt just been lucky? Is Allen simply a hard-luck kid? Is it really possible that a team would sabotage one player at the risk of their own success? Was a promise made?

The entire thing just seems so improbable.

Hunt looks like Donovan McNabb out their! Allen looked like Billy Scharr;);)

Here's what I heard from a pretty good source:

--Neither player had a track record entering the season
--Hunt didn't separate himself in the preseason
--In drills, Allen threw the ball better
--In Ft. Drum scrimmage, Hunt and Allen were basically even, but Allen made a few more plays
--Tough opponent + essentially hostile road game for the opener, tie went to the 5th year senior that they figured could handle the pressure

Let's be happy that the coaching staff wasn't stubborn, and that they pulled the trigger on making the switch and haven't looked back, tried to maintain some kind of unworkable two-headed QB system, etc.

I think it went like this:

Better arm? Allen
More experience? Allen
Better prep/film study? Allen

Better at playing the game of football? Hunt

Needed live game snaps.

Agreed. And you probably don't get a ton of "live" action in practices, at least not the type that simulate games.

Because once the lights came on, there is no comparison between the two.

Its the same thing that happene when paulus came here. No way he was sitting if he was transferring here.

I don't know how long it is going to take Terrell to be a very good QB, but you can't teach poise in the pocket, even on busted plays he has the ability to have a chance to get the first down. He may not have the Manning or Marino throwing style, but he gets the ball there, and its catchable. As the analyst said he doesn't just take off under pressure, but goes through progressions, and even when running looks for receivers.

In some fairness to Allen, there is a world of difference between, on the one hand, PSU and NW, and on the other hand, Wagner and Tulane. The announcers said, for example, that Tulane's linebackers (which include Bob Marley's grandson!) all weigh less than 200 lbs.

That having been said, I am very comfortable with Hunt as the QB. Our OL will not match up well against the better teams on our schedule, so a more mobile, creative QB is called for. Kudos to the coaching staff for having the courage to make this change so early in the season.

Very true... and we'll find out in 2 weeks.

I have not been in the Allen camp and only was contented by HCSS deciding to go with him. I know he was stiff in games 1 & 2 but in clean up duty, Allen looks really relaxed and the team plays well enough for him. He is probably much better than what we saw in Games 1 & 2 overall and probably would have been an excellent QB in the right program without the pressure of walking in and taking over.

Whatever the coaches finally got it right. I was thinking if I were a recruit I would want no parts of the team Allen was qbing. When Hunt is in their I would be ready to jump into that action. Hunt is light years better than Allen.

Allen had the first three series against Wagner. All 3 and outs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving Hunt's moxie, command of the O and feel for the pocket... BUT, he throws a weak a$$ ball sometimes, which could get eaten alive by some decent ACC defenses.
I'm on the bandwagon, but still optimistically skeptical...

From his poise under pressure to making accurate passes, Hunt is by far the better QB. I can't figure out what the coaches saw either. I know that the competition the last 2 games was easier but Hunt still had to make decisions while he was being pressured and he made calm and correct decisions, not panicked decisions.

Of all the people I know who either saw a scrimmage, were at Ft Drum, had insight to practice , even 1 who was at practices , not a single person ever said to me Hunt would be the QB. Every last one said Allen would be the starter.

It's easy to look like joe Montana when no one can hit you. Real game is a different animal.

Look at the NFL draft. How many times does a guy get drafted high based on measurable a then ends up losing his job to a guy that maybe doesn't run as fast or throw as hard but just is a better player. It happens. I'm sure the staff felt Allen was the best option based on what was happening in practice and his measurables. It may have been very close but the tie went to the guy who was the 5th year senior from a power program.

Brady was a back-up at UM. George Patton failed his first year at West Point.
There is far more to to leading your team at QB than performance in passing drills.

Hunt when he gets rolling past the DL to the 2nd level... wow, watch out.

Hunt threw to 11 different receivers today. He spread the ball around so well and was fun to watch. I hope he plays with such poise against the ACC.

Similar to what I heard.
