How the HELL did Allen beat out Hunt?

I think the announcers had a good summary of the bad hand Drew Allen was dealt. I'm all in with Hunt and am completely dumbfounded as to how Allen beat out Hunt who is already making some national headlines but Drew Allen started against 2 good teams with the coaching in a complete disarray, players running wrong routes and dropping balls. Terrell Hunt looks like the real deal, lets see how he handles Clemson and their defensive ends who will probably be in his grill all day.

Nw is good but psu not so sure

You gotta admit it does seem like a tremendous stretch that Allen clearly outmatched Hunt all pre-season but performs so badly compared to Hunt in the game...it requires leaps of the imagination to see this as being anywhere close to reality. Especially the game management and getting plays in type stuff that contributes to flow - Hunt came in against NW with the second stringers and the difference in command and flow was just so stark - could it really have been otherwise in scrimmage and simulated game situations in practice? It's possible, just hard to see.

It seems like a far more tremendous stretch to suggest that Hunt clearly outmatched Allen, and yet the coaches still decided to go with Allen. I can suspend disbelief, but not that far.

I'm just happy that the coaches weren't too stubborn to quickly make the switch when it became apparent that Hunt was better instead of waiting 3 of 4 more games when we'd be out of bowl contention, or that they didn't try some bastardized two-headed QB system rather than just replace Allen. It sucked starting out 0-2, but if the end result is that we now get Hunt for three full years, I'll take it.

Coaches made a mistake evaluating the two qb's and instead of being proud and selfish they realized it and made the right call. I understand that the guy leading the orange to wins is their goal and in their best interest as well but we've seen stubborn coaches before that won't make changes due to foolish pride or other reasons. This was a tough call in a way because of the kid coming here to be qb1 and now he's not.

Do you guys think Hunt is a potential star? I know it's only 2 games but I can't recall better QB play in my 40 years of watching SU football. This kid has serious skill and feel for the game.

I think he's a very good qb for the system the coaches have in place. He still is getting away with some average throws along with a ok arm and carries the ball a little loose on his runs. I love his vision so far and ability to see the field. I'd like to see how he is when he's pressured and if he makes foolish throws and hopes his guy gets it when it's thrown in a crowd of D, Kobena made a nice play coming back to the ball in the first quarter that I thought could have been picked off if he just waited for it. A star, I don't know but I do like what I see.

Maybe roethisberger? Not as good obviously. But big athletic without being fast and doesn't have the classic perfect arm but is tough and wins

This is wishful thinking of course I'm stretching

I see him more as a David Garrard-type for those good East Carolina teams in 2000/01.

Not really elite in any category, but he combination adds up to a great college QB.

its not important what they think, but rather, me

Is it possible that Allen just got cold/anxious by not playing meaningful game minutes for years?

I'm glad he chose SU. Best I've felt about the 2nd QB in a while. He may very well be called to bail us out later in the year and if so I think he'll put up a better showing.

I think we knew after UNC.

Whey you saw players and good athletes at that, just look like you and me on defense you knew that McNabb was special.

Hunt doesn't have his feet or arm strength but he looks like a leader and possibly (I hope) a more accurate arm.

They did a little more than passing drills.
Of course - that was an over-simplification. My point is that whatever criteria coaches use to name a starter based on practice performance sometimes doesn't translate to how each QB would perform under live fire in an actual game situation.

Hell even the Pros makes mistakes. Look at the rounds Brady and Wilson were drafted. You can't see or measure what is inside a person that makes him perform better than someone else when the lights come on. Hunt is more mobile and has a better understanding of the offense than Allen. I think he will do just fine in the games coming up, but it still a team game and the line has to block and the receivers need to get separation against better defenses.
