Smallest Dome football crowd I've ever been a part of (though the Robinson WVU opener was the only home game I attended during his tenure). It looked like a sectional game when I got into the building at 3:50. Student section was almost full, though, and pretty involved during the first half.
Is anyone surprised by the turnout? I mean there was no way the 0-2 start was going to convince a casual fan to come out and watch a FCS team play while Bama-A&M was on. Does anyone know if SU did anything other than the free kid's ticket to try and get people there?
I wish the athletics marketing office would stop focusing so much on being NYS's college team and focus on being the Syracuse community's team. Seriously, from just a community pride perspective - I have no idea why people don't embrace such an important part of the community. In a time when so many national/international industries are moving out of the Syracuse community, the university's national brand (and the perceived support of the local community) is actually important. Showing up for games is a simple thing that members of community can do to show support and help Syracuse's national brand.
They need to do something about the wands and search when entering the dome. I understand the need for searching with Boston Marathon and an unfortunate part of life today but they need to add more staff to make it more efficient. It took forever to get in with 33k. Imagine what it will be like for Clemson.
The true question is why go? Only blind fandome gets people there. Good for them, and those of you here that went. SU has very few total fans. At Syracuse, most people are sports consumers. You need a winning team, which plays exciting offense, OR a huge name opponent, to draw people to the Dome. That's it. Simply going to support SU for SU's sake is not enough.
