I took his comment as “[slur] who are Catholic”. Like, Catholic was just a descriptor the way you might call out the color of the shirts they’re wearing. It seems like others are assuming he takes issue with Catholics. Idk, it could go either way, but the Catholic part of it seemed inconsequential to me.
Just playing devil's advocate here, because this is little more than a distraction in the broader picture of a dysfunctional society, but the use of Catholic is very much an essential part of Huggins' poor attempt at humor. Just saying, "fogs" without the descriptor "Catholic", would not elicit a humorous reaction.
I know these things, because I like to inject inappropriate comments into conversations amongst drinking buddies because the shock value can leverage something nominally funny into a spit-out-your drink funny moment (it can also backfire). But, these are things I would use only amongst confidants and not pronounced in public or on the record.

Huggins acted like he was hanging out in his man cave at home with a couple old college buddies is what makes it so shocking.I would guess he was drunk off his arse or he is one stupid SOB.

And if they fire him, goodbye to Autry, we have our guy

Bottoms up, Bob

It is worse. He said it twice and knew he was live. But he won't lose his job. He said it while working in the "right" place.
I always liked Bob Huggins. I remember when he first became coach at WVU and we played them for the first time at the Dome, he gave a great interview praising JB and saying JB’s critics were idiots, of course with his trademark dry and salty humor. I always appreciated that.

I kind of assume he and many of these very old school coaches are likely homophobic and potentially bigoted, though I hope some of them have evolved. But I was disappointed to see him actually use those words. As a gay person, I can say it’s hurtful. And for young gay people, it’s harmful and destructive to hear that disparaging, demeaning language used against your very identity. Same with racist and antisemitic language. Thankfully the world is more accepting than when I grew up. At the very least, Huggins should have known better. The world is very different than it was 20 years ago, let alone 10. I will also add that it says a lot about him that he even agreed to go on that radio show with that reactionary jerk host.

I haven't heard the word used in over a decade so honestly for someone to do so on air... well IDK or care if you are punished. Huggins is at the end of his career and has earned a boatload of money hardly a sympathetic figure. He does work for one of the very few institutions that he could get away with this and it would be forgotten pretty quickly though its not really apples to apples him saying this as WVU coach vs somewhere else.

They would start the statue building if he were at Penn State.

Shouldnt litter faggetti, its ecologically unsound ===> I think this is what HuggyBear was trying to convey.

Why? There is far too much hate in this country. And in this world. It is long past time that people are called out for hating people because they are different from them. There is a mass shooting for every day of the year. You don't think offensive statement are where that starts?
Is it realistic to categorize this episode as "hate". It was stupid but the word "hate" is thrown around way too much IMO.

Just my opinion, but forcing bigots to apologize doesn’t lead to any meaningful change. They aren’t remorseful. They’ll put out a press statement so they don’t lose their job, and then they usually just try harder to keep those thoughts out of the public arena.

People feel what they feel. It’s rare that being called out leads to a genuine epiphany.
