Hunt > Nassib

I know I'm going to get vilified. It was only Wagner, blah blah. And we could very well tank the rest of the season and win 2 games. I get it.

But Hunt has more mobility than Nassib. From what I saw in one game has better pocket awareness. And gives his receivers a chance to catch the ball on both deep balls and on short and intermediate routes. He's going to make mistakes, but he throws a ball that is accurate and catchable.

Nassib no question has a better arm and an ability to fit balls into tight windows against better defenses. And probably had a better grasp of the offense last season. But redshirt sophomore year to redshirt sophomore year, I think Hunt is better than Nassib was. And has a much higher upside as a college QB.

The jury is still out, no question. And it was only one game. But from a natural ability standpoint, I am very excited to see where Hunt can take this team the next three years.

Easy there champ.

Soph. Nassib was QB on an 8-5 team that beat WVU and SFLa on the road and KSt in the Pinstripe. Let's get through Tulane, Wake and BC first.

Career yardage is not the measure of who is best. I am not saying Hunt is better (that would be silly at this point) but I like Hunt after his first game better than I liked Nassib after his. Lot's of short-term memories here apparently don't recall that Nassib struggled in many situations. He got better year to year but he was very raw and had lots of flaws his first year. It remains to be seen whether Hunt will be similar, worse, or better.

The talent / depth is better now than it was during Nassib's sophomore year. That's another factor to consider.

We shall see. That 8-5 team had a top 10 defense and had three wins built in (two I-AA and Akron). I'd still take Hunt over Nassib if I was building a college team. No question in my mind.

What's the over/under on Hunt's QB rating this year (assuming nothing weird happens and he gets most of the snaps)? I'm not going out on a limb here, i'm asking. I don't have much to go on

Nassib's soph rating was 124.

I hope Hunt gets to 130, which would be middle of the pack last year. 124 puts you around 80 last year

even in 3 years qb ratings are going up across the board. (nassib was 72nd in 2010)

Its still too early to determine if Hunt is better than Nassib as sophomore. Let him play vs some real opponents. I am hoping he is the next big thing but right now its too early to tell. Hunt will be going against some tougher competiton than what Nassib went through. If he can be affective this year, look out.

Actually the post topic was Hunt > Nassib. That's it. Even if you delve into the post you still state that Hunt has a "much higher upside" than Nassib as a college QB. Once again, Nassib threw for more yards than any QB in Syracuse history and had the single-season passing record in his senior year. Your comparing that to what exactly? One game against Wagner and a mop-up TD against Northwestern? Really?

C'mon man! I know your excited about Hunt but get real. He hasn't even had a start against a real opponent yet and you wanna retire his number. Slow down. These sort of expectations are unrealistic and foolish.

If you really wanna make it interesting i'll put up Nassib's career yardage against Hunt's right now for 2 season football tix the year following Hunt's departure from the program. Details on the tix (section, price) can be worked our privately. I'll even donate mine to a non-profit if I win.

Don't be ridiculous. I'm not saying Hunt will pass for more yards than Nassib. And I never implied I want his number to be retired. Those are your words. I am saying he has the potential to be a better college QB than Nassib was.

Nassib had a great senior year - no denying that. He was less than average as a sophomore, average at best as a junior.

ESPN has a total QB rating that rates college QBs based on four categories - value added on passing plays, running plays, sacks and penalties. He was the 36th-best QB nationally based on this metric in 2012. Top 5 of Manziel, Mariota, Geno (great outside of vs. Syracuse), Tajh Boyd and AJ McCarron. 65th as a junior, 106th (?!) as a sophomore. Hunt doesn't have to do a whole lot to be ranked better than 106th in the nation.

As you might expect, Nassib was tremendous passing the ball as a senior (+65.6, 17th in nation). Made a lot of good reads and was able to move the chains with short/intermediate plays. He also had terrible negative rushing expectation (-1.2, 86th in nation) and a bad sack expectation (64th in nation). Meaning he is a detriment running the ball and his sacks were very harmful to the offense. Was very good with penalties (12th in nation), which is expected based on his knowledge of the offense and having fewer offensive penalties than most other teams we faced.

Hunt can add + values to the run category and I believe the sack expectation will also improve. While his passing arguably may never be as good as Nassib's was (I think it can be), what he brings to the table just strictly with his ability to get positive yards running the ball will make him more effective.

It's all about the team improving at every single position. And I believe Hunt brings the capabilities to improve at the position. Even now.

he was 35th in passing by the regular old qb rating

So they're pretty much the same.
i think being able to run indirectly helps your passing numbers. worse throwers end up with better passing numbers

A little premature [IMO] to make this declaration, but I agree with your final point 100%. Hunt appears to have rejuvenated what was shaping up as a lethargic, inept offense. Very excited to see what he can do the rest of the way.

A little?

This is like Jim from American Pie premature.

On another note I think that if Jerome Smith stays another year (not lookin like it but just speculating) he'd have an opportunity to be our best running back of the 2000s if he's given the opportunity by the coaches...

Reyes, Rhodes, Brinkley, Bailey, Brown, Mungro, Carter etc.

yep, throw out the straw man because of the ridiculous OP.

Only 4 more wins to go...

OP is not as ridiculous as you may seem to think. And we'll see how the Pats end up this year. As I said, closer to 6-10 than your 12-4 prediction.

Even Jerome Smith would say pump the brakes with that one.

well, they currently have 2 wins, 0 losses, and no offensive players so I feel like 12-4 is a pretty good prediction. Especially with 6 automatic wins in the AFC east...

Anything. Anything can happen and no one will be surprised.

Come on Ben, you can't even deny that this year is not going to be a typical NE year. They could end up with 10+ wins, in fact I wouldn't bet against it, but what I've seen of them (I've watched both games), they are not making any noise this post season.

Ha. We'll see. Another typical Boston/NE type. I will give you credit for fitting the stereotype well.

Miami will dethrone them this season. NE is too offensively limited--just not the same team.

Hunt leads Syracuse to AFC eastern division and AFC titles and will now face the NY Giants and their qb Nassib in the 2015 Super Bowl.

But the Pats actually have a good defense now. This team isn't dissimilar to the 2001 team, they'll be stronger offensively than that team when Gronk and Amendola get back.

The offenses of the Bills and Jets aren't exactly two of the more powerful in the league (being kind). How do you know that their defense is any good?

They played against two rookie QBs. One playing in his first game in the NFL ever, one in his second. And nearly lost to both. Color me unimpressed.
