Hunt's advice to A.J. Long: 'Put your ego under wraps'

I wondered over the past year if any of Long's comments would get a rise out of his future teammates, and they did. Conversely, this is exactly what you want and what HCSS is all about, fostering competition.

Everybody is after their teammates job, that's the atmosphere you want. And, every recruited kid is being brought in to be better than the player recruited before him. Just COMPETE baby!

Suck it up Hunt, your jobs never safe. Why the hell does the drama need to be public?

Competition is healthy.

agreed. I get how the hot headed rookie getting facetime in the media is tough, but I'm all for open competition. Hunt has work to do to solidify that position for the next two years. I definitely want him feeling like he has to continue to outwork everyone.

Competition and Older talent vs. New talent is the next step in us becoming a better program. Our recruiting is getting better. This will result in camp/training competition. Competition breeds success and, with the right coaching, team chemistry.

The two returning players I hope benefit most from this are Hunt and Broyld.

I hope the younger wide outs put some pressure on Ashton and unleashes le beast.

While Long should probably have not been so public with his comments, Hunt should not have as well. It can all be done in private. No need to tell the world how he schooled the little freshman.

Let's be clear - Long took it to the media first, and then shared the rest of the story now. Hunt did it right. Love the leadership.

Long could learn a lot from Hunt.

Any word of Edouard?

Could and should learn all he can from him... Hunt's the elder statesmen now.

Yep. I think Hunt has set the table for just that. I also hope they (and the other QB's) really push each other.

Hunt for two more years, Eduoard after that.

Not too difficult to see a scenario where Long is asked to change positions.

That's what you took away from reading that article?

Exactly. I took it the exact opposite way - Long is a freshman who doesn't know when to stop running his mouth. Even at the end his comments aren't exactly "knowing his role". I appreciate his wanting to be the guy but no need at all to say it publicly in your first semester on campus.

And there's confidence, even ego, which most qb's need. But then there's disrespect, and Long disrespected Hunt almost as soon as he stepped on campus. Hunt put the brakes on all that, and rightfully so.

Going to be a rude awakening for AJ when he's 4th on the depth chart this fall.

Just don't think it needs to be public.

It's healthy to have some tension and competition, but keep it on the field and in the gym.

I understand overall its a positive message, but it's just sort of unneeded.

To me the balance is this: you want competition internally and you want it to be as fierce as possible, you want guys pushing each other to their limit...but that competition cannot come at the expense of camaraderie and selflessness in the interest of what is best for the team. Each guy has to be able to own up to who the best person is to be on the field at a given moment or situation.

This is where things get sticky when guys start talking to the media. To me it's pretty clear that Long is young and dumb and not prioritizing the most important perceptions (his teammates) when he speaks with Nate (credit Nate's ability to connect with young athletes, but he's done Syracuse Football a disservice here).

Contrast the impact of Long's comments (I'd also include Alin Edouard's "I'll be the face of that program soon" here as well) among the team with those that Ritchy Desir made recently about personally choosing Brisly Estime over himself to return punts. At practice Desir can be the biggest dick and openly try to fluster or impede whoever he wants and his motives will be implicitly understood. Long can do the same thing and he'll just be a dick.

Quarterback controversy!

And unlike all the others, this one is going to be great because they hate each other!

Stay on this one Carlson (Cohen would), I'm going to grab some popcorn.

I think if you come in and don't have aspirations of supplanting the starter than there is no reason for you to come to the program. It should be everyone's aspiration to try and beat out the guy ahead of you.
