Hunt's advice to A.J. Long: 'Put your ego under wraps'

I can't imagine him saying that he was aiming for the starting QB position rankled some of the guys. I believe it was other derogatory comments about the talent of last year's team.

These guys ALL need help dealing with the media. As annoying as it is for us fans, they need to be taught the art of the sound bight - this public war of words is stupid and interferes with the team progressing. AJ was cocky in his earlier interview, but Hunt shouldn't have commented on his not answering text messages and all that - it's more immature for Hunt to do it because he should know better by now. Neither one of them did anything right in this.

Exactly! Hunt started off right when he said he addressed it because Long's comments rubbed teammates the wrong way. He shouldn't have brought up the text thing.

I don't think anyone has a goshdarn clue who is going to emerge. Maybe it will be one of the guys already on the roster. That said I am inclined to agree with you even though I have no basis for it.

Don't get hacked off that some young kid is gunning for your job, get better. My fear is that Hunt thinks the job is his because he has the locker room support and respect of his team mates. That's not enough to keep the job. He stunk last year. The BC and MN games he was average at best. Average QB play over the course of the season would've won a couple more games. Average QB play is the minimum expectation.

I have absolutely no problem with how Hunt handled it. Anyone who played college athletics would have known that the comments AJ was making before even making it through 1 practice were going to rub people the wrong way. Remember Trudo's comments about WW? Doesn't matter what level Freshman will always be "rookies". You have to earn respect with your play, not your mouth.

I think this shows very strong leadership from Hunt. He could have let Long continue to run his mouth and piss off the locker room, which would help him in the QB competition. Instead, he tries to help Long gain the respect of the team, this is the kind of character you need in upperclassmen (starters or not)

Really don't see the beef people have with Hunt's comments except for initially responding with a text rather than confronting AJ directly. Its really easy to tweet something (in AJs case) and infinitely harder to say it to someone's face. Which I realize is an extremely ironic post given how I am giving this fresh take on a fan message board. Hunt's showing leadership by making sure this kid is not ostracized by this teammates. Could have been done more quietly but stuff like this gets blown up when the basketball team is done and practices are closed to the media.
