At some point, when the music stops and every opening in the major conferences is taken (ACC, SEC, Pac Whatever, Big 10 & probably the Big 12), all remaining teams that have a football program will try to join a national conference that has one guaranteed spot in the BCS bowls. Only the strongest will be able to convince on others they are worthy members. After that, the remaining teams that fail to get a spot in these leagues (Tulane, Middle Tennessee, etc.) will then probably drop to what was once called 1-AA. Then you will have 5 or 6 "power" conferences (and perhaps ND as an independent) fighting over the 10 or 12 BCS spots.
I don't love it but that is what I see in the future.
