I dont think Shafer has done a very good job at

I guess I am not as forgiving for the injuries since almost every team we played this season has been injured/missing their best player. Off the top of my head...

CMU - missing their top RB Rawles
Maryland - missing their top 4 LB's
ND - 5 starters suspended before season
Louisville - missing starting quarterback and best WR in CFB Devante Parker
FSU - missing top RB Mario Pender
Wake - I believe their top 2 qb's were injured
Clemson - missions top RB Adam Choice and stud qb Deshaun Watson

Obviously there were more injuries for each team, I just highlighted the important ones. I've said it before and will say it again, injuries are part of football. It's the coaches responsibility to implement a strong S&C program, develop depth, and put the available players in a position to succeed. Every time we the bed we can't blame losses. We still blame 2011 on injuries and last year we were banged up as well.
Comparing Syracuse's depth to programs like ND, FSU, and Clemson isn't really fair.

So what? The point is every team deals with injuries. Sure we have dealt with a few more, but it's part of football. We had no problem giving Shafer credit for wins over Maryland, Wake, and BC last year.

And guess what. Unless we have accepted the fact of being the ACC doormat for the rest of our existence, we better find a way to deal with FSU, Clemson, and Notre Dame because they are on the schedule for the forseeable future.

That's a question that probably should have been asked two years ago.

I'm an IU alum who watched the Hoosier AD hire to assistant coaches following two abrupt HC departures for the FB and BB teams.

Both hires did not work.

And neither hire would have been made had a full national search been made.

It's a dilemma - hire the assistant and maintain some continuity or conduct a full search.

My feeling now is that the full search should be conducted regardless of the short-term implications.
probably true that we should have conducted a full search in hindsight, but in fairness, the very strong tendency is to hire within when the previous coach was a success. More risk is associate with bringing in an outsider if that outsider fails. i think the administration's best strategy is to give schafer more $ for the assistants next year and, if it fails, it can at least send a message to the next guy that we are willing to invest.

I became worried on the basis of the following: (1) Villanova; (2) the ISIS comment; (3) the handling of Coach McDonald; (4) the loss of composure on the sideline during a home game; (5) the bizarre ending to the half against MD(?). I love the guy, but I think I presumed incorrectly that he was prepared immediately to be a HC. I think he can be the guy, but he needs some time.

Very fair points. I'm certainly not arguing that he hasn't made mistakes. The offense is a nightmare.

I disagree on Villanova. Lots of good coaches have close calls with inferior opponents. Plus, they've pretty much handled all non p5 schools in his tenure. Plus we won.

The ISIS thing was weird, but people keep bringing it up like it was uttering a racist tirade or something socially awful. It was an odd attempt at putting things in perspective - it just didn't work.

Hunt was even with all his faults - our most important player on O. Now throw in his leading WR from the year before and the only guy with maybe NFL speed - and half the line.

We don't have the depth of Clemson, FSU, ND to deal with that many injuries.

Everyone keeps saying to pay more for assistants, but I honestly don't feel like letting Shafer just give his buddies more money. If that money were given to actually bring in proven assistants, I would agree 100%. But if it were used to only give Lester a raise for a job he probably shouldn't have in the first place? No thanks.

I think everyone is giving Ashton far too much credit. I don't even think he's had any touchdowns in the past 2 seasons?

And our line wasn't decimated until the NCST game. Before that they were pretty damn good, and we still couldn't do anything.

Your point was that those teams were missing their best or most important player. I was saying we're missing our most important player (Hunt) and two guys who might not of lived up to their potential but are good players (Broyld/Estime) and they've been shuffling players on the Oline all season (but the worst was the last two games).

Everyone has some injuries. We've had a lot. And you're right we've been horrible on O all year - but any chance of success with Lester has been neutered by injuries and no bye week. All 4 QB's have played and we were close to seeing our best WR at QB vs Duke. That's insane.

Broyld has to be the most overrated player in the history of Syracuse football. Turrible

If only he liked contact. OLB or safety could have been a nice home for him. Maybe even a Sunday payday if he embraced it early on.

i can think of one position where avoiding contact is a good thing generally
