I feel both good and weird about this class

As fun as the Kaiser/Dasher back and forth is...

The best part about this thread is multiple posters changing MTSU to ETSU.

Recruiting. Is. Not. Good. Enough... Yet.

But it's getting there. Syracuse isnt going to pull 7 or 8 All-ACC caliber talents in each class like Clemson, FSU, and Miami. But it needs to pull 3 or 4. Then stack the classes, and spread talent across all position groups. This class hopefully starts that trend.

Folks act like we exist in a vacuum. It doesnt matter if we get a little bit better, if our competition gets a lot better, or if those already better, stay consistent.

4-8. 4-8. isn't chicken salad. I like the direction but let's not get carried away. The last three games were very, very bad.

There's two ways you can look at it.

Either the first 9 games we were playing a little above our skis, and reality set in for the final 3.

Or the first 9 games are more indicative of what this staff can do in relatively short order (less than 2 full seasons), while the last 3 games we just ran out of steam and depth.

I'm going with the latter, because why not. We didn't have our starting QB (which didn't seem to matter the 1st half against Wake I know). And defensive guys kept dropping like flies. Those playing were clearly banged up. A guy like Parris Bennett played what seemed like every single snap of the season.

We need to figure out how to stay a little more healthy for sure. Greater depth would help, so guys don't have to play all the snaps. More time in the weight program that's designed for our systems will help. More players who are of a FBS Division 1 size coming in would help.

Now that we're a few months past it, and can look at the season overall, it's really hard to get worked up over how it ended.

Changing UCF to CFU used to be my favorite. It would drive the few fans that came to our board completely crazy.

Building upon that, Paris Bennett was the best player on the field in the LSU game -- for both teams. He was totally invisible at the end of the season, he and Zaire were completely worn down, and it showed.

I was pretty upset, but then not everybody drove 20 hours round trip and sat in a monsoon to see what a appeared to be a team mailing it in at Louisville ( probably not really the case) Then getting pounded by BC (yea BC) at home added to my bad demeaner. But a few months to reflect has calmed me down and I like the class. Beating out Arkansas and Texas for players and getting a star RB transfer will help a tad.

Yeah, he was banged up. His DEs that were supposed to hold up blocks were down to Guthrie and Berry. And against BC you had that kid running at him. It was like handcuffing him to a telephone pole and running him over with a bus.

lol Don't ever go in to the Hedge fund business. We don't have proof of concept. Coach Babers has never built a team of his players in to a powerful team. Doesn't mean he won't. I say this as I am rooting for him as much as you are. I like him and think he is the right guy for the job. But, he hasn't done better than 4-8 here yet. And let's face it, the best recruiting class in a long time with this program isn't a high bar. Hopefully it will translate to more wins. And soon. All I am saying is that nothing has been proven yet. The Clemson game was great. The Va Tech game last year was great. Good for them. Good for us. But I'm not ready to break out the champagne just yet. A winning season or two might be in order before we do that or think it is out of line to withhold judgment just yet.

If you're asking "can he build a team?" You're asking about evaluation of talent, recruiting, and coaching. All of which has gotten much better on his watch. You can use more than W/L to judge a coach - indeed if you care to look - you *must* use more than W/L. Records are a trailing indicator.

Let's put it this way: knowing what we know and seeing what we've seen so far - it's more far, far more likely that he's a "builder of teams" than not.

Not sure why folks think @PITT and @BC are some kind of big ask. We're getting better, Pitt and BC are too. But I don't give them a big edge in talent and I think we have a slight edge in coaching. Senior Dungey (or phenom) 3rd year in system? Who knows?

A few months back there was this turning the corner thread and i really did not see it. I see it in this ranked class ( it could mean nothing )

If the OL can run block and we can score TD instead of FG .We will win 7 -8 games. I saw last year a Def fighting and looked good ,really good at times(bad in the end),it was just fighting a losing battle.

Losing sucks and you get used to it ( see Buffalo and Cleveland) and it just becomes all about those #'s not about getting better (see Philly). yes i know those are pro teams

Sucks to lose Jordan, but getting the similarly rated Howard plus bringing in Adams as a transfer makes it not as big of a deal.

Sampson is the one I’m more bummed about, but getting White makes me think we can get more OL of that level in the coming years.

Really excited about Williams and Hendrix. Can’t wait to see this offense really pop when it has big time talent on every unit.

Really hoped for the 4* rb that chose Pitt over us. THAT would have been a feel good ending to the class. Arent qe short on allowed schollies? The number? Do we go JUCO for raw numbers to go into 2018?

I liked him but after the pulling su hat stunt I hope we make him FUBAR. I really like our class and I feel we are on the upswing. My thoughts always go to our lines as indicative of how we will do. If we can run the ball this year, we will be dangerous. If we stop the run, which I am a bit scared because all our lb are new, we will be in better shape. Slayton should become the monster that we need this year and be a first rounder. I feel he also wore down a bit last year in the end. Go SU
