I predict that MCW

Is there a more unfairly knocked player around here than Flynn?

Sure. Scoop and Triche come to mind.

Flynn is perfectly fairly knocked, when he is. In this instance, wasn't knocked at all - he was a combo guard who wasn't an eager distributor or stellar passer.

If anything, Flynn's Teflon around these parts. No small curiosity that the player is widely praised even though he criticized Boeheim's defensive scheme to the press, spent two years putting forth a meager defensive effort, and was involved in two ugly off-court incidents for which his teammates caught a ton of flak. Such behavior got other guys labeled lazy, headcases, or punks; people loved Flynn.

Well, that is certainly your opinion... I think the negative memories of general posters around here have much more to do with the fact that fate led him to play during a time that was a complete transitional process. While Gmac got to play with Melo and Hak, and Sherm got to play with DC and Seikaly, Flynn was flanked by such fellow lightning rods as Donte, Harris, and Devendorf.

MCW has been quoted as saying he enjoys making a good pass for a basket more than scoring himself.

That's interesting... it shows... nice to have someone like that on any team

He did have bad luck in terms of his surrounding cast, both on and off the court. He's not alone in that, though, and many have handled similar situations better than he did. And it's a little odd that he's nearly immune from criticism while some of his teammates were crucified for behaving the same as he did.

One thing about Jonny - no one can argue that he didn't have charisma... I think that may be what separates him from the others. And he was quite well-spoken which makes a difference in the way you are perceived.

I think that's exactly right, and isn't terribly surprising (since I'm as guilty as anyone of having a positive bias toward the players who are more engaging and seem more intelligent). He liked to smile and chat, and he came from a two-parent household, so many people liked him and could identify better with him than with other players.

And he was the face of one of our most memorable games.

I think, based on the small sample size and IMO, MCW is the most pure POINT guard on our team. When I think point guard, I think of a player who makes it his job to facilitate the half court offense and set his players up to score in spots where they can make shots. He did that last night, and did it comfortably.

Scoop is the starting point guard on the #1 ranked team in the country and he was the 6th man on 09-10 that was also ranked #1 in the nation. So either he is consistently over criticize or he playing with a team of future NBA'ers...and we don't have that many future NBA'ers!

I think Scoop is overly criticized. Not exactly sure why but it may be because especially early in his career he always was quick to grandstand whenever he did something good. I think that tends to lead to the converse reaction in people when they don't do something good. Just my hypothesis. He has toned it down as he has matured and I think that has also improved his play and his focus.

I think people pile on Scoop because it's long been clear that he isn't going to have an NBA career; Syracuse fans are willing to forgive a lot of flawed behavior from players who are going to make money and get the brand out there (Carmelo, Dion, Flynn) but are happy to turn their backs on someone whose relevance to them ends after college (Scoop, Harris).

It's funny (or irritating, perhaps) - Scoop and Dion had identical first-half plays in which they got beaten down court on a George Washington inbounds pass while we pressed. The first time, Dion cheated up and let his man get fifteen feet behind him downcourt. The inbounder threw a long pass and Dion's guy scored easily. The nitwit sitting behind me said to his friend, "It's ok, he almost got the steal, he's good at that." A couple minutes later, the same thing happened to Scoop. The guy behind me went berserk. "Scoop-id! Stupidest basketball player I've ever seen! [Expletive, expletive]! Look at him, he's ignoring Boeheim. He never takes advice, he always blames it on someone else." And blah blah blah like this through the next timeout. (Even though Scoop is as receptive as any Syracuse player to coaching advice, and Dion's rare lectures this year have been accompanied by a blank stare away from Boeheim.)

People see what they want to see and make up the rest to fit their biases. Truth is, they're all valuable members of the team.

The reason I think he gets criticized is because usually when he does something completely stupid, its because he is trying to attempt a play that someone with his physical abilities should not expect to consistently succeed at. I don't mean to make it sound like it is all his fault. He does make enough "wow" plays that he clearly has confidence in himself, and he has spent the last two years guiding a team that has lacked a go-to personality, but that doesn't make me trust his decision making any more than I do. To me he will always be a tremendous spark player that becomes a liability over starter's minutes. I do appreciate his efforts, those games where he has saved our bacon, his improvements off the court, and the fact he loves Orange... I just don't want to see him in the lineup for more than 20 minutes a game.

will keep saying it until it happens.
