Problem is, most of these guys haven't been "there" before (and certainly none of them when it has really mattered)... if fans of 20-40 years want to preach such things as karma, class, and not getting ahead of ourselves, to their fellow fan, that's one thing... but the kids should get to take time out and enjoy themselves.

Seriously. Was away this weekend. Thought people would be ecstatic over the ranking and recognition it brings and seeing people complaining about tshirts (I wont order this one, but I do generally have a lot of our novelty/commemorative shirts and think they're generally a pretty cool thin) and how they "better back it up" (or what? they lose and they're longer number 1). Other than losing, and the ensuing meltdown on this board, I don't see why it matters in the long run if they aren't able to "back up" the ranking, since in that case it seems an undefeated season is the only acceptable outcome.

A number 1 ranking is pretty meaningless in December, but it is certainly fun, and not something we've been graced with much in our history.

I'm all for the kids enjoying the moment, they deserve too especially after the beginning of the season and all the other stuff they have had to deal with. Hopefully they don't get carried away and let if affect finals week though!

I just wish we didn't have silly shirts for it, after all its been two years since the last time, not never before.

Actually we have a very talented team that cares about each other and the most important facet of the game defense. Not every game are you going to be great offensively but you can always play defense. You can keep yourselves in a game with defense, most times at the end of games good defense wins out. Great defense also prevents long losing streaks like last year. Lets just enjoy the moment and the fact we have so many likable players on this team . Watch the players on the bench most all are into the game and cheerleading their teammates. This is a fun team to watch because they are active on defense and you just know they will make a 2 or 3 minute run. Besides we have a 6-9 player who is 6 for 8 on free throws and a 6-10 who is 9 for 12 so this is a special time.

Nah. I think it's a positive thing. It's amazing how we want so bad for the team to be ranked #1 and then when they get there we never enjoy it. We always worry. It's all about perspective. Let's see how long we can keep it for now and then make sure we're there when the dance ends in April.

Pretty sure the whole UK team took pictures with the #1 shirt once they hit it in the polls in one of the last few seasons. I disinctly remember seeing the picture with UK players. So all teams do it, and it doesn't mean that teams with "traditions" can't wear #1 shirts.

Why do so many posters feel it's necessary to remind the rest of us that rankings don't matter right now, only in April? Well, duh! That doesn't mean the ranking is totally irrelevant. It may help with recruiting, fan participation and the greatest assist it can provide - sticking it in the face of Georgetown and University of Maryland co-workers.
