But JB seemed to think otherwise... What do u folks think?

Yes he did, but the kid was still able to get the shot off. As poorly as he shot, he still was able to get good shots which is a good sign. Gonna always be games when your shot isn't falling.

From the inner workings of the Melo center, I know that the coaches are very clear in scouting teams who the shooters are. The players are well informed who they must extend on. I also think that JB knows that these shooters will hit a one or two shots because they are shooters and that is going to happen. I think what pisses him off is when a player is getting multiple looks when they have clearly scouted that person. That is why Dion got reamed is because he should have known where he was before he got the pass.

He contested it, but never even should have let him get it off. He should have been closer. This would have allowed the player to drive past Dion, but with limited time on the shot clock he would have had to pull up for a 2 pointer or drive inside. If he drove to the hoop, the hoop would have been well defended.

I think this was all JB was explaining to him and he wasn't "reaming him out" at all, he was just coaching. I think that Dion wasn't very receptive as he thought he defended it well. And in all fairness to Dion he did defend it well. He just could have defended it better.

Now that's real easy for me and JB to say in hindsight, but the fact is Dion defended the shot better than probably 90% of players in his position would have.

All that said, I don't blame Dion for his defense and I don't blame JB for trying to perfect Dion's defense in that situation. I do think Dion has a problem with accepting criticism (most kids do) when they feel they did nothing wrong. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and listen and say, "OK".

The problem is w great shooters you can't give them a chance to get going. You got to make them put the ball ob the floor. The have had hands on their face their whole lives. Not a big deal.

With less than 4 seconds on the shot clock he should have not given him any space to even get the shot off. Plus he had already made some bombs so I understand why JB got in his grill.

+1. He shouldn't have had any room at all to shoot under those circumstances, i.e. Dion needed him to have to force a shot in those circumstances and didn't. It would have been pretty good defense on a longer shot clock as he did at least have a hand in his face. The dude did make a great shot in any case.

Kind of hard to hear or know what JB said or thought from where I was sitting,

I distinctly remember watching the play from my seat and thinking "get in his grill" because you could tell he was just waiting till the last second before having to hoist up the long 3. Dion was on him but just left too much space. Yes he did close fast and did get a hand in his face which looks like it was contested but he should have never been able to get that clean a look.

As soon as it went down I immediately looked at JB who just lost his mind.

And yes the kid made a helluva shot too.

Dion was allowing too much space. He was playing the Florida guards like they were the same as the guards he'd been defending from other teams. These guys were exceptional 3-point shooters with range. Dion had to adjust to the that range and he didn't. That's why JB yanked him.

He closed on him pretty well, and really had a hand in the guy's face, when I saw it on TV afterwards. The only issue was that the guy had a moment to measure the shot and make the catch before Dion closed on him. To me, the guy made a tough shot. He had a second to get ready to make the shot, but Dion did a very good job closing on him. You have to give some credit to the shooter.

And I think we should all recognize that unlike some past Florida teams we've played who were also ranked, this time they definitely deserve it. They are a good team with one of the best backcourts in college basketball. That was a hell of a group of guards we were playing against in the zone. In past years, at least 1 or 2 of those guys would have totally gone off on us. Florida has a GREAT backcourt now. One of those guys who I was not so crazy about when he was younger, Kenny Boynton, has really grown into who he was predicted to be. We did a great job out there.

You know, Mark, if you ever think about committing a crime or cheating on your wife, you might want to turn off that location tracker. That's some creepy , right there.

I think the fact that the shot clock was about to expire makes all the difference. The offensive player has very few options when the clock gets down to 5 seconds, and the defender needs to understand this and get right on the shooter's hands. Dion didn't.

On the plus side--this was the (final) turning point of the game, as Scoop entered and put the team on his back for about 5 minutes.

Yeah that is pretty messed up isn't it. I think I will try to turn it off. Not for the reasons you mentioned lol. It is just plain irritating..

He was late getting out. It happens but as a defender you need to be aware of the shot clock. Biggest mistake was letting the guy catch the ball while walking in to the shot and not making him put the ball on the floor . Measure Brandon Triche's percentage on 3's when he walks in to a shot. Much higher. He got up on the shooter but way to late. Just my opinion. Kind of reminded me of the dagger 3 vs. Butler in the NCAA's on the out of bounds play. Scoop was way late getting out.

This is all bs...you can only do so much on defense. if a guy is going to hit a 24 foot contested three..then good for him...it aint gonna happen very often..coach got in his grill because the guy made it...had he missed it..coach would have been slapping him five...its a result based reaction, not a process based one

Steve, excellent point
His close out was more of an after thought and not really contested. I thought that immediately and after watching the replay of the game a few times. Great game by the way and we won. He should have been pressuring him before the ball even got there at that time in the shot clock. Their guards had already shown the ability to hit long 3's.

Exactly. Someone else said this the other day, but it wasn't the best defense for the situation - had there been 20 seconds on the shot clock, it was fine. With under 5, and launching that shot the only offensive option, good defense would've been getting right on him, Bruce Bowen -style, and not letting the guy get off a clean shot.

...bottom line is that as clock runs down...'Cuse players need to go after 3 pt shooters...how many teams have made haymakers just before the buzzer goes off against us...we play excellent defense only to see a 3 pt score...it is because we either backed off cause the clock was running out or just got tired and stopped...as the clock runs out is time to play the tightest defense.

Bet JB would not have been pissed if the dude got around Waiters for a 2 or Waiters fouled him...a clear look with a couple of seconds left in unacceptable...but our players allow that a lot

So watching it again (maybe the 4rth time now) The defense was not entirely bad. Dion was too worried about the drive and was on his heals when the shot went up, so he couldn't do more than put his hand up a little late. I hope JB told him to get in his jock and make him drive in that situation. I then saw Triche and Scoop give up easier looks from three that dropped through. It took 3 made threes in a row before they made them drive every time. They made a couple of those but also turned the ball over for us to break on and get easy points. Love being able to nit-pic after a win. Reminds me we are still in the learning and developing part of the year.
