Dungey's left hand was broken at one point during the second half. It was swollen and looked stiff and unusual. And then I thought Dungey would probably play with a broken left hand. He's always been a warrior like that. The first time I saw him on tape was at camp his Freshman year. They were at Fort Drum, and he was squared off against Austin Wilson I believe. It wasn't a football competition per se, they were wearing helmets and gear, but they were wielding long sticks padded at the ends and when the whistle blew they began whacking each other. By the end of the timed battle Dungey had morphed into a wounded wild animal in the forest and was about to remove Wilson's head. And then in the first game of the season when T-Hunt went down Dungey showed immediately that he was a gamer. He ran the offense well, and at one point he left his feet making himself vulnerable to injury in order to score a TD. He had been on campus for 5 weeks, and I knew he was going to be special. I do hope he stops leaving his feet, and I've been hoping that now every game he's played. He's a great college QB. Thank you Tim Lester.
Ishmael also battled through an injury yesterday. I initially thought he might be out for the remainder of the game. I hope they both get well with the bye.
The SU defense continues to do well against the run, and yesterday they were really good on third down. They got off the field holding Miami to 3-13 on third downs. They aren't dominant against the run, but they do a good job most of the time. Because of that they put pressure on opposing offenses to come up with first downs. This is especially true as the game wears on when the opposing teams really feel the need to score points. Zaire and Bennett are great leaders. On a side note, was it Zaire who was featured briefly during College GameDay for witnessing Spider Man being arrested in Times Square and then capturing it on his phone? If so, awesome that.
Anyway, this board has contributions from many really knowledgable football minds, but I don't recall anyone predicting that this defense would play as well as it has so far this season. I'm sure there are a few who did, but they were definitely very alone in that regard. With that in mind I would hope that any SU football player who reads this board, and I really hope none of them do read this board, would keep that in the forefront of his mind. Boards like this overreact to Everything. That's true when the team is growing and struggling, and it is also true when the team is winning and growing. When you struggle it is heaps of doom and gloom, and when you thrive the expectations go through the roof. That was true before Boards like this, and today it is even more true. The Board is outside the locker room and in the dark and therefore blind most of the time.
Today it's 4 games to win at least 2! Go Cuse!!
