You, and others here, talk about "getting that second contract" as if it were something easily achievable for lots of guys, when in fact the chances of getting even a first contract are not very good for numerous talented and very accomplished players.
Maybe so, but the economics changed several years ago when the NBA players' association started pushing for less guaranteed money for draft picks and shorter contracts, so that there would be more available for veterans.
Unless you go top 10-15, the first round pick is not enough money to set you up for life anymore. To get real wealth, you have to get to the second contract.
So, yes, "getting to the second contract" is easier said than done, but as Bayside said above, you only get one chance and you need to be physically and mentally ready. NBA teams don't give you several years at the end of the bench to "figure it out". They don't carry projects for as long as they used to.
And really, that thinking only applies when you have someone who has clear NBA talent. Like Lydon, for instance, or Jerami Grant or Dion Waiters.
