I'm in a show hole, need suggestions

I’m only up to episode two—already disturbed. It’s going to take me a while to go through it all. I’m surprised it’s so popular, aside from Netflix pushing it to everyone. It’s tough to watch at times.
You haven’t gotten to the toughest episode yet, but that’s when it gets good. It starts to become about more than just a crazy stalker lady.

The Lazarus Project — Just discovered this. I’m only into episode 4 of season 1, but it’s interesting enough and nicely-made.

The Veil — Moss is good. She was my favorite part of Mad Men. This is kind of a Homeland thing, so far.

Dark Matter — One episode in. Interesting enough to continue.

Franklin — Huge production, just in sets and costuming. Wasn’t sure if I’d buy Douglas as Franklin, but the sum of the show makes it okay even if he doesn’t really seem to be acting or ‘inhabiting the role.’ Then again, who the heck knows how Ben sounded or behaved? Really cool to have Ludivine Sagnier in it. I had a bit of a crush on her when she was much younger, in Swimming Pool.

I seem to be watching a LOT of period and historical stuff over the last five-ish years. Which is weird to me. When I was younger, I had ZERO interest in history. Avoided history classes when possible. Now, I find so much of it really interesting. I am not sure if the difference is just me aging and seeing the difference in the elegance and formality of past culture vs the vulgarity of the present, or if it’s just simpler in that I’m a visual person and ‘learning’ through highly produced cinematic stuff is just what hits me, vs books and lectures. Prolly both.

Sugar — A weird show. I love Amy Ryan. The show takes a weird and bizarre twist that I don’t really like, but let’s see what they do with it. I also don’t like the strange narrations that remind me of the corny Johnny Depp car commercials. Or vintage cinema inserts….

The Sympathizer — Not really subject matter that I bond with, and the language is one I really don’t like, but I thought it would be fun to see Downey Juniors in a bunch of roles/costumes. It’s okay.

The Jinx Part 2 — True crime stuff fascinates me. This story is still interesting to me. Durst is just something else.

The Innocence Project — Again, more true crime stuff. This one, though, elicited quite a few tears. If I had significant money to give away, a lot would go to some of these victims of injustice and corruption who aren’t being compensated.

Fallout — it’s okay. Again, nicely made. I am not familiar with the video game other than the very basic gist of it so I don’t really know where it’s going except for the one very obvious plot scheme. Goggins is good. Other than that, I don’t love the casting of two of the other major roles. They aren’t bad—they just don’t do anything for me.

Bodkin — just starting this, but already I don’t quite understand how it got greenlit. I’m even more surprised that the Obamas are involved. And I have the same reaction to the idea of podcasts as they joke about in the pilot.

Phew. All that, plus the NBA playoffs (amazing) and every Red Sox game…. The screen is really all I have.

A Man In Full / Netflix

Watched a couple of episodes and remarked to myself that it had the same kind of racial themes and treatment I’d expect in a Tom Wolfe novel. Then I found out it’s based on a Tom Wolfe novel. And then I realized I had read that novel.

Which is why I don’t read anymore. I just don’t remember stuff anymore.

Anyway, it’s an interesting series. Jeff Dumb (or was he Dumber?) does a broad southern real estate mogul. Some good lines, both from- and at him.

Has anyone watched Derry Girls? Lots of fun. Turn on the closed captioning, though. The Irish slang is fast and furious.

Flap (Terms of Endearment - Larry McMurtry novel) Both read and saw the film.

Sorry—not sure what you're saying.
Jeff Daniels. Aka Flap in Terms of Endearment. A joke on top of your Jeff dumb or dumber joke. Tell you the truth he plays a real POS in that film and I never think of him in any other role.

You don’t like the language the sympathizer is in? I don’t understand what you mean by that. It’s mostly English

Perhaps I should futz around with my tv’s audio settings? But it seems like, in a program with such a significant Vietnamese cast, and being about the Vietnamese, there is quite a bit of Vietnamese spoken.

Correct, there are just a lot of languages of which I just don’t like the sound. This is one of them.

Choice of interviews tonight………The Pope or A Vampire????

Has anyone seen the series RESIDENT ALIEN? A SyFy show from a few years ago, now on Netflix. I’ve been semi-binging it the past two weeks. It is low-key fun, in a goofy way.

An alien lands in a small town in ‘Colorado.’ Has to assume a human identity to blend into society while he looks for a piece of his spaceship.

It is kinda serenely wacky. Not sure how else to describe it.

———-

On Apple, THE NEW LOOK is pretty good, at the opposite end of seriousness. If all if it is true, it shows a perspective on history that’s fascinating. It really isn’t about ‘fashion.’

———

I finished all three standup Netflix specials by TAYLOR TOMLINSON. She’s a panic. Loved that stuff.

Then watched another comic named JACQUELINE NOVAK. This woman is incredible. As I described this to my sister: she begins at a pace you will just know she can’t sustain. But she does. Half way through, you might think she is so intensely insane that she might set herself on fire at the end of the program. Her stuff is at an intellectual level I’ve never seen in comedy before. Most of the set is about a certain sekshull act, and yet it’s not ‘locker room’ stuff. It’s amazing. Please watch and share your experience.

I wrote about FEUD: CAPOTE VS THE SWANS earlier. It’s still fantastic. One of my favorite news personalities—Stephanie Ruhle—posted on instagram yesterday: “If i could inject Capote vs The Swans into my bloodstream I would.”
I second Resident Alien. Just started watching season 1 last week. The Mrs. & I find it to be really funny and charming. Appreciate the suggestion. Encourage others to give it a try.

I started binging another Jeff Daniels show, American Rust. It’s on Amazon—I had never heard of it. Pretty good. Atmospheric, kinda like that Mare Of Easttown MAX show.

It’s not perfect and it has some uncomfortable material to work with, but it’s pretty good. And Daniels is much better without that additional layer of acting to do (that awful Southern thing in A Man in Full).

Picked up Max to watch Dune 2. Liked it a bunch...
Then started watching The Newsroom. Jeff Daniels is pretty good as Will McAvoy and Alison Pill is just lovely. Finished season one. It's not The West Wing, but it holds up pretty well.

Dude. I was the biggest Newsroom evangelist for many years. I bought the dvd set and had it delivered to a friend, and then when he was finished, had him send it to my mother…. That set made the rounds. Love that show. I can’t get into The West Wing, though. At all.

Pill is great in that—which makes her ‘Zelda Fitzgerald’ in Midnight in Paris all the more entertaining. Emily Mortimer is fantastic.

The 1st season was on Showtime and was pretty good but got canceled. Had no clue there was a 2nd season now.

Binged Sunderland Til I Die over the last couple weeks. Incredible.

I finished Bodies on Netflix recently. Fascinating time travel limited series that seems to be a very weird murder mystery but becomes much more than that. Some interesting twists after it paid off some big events foreshadowed in earlier episodes. Really enjoyed it. It is pretty grim, so be prepared for that.

I started that but decided I didn’t like it, early on. Maybe I should revisit…. Same thing happened with Breaking Bad and now I’ve seen that like six times….

The first episode is definitely the slowest. Gets way more interesting and way weirder once the timelines are established.

Well, I certainty can see why you like it. Halfway through season 2 now...
David Harbour is so young! Olivia Munn reminded me much of Aubrey Plaza in season 2 episode 5.
