and not only that but we were pinned deep. Shrader starts his first drive at the 12 yard line. That's not a good situation.
His 1st play was a QB run for 2, then a Tucker run for 3. At 3rd and 5 Gilbert calls a nice play and it's executed little swing pass to Taj (who had motioned to the backfield) he picked up about 9. Should've been a first down but instead we get called for an illegal formation penalty. (and on rewatch I hate this call but it's not wrong. Bergeron lines up nearly two yards deep.)
On the redo 3rd down now at 3rd and 10. Shrader to pass. This is interesting I'd recommend a rewatch here because there is a lot going on. Within 2.5 seconds of the snap Shrader has to scramble. I believe the play is supposed to be a QB draw but it broke down quickly because of two missed blocks. First Veterello and then Tucker. Both miss stunting DEnds who are looping from outside to inside. Shrader has to bail and is sacked within 3.5 seconds of the snap. Even executed correctly play maybe picks up 5.
What's else is going on in this play. We had 4 wide (w/Benson) and single back with Tucker. Rutgers had 5 DBs in coverage, rushed 4 dropping 2 LBs into a medium zone.
First Gilbert sends Benson on a straight fly pattern which wouldn't have been open because there was a deep safety on Benson.
But you have to watch Taj Harris run his route. If I'm a coach and I see this, Taj is demoted immediately starting this Saturday. Unacceptable IMO.
