Inside Syracuse’s rough off-season: How portal misses and a lack of NIL money led to a lost year

Again nothing about the coaching only off-the-court stuff and back to the myth that the Anthony's would leave if Red is fired. Melo loves Syracuse and came for Syracuse not for Red.
Agreed, Kiyan was coming here everyday of the week and twice on Sundays. You could fire red tomorrow and Kiyan would say hes sad but excited for the future with Syracuse.

That's precisely the case. There's no excuses next year. Right or wrong, lots of people failed last year.

I've been clear that I don't think Red is a good enough on court coach but we will truly see next year.
Agree, and all I hope is that it's NCAA tournament or bust next season. I don't want any excuses, I don't want to hear about progress or moving in the right direction.

Tourney or terminated.

Agreed.
I think the only hope would be if he were to somehow bring in an Xs/Os guru of an assistant (pref two - one for O and one for D) to help him rapidly learn on the job.
I do wonder what it might look like around here a year from now if we're clearly improved but are, say, a bubble team.
In that scenario he should be fired.

Then of course we will be sold another year and it wasn't really tournament or bust. It will be look at the improvement the program is on the upswing can't let go of him now etc etc etc etc we all know what is going to happen.
Is it not, as so many on here love to point out, all about results?

It will be 3 years with no tournament at a P4 school that should 10000% be grounds to be fired especially one with our history. We will have gone from bubble team to bottom of the barrel to bubble team on his watch. Getting the program back to where it was when he took over isn't progress because he bottomed it out this year since he was unprepared.

Wouldn’t be good enough in my eyes. Short of being in the top 7 seeds next year I don’t see this ending well.
So going from horrible to at-large tourney team wouldn't be significant enough improvement for you?

Again nothing referencing that programs do not fire coaches after 2 years unless their is a scandal. Kenny Payne won 12 games in 2 years. Autry has already won twice that many in his 1st 2 years even with this years garbage performance.

I'm not arguing Autry is a good coach or even an ok coach, I'm arguing that in order to not get that 3rd year he is going to have to walk on to half court at the dome and start drowning puppies.

They didn't know who was going to be available? Just about everyone is available.
You think the big SEC schools are waiting to see? It's called back channel communications and it goes on long before the end of the season. What is going to be so different for Cuse this time? Hopefully Kline has targets already mapped out. But how much additional $ will the staff actually have. My guess is not that much --- unless Melo is kicking in a million or two.

My only hope is that with the melo infusion of NIL this off season if we do have a good year that includes a tourney berth and even a run to the second weekend (all doubtful) we do not give Red a knee jerk reaction extension.

Would you agree that Leffew doesn't make this team a tourney team?
What's kind of interesting is that guess who is the worst defender (with regular minutes) by BBref metrics on UGA?

Interestingly enough, he's got the best BPR on evanmiya which is driven almost entirely by offense. Seems like he's a talented scorer but weak defensively - which apparently was Red's plan for this season.

If we get in as a 10 seed playing in the first 4 with an 11-9 or so ACC record it really wouldn't be any different from the end of the JB era. I know you're not an SU football fan, but it would feel an awful lot what the football program went through with Dino. Doing JUST ENOUGH to hang on at the end. In year 3 I expected to be competing somewhere in the top 4 or 5 of the ACC standings. That's where we need to be.

Leffew's play has really fallen off as the season has gone on. He's not been good in SEC play. I don't think he would have helped as much as people think. He'd be a step down from JJ and a step up from Carlos.

Yeah, his conference numbers would fit right in at Syracuse.

The most baffling/troubling thing to me in that article was Red claiming that last year's portal was the "first year that we really had to dive into it because my first year we had a lot of continuity".

Two years ago we lost Girard, Torrance and Edwards, and brought in Starling, Cuffe, Westry and McLeod. That's not a total roster upheaval, but it's not exactly "a lot of continuity".

I don't understand how this staff could go through the Edwards saga and not be prepared the following season to address that kind of circumstance. Did Autry think he'd never again face a situation where a player asks for more money after a deal was seemingly struck?

Plus, it seems like the staff knew about everyone who was departing last March aside from Brown. It's unfathomable that they didn't so much as hire a consultant to help them plan for those replacements in January/February.

It's all just more evidence that Red was thoroughly unprepared to manage all aspects of the program when he took over. And I don't understand how that could be for a guy who spent several years as the most likely in house option to replace JB.

I tend to agree, and moreover I don't see a realistic way forward with Red as the HC. But... I'm just looking at the fairly likely scenario a year from now in which the team is clearly better but not "better enough" in the eyes of a sizeable segment...

I don’t have access to this article and will not be paying to view it. But the first thing I thought when I read the headline was spin cycle. As mentioned previously in this article, article was put in motion, as well as Jim B the other day complaining and putting it on NIL. Laying the foundation to bring back Red, while trying to keep the fanbase happy and explain the issues.
Broken record but run an offense, stop taking what everyone knows are the worst shots and stop going under screens all day long if you want me to have faith in the coach

Maybe other things unseen are a problem but we can all see obvious problems

I don't agree.
Sadiq plays the 4
Donnie plays three positions in order. 3 4 5
Petar plays primarily the 4 some 5
Starting five:
1; portal
2: JJ
3: Portal
4: Donnie
5; Portal.
Anyone think Donnie is highly likely to be poached?

I'm fairly certain if we go 20-11 next year and barely make the tournament that he will be back for year 4. I won't be happy about it, but that will give something for the school to sell predicated on a returning freshman class that could possibly get better in year 2.
