The golf coach works with a guy who is very much into NIL and is close to SU. The story was that when Autry was hired, this guy told him to set up his own NIL stream, and mot rely on SU, because they spread the money around. When Autry was fired, he told the guy he should have listened to him. Evidently, Gerry already has something set up. (We didn’t get into particulars of the workings of it.)

So this has been covered a bit with Fran in that he had connects before he stepped foot on campus.

I’ll just add on with this: Obviously Gerry has a relationship with AW. Furthermore people who represent a community and bring so much pride to a community have a different level of support around them. Gerry is beloved in NEPA, Syracuse and picked up a lot of fans in just two years in the capital district.

What we don’t know won’t hurt us, just like it doesn’t hurt Duke fans to not know exactly how they have the funds for the rosters they do( don’t take that to equate total resources to levels of dark Duke money). With that said I’d be shocked if he didn’t have an entourage of willing NIL supporters in his hip pocket and some that he didn’t even know of. Don’t discount the JB effect on that front too.

Anyways coming from NEPA I can tell you there is money around and if there was a person who could get access to more of it for the purpose of sports, Gerry would be high on the list. I think we all need to just watch how things shape up when you have a larger staff committed to the task at hand with a ton of support gets to work.

Not confusing at all. Someone advised Red to take care of raising NIL himself and he didn't. Afterward told the guy he was right & should have listened to him.

I'd have to look (I wont) but was at two separate events where Red popped a QR code to donate on the spot and calls were made the next day to donate.

Again, this is 3rd hand, and it was not an in depth conversation. We didn’t really get into all the ins and outs of how it works. My coach is working with the NIL guy on trying to figure a way to set up some NIL deals for his really talented junior golfers. Evidently Gerry (and Fran) have established an NIL fund each of them to control. They don’t want to go through a University directed one, because SU wants/needs/is required to (not sure which) spread those NIL dollars among all the sports. By keeping things out of the a university’s control, it all goes to football/basketball.

Was that for NIL or to the university for the coaches fund or revenue share funding? I don't know, can a coach raise funds directly for NIL? I don't believe a school can.

Basically what is happening at Duke and other schools who have done well with meeting NIL needs even if they like to call it “Duke dark money” for clicks.

Can a school directly raise funds for NIL or does it have to be done by an outside independent organization, like a collective?

You are absolutely correct. Player compensation comes from two buckets - revenue sharing which is controlled by the University and capped by rule and NIL activity which can be supported by but not brokered by the University and has no cap.

Despite popular opinion SU worked diligently with a commercial NIL broker to replace SANIL but terms were found to be egregious and no deal could be reached. They also offered support to a donor group to set up a stand alone SU Athletics NIL Fund but to date have not quite gotten over the goal line. Lots of moving pieces here.
