Anybody can run zone effectively for short stretches, especially with upperclassmen, which is what Lavin is talking about I think. They couldn't run it for the majority of the game and expect to win though, not against good competition.

Lavin has himself a very good team this year. A team that SU had defeated before collapsing.

lavin gets some good athletes to play for him. not so sure he coaches them up all that much.
