Is anyone confident we can have a winning team under Red next year?

Melo isn’t dumb. He can see it. Would he push for a change? Who knows. If Kiyans development was #1 he wouldn’t be coming here
Recruits like Kiyan can get stuck behind a 6th year player somewhere else. Is he even ranked higher than Elijah Moore was?

Who could possibly be confident we will have a winning team next year? I mean if you're talking winning record, maybe. However, not an ncaa tournament team. Two things most concerning to me about Red: 1) He struck out on all PGs he went for in the portal when this was priority #1. He settled on Carlos. He continues to give a lot of minutes to Carlos. He got 19 last night!; 2) Many of our guys are playing worse as the season goes on.

The definition of insanity is doing the same things and hoping for different results. We've already seen sufficient evidence to indicate that Red doesn't have a quality offensive concept, that our defensive effort is horrendous, that this coaching staff overall doesn't seem to "teach" well given the lack of improvement, that they miss a lot of their key recruiting targets, and that their player evaluation on the recruiting trail seems poor.

It would be one thing if there were indicators that the coaching and offensive / defensive sets were good, but we just lacked the horses to beat the best teams. If that were the case, we'd be playing well, the players would be working hard, and we could reasonably project that as Red continues to build his team on the recruiting trail / via the portal, that putting better players into a quality system would eventually yield better results.

If that were the case, it would make sense to bring him back.

The problem is, none of that is what we're seeing. We are barely competitive with the worst programs in our conference, and get routinely blown out by the better opponents we play. To suggest that we have a lousy offensive system is putting it lightly, and we can't defend anybody. Some players have regressed, some never seem to show that they belong at the ACC level, and we don't have any elite prospects coming in.

Running it back is dumb under these circumstances. Better to fail fast and not let the program crater even further, to make the job that much more difficult for the next coach.

4 Year Plan...4 Year Plan

The fact that a poster mentioned that the Athletic Program/Bball program talk about a 4 year plan behind the scenes, in todays environment is insane to me.

Good coaches, the longer it goes, the better it looks. The opposite is happening, the longer it goes, the worse he/it looks. Its too bad because last year, the record did improve, and it looked better when you squinted real hard.

I’ve made my peace with Autry coming back next season. I know how SU operates.

And I’ve made enough trips around the sun to know that anything can happen. I’m sure there’s a multiverse out there where SU wins 25 games next season and nabs a #4 seed in the tourney.

But I’ve also watched many bad teams and bad coaches in my decades as a sports fan. They all have many commonalities. And it’s exceedingly rare for a phoenix to rise from those ashes. What I’ve seen from SU hoops the past season and a half looks a lot like the Mayo/MacPherson/Rust Patriots, the Joe Kerrigan/Bobby Valentine Red Sox, and the Pitino Celtics.

I’d like nothing more than Red and his supporters here to shove a gigantic crow down my throat next season. I just don’t see it. Sometimes we know.

the only thing I am confident about is that I won’t be watching much cuse basketball if he’s still the coach.

WOW - Ville fan not holding any punches and sees exactly what they saw with Payne. Yikes.

The inevitable national b'ball media article is coming "Fall of the House of Orange" or whatever the crap title will be...

Prolly end of season before season tix renewal deadline and the administration will have nowhere to hide on this.

Couple that with the spiraling shortfall on home game turnstyle traffic and $$, and decisions will have to be made. We can't run a 30K venue that brings in 5K per game. The mounting revenue loss will compound to breaking point.

Hopefully Wildhack is backchannelling and preparing for the inevitable.

There was a 60 second stretch tonight in the first half where they played and fought and battled with everything they had. That was one of the only times I saw that kind of fight and battle all year. The biggest problem is, that should be occurring all game, all season long. Effort and fight, is attitude and motivation achieved through coaching. There is no excuse for those stretches to be such a rarity, none.
And the crowd, including myself, actually stood up, cheered and applauded.
We all recognize the effort. It is just so rare with this team.
Sometimes it seems like only Taylor and Cuffe put it all out there to win - show the never surrender mentality.

The Dome is going to be empty the rest of the year. Just wait until UNC and Duke get louder cheers than Cuse. That for me will be rock bottom, when opposing team fans outshine the Orange.

Yikes. The rival fan base legit feels so badly for us that they want us to be better. (They just went through this themselves with Kenny Payne - so they know how it is)
Everyone can see it now, theres no denying it.

We aren’t winning with just the freshmen coming in and I have zero idea who’s worth keeping or who will stay.

We need a complete change in philosophy. We play meathead basketball. We can’t make 3’s and we don’t get enough shots at the rim.

Tonight was the 13th time in 21 losses where we have been beat by at least 15 points.

It feels like we are starting completely over again next season.

“The Lampkin recruitment excitement by some here reeks of the football board under Dino when people would get excited about a 3 star defensive end that commits to us after only being recruited by Hofstra and Central Michigan”

Was looking at the Lampkin thread and you really hit it on the head immediately. This is the Dino era of basketball on the board. We pretend this talent we have is better than it is. And if you dare suggest it’s not, you are a bad guy.

Imagine starting Choppa, yanking him after he narrowly missed 2 good looks and then reinserting him with under 2 minutes left. It’s almost like he was trying to further ruin his confidence. If the kid isn’t good enough to go back into the game, why is he starting. It’s like there is no plan or thought. It’s the same type of logic where red said last offseason I want to play an up-and-down game where we take a ton of shots and play great pressure defense. Get me a fat center who only blocked five shots last year and can’t move on either end.
I agree.
Why are they starting Moore and then yanking him pretty fast? He is a freshman and has literally regressed so much it is almost unbelievable. He had an eagerness and joy on the court earlier this year that has frankly been sucked right out of him. Gerry we sure do miss you!
What the hell are they doing with Cuffe? Literally in the last 5 games, his minutes and how they use him in the flow of the game differed drastically in each game. Is he our sixth man? Our tenth man? Our break glass man? I doubt if he even knows.
Why does Carlos get chance after chance no matter how badly he plays? He started the second half yesterday after being barely seen in the BC win. He did nothing to deserve playing so much yesterday though at least he did score.
And is Naheem so bad he cant even play 4 minutes a game? I thought he was starting and blocking shots last year before his injury. Now he and Chance are literally playing Where's Waldo.

And I still say in most games the players are playing the lets hope defense.
Lets move around a little bit and hope either the other team misses a shot or Lucas/Cuffe can somehow use great defense to stop them.
God forbid they expend any energy - gotta save that for the times we have a fastbreak and miss the layup or slam.
I used to watch SU as a child with my dad - watched that last great Danforth team with Jimmy Lee.
So, I go back a long ways.
This is the worst, absolute worst SU basketball team that I have seen .
And this team is worse than Robinson football bad. Much worse!

That’s nightmare fuel. You are so right. Maybe even Saturday vs ND might be a 70/30 split. When Duke comes here they will be the home team….

Yeah I want to see how bad it gets/looks. Will that force change? TBD, I think its 50/50.
