Is anyone crushed as I am?

Devastated the rest of our games are so winnable we really blew a golden chance to legitimately be relevant again. A 9-10 win season will be nice but we would have been in the drivers seat for a playoff bid the discussion around our program if we remained undefeated into October and maybe even November would have been waht we needed to start getting 4 and 5 star recruits again. Sorry but a nice 9/10 win season doesn't do that. I had 300 on the ml too and really really really needed us to pull that one out for me. We were 1 more big play offense or defense away from winning.

I was at the game, and I’ll admit, I let myself think we were going to win a couple times today. Especially when we went up 23-13... only to let them get that TD back in less than 2 minutes.

That 4th and 6... ugh... That was the play.

We didn’t play perfect and neither did they. It was frustrating that a team with a backup, backup QB was running it down our throats but we definitely tired out on defense, and Etienne is a freak.

I did think we were wayyyy too cute on offense. Lots of misdirection and edge plays that weren’t fooling anyone. I don’t know if it was schematic to protect ED from Clemson’s line of what, but i didn’t love that.

Oh well... Beat Pitt and we’re 5-1, ranked in the top 25 and coming home. This game next weekend might be even bigger than today. We are right there on the cusp of being a “somebody” in CFB.

Thats not the whole game. The O was waaaay too conservative in the second half. We didn't adjust with play calling, and it killed us. Given a 9 pt lead at half, their 3rd string true frosh qb coming in and the fact we had 3 big TOs in our favor; we didn't get it done and the biggest factor was playimg scared and protecting a 9 pt lead.

The offensive play calling was brutal. The rpos were slow and non aggressive as gius took the ball into the line. Threw one pass over 20 yards, nothing over the middle. Just not aggressive. DINO was taken to the woodshed in the second half and his offense, not the D was the problem here. Not the D.
So, what would you have called instead?

Can’t rise too high too fast. They would’ve been bound for a let down before ND if they won. They just aren’t there yet to maintain such a level of success. I’d rather be 10-2 with close losses to Clemson and ND than the same record with losses to ND and Pitt. This is the intermediate step in the rebuild.

This one definitely hurt. I do think positively about the team though regarding the game. My dad and I watched the game together and while we were disappointed, we certainly were proud of the team. It's unfortunate we couldn't hold on but it is genuinely nice to feel some pride about the team again. My father is an ex-cuse football player and he would get so frustrated for YEARS about some of the losses and how they were occurring. He wasn't like that today and is looking forward to next week. We'll be traveling down to the Wake Forest game.

It's a shame we lost but GO CUSE!

No worse feeling in sports than being on the cusp of a major upset and seeing it slip away. In losses there are always woulda coulda's that potentially change the outcome. Dungey said it best "we didn't execute". As a fan, I am deflated and kinda ornery as it seemed like the stars aligned, as everything we needed to happen to win, did. Just came down to execution when it mattered most. We sputtered both times. Sucks. Have to tell myself that no matter how I feel, the players feel it waaaaay more than me... Hope the players don't get too down.

Actually it's the first time in a long time, I let myself get emotionally into the game, wrong day to do that, lol. In football it's worse because we have to wait till next week in order to truly put this one behind us, and some haunt us for many many moons (games mentioned above, and i'll add Oklahoma to that list). Basketball is a lot easier to move on from...

My hope is this unites the team and this loss doesn't snowball to derail the season. It could really go either way, in my mind.

none of us can be as crushed as Cody Conway
I really don't blame him for being downfield on the 4th and 1. Those RPOs are so tough for linemen. If Dungey hands it off or keeps it they still have to block, and it's not like they can see what's happening in the backfield.

I'd be crushed too OP but there's no shame in losing to Clemson on the road. 11-1 season is still within reach. This team is too good. You guys earned a lot of respect from Clemson fans let me tell you.

Not crushed, but a bit pissed, because it really wouldn't have taken much more (Dungey not throwing that pass to Nykeim in the dirt, a couple of spots that I think could have been more accurate, the refs hanging on to some flags and throwing some others) to win that one.

I'm not blaming anybody. But I do hope the team takes it out on Pitt next week.

He could have loaded the box numerous times and didn’t. You do understand football don’t you?
correct me if I’m wrong but Clemson was playing with 3 wides and a single back set.

We had already gone to a single safety high and 7 in the box.

You go 8 in the box and you have no help over the top.

That would have been a pretty big gamble.

I dvr’d but watched live and deleted so cannot go back and check but that is my recollection.

Disappointed that the team could not come away with a much needed program changing win but optimistic we will win at least 8 games this season.

After sitting in the sun today at Clemson it was brutally hot and humid. Much worse than the dome due to the sun. I honestly believe that if we had more depth on the defensive line we would not have wore down due to the heat and the fact the game plan chnaged to ground and pound.with the back up QB in the game.

anyone else the team was home this week so we can show the team how proud we are of them?

Thats BS, such a cliche, give me a break. We have plenty of depth do NOW its up to the cosching staff to properly scheme and play with these guys. Give me a break, do not want to hear about the talent or depth argument. We had every break in the world go our way . We didnt go and get it in the 2nd half and that's on our staff.

Give us a break. You don't want to hear about talent and depth? Look at the ranking of recruiting classes for the last 4 years. You might not want to hear it, but the fact is Clemson draws better athletic talent into their program then we do. The number of stars you get coming out of high school isn't the be all, end all, but it does matter.

As for criticism of the coaching staff, some of it is fair, but it's easy to second guess. We had a lead on the road in the second half. Normally, that's when you try to grind some clock and run the ball. Let's be blunt, running between the tackles is not this teams' strong suit. The only thing that was really working well for us was the putting it in the air and going after their secondary That put Dino in a tough spot. Those are risky plays that don't keep the moving. He either had to try to do what we don't do very well or keep taking risks running with ED or keeping throwing deep. Either would have been second guessed even more if it didn't work.

Yes, honestly, dont want to hear about stars and recruiting. We played with them. Gamez like this come down to cosching. We had the better qb, oline, specials, and for the night, our dline was at least equal. This qas our ballgame if our staff played to win.

Personally more crushed Jan 1 1957...leave it at that

Okay I bit (and for a second I thought you might actually be Jim Ringo until I read that he passed in 2007):

1957 Cotton Bowl Classic

The 1957 Cotton Bowl Classic featured the TCU Horned Frogs and the Syracuse Orangemen, played on New Year's Day.

Background
Syracuse had just one loss (to Pittsburgh, who ended up losing in the Gator Bowl), but they were 8th ranked, led by Jim Brown, who would play his last game before becoming an NFL player. TCU had finished 2nd in the Southwest Conference, but was invited to play in the Cotton Bowl due to first place Texas A&M being under NCAA sanctions. [1] This was TCU's fifth Cotton Bowl appearance, having lost their previous four (and not winning since 1937). This was Syracuse's first appearance, along with their first bowl game since the 1953 Orange Bowl.
Game summary
TCU had two 14 point leads, both near the end of the halves. John Nikkel started the scoring for TCU with a touchdown catch from Chuck Curtis, and in the second quarter, Jim Shofner caught a touchdown to make it 14-0. But Jim Brown ran for two touchdowns in a span of 6:52 to tie the game at halftime. Late in the third quarter after Brown fumbled the ball back to TCU, Curtis scored on a touchdown run to give TCU the lead back. After another Brown fumble in the fourth quarter, Jim Swink ran in for a touchdown to give TCU a 28-14 lead with 11:44 to go. But Brown would not be stopped as Syracuse went 49 yards in 13 plays and scored on a Brown run. Brown went up for his third PAT attempt of the day to try and narrow the lead to 7.
But Chico Mendoza blocked the extra point, keeping the score 28-20. But Syracuse had one last drive in them, going 43 yards in 3 plays and with 1:17 left, Jim Ridlon caught a pass from Charles Zimmerman to narrow the lead to 28-27. Syracuse kicked it deep but TCU held on and did not let Syracuse get the ball back, in what would turn out to be TCU's last bowl win until 1998. Jim Brown and Norman Hamilton were named Outstanding Players of the game.

Better Oline...lol. Guess it was on the coaching that their OL was opening holes big enough for a truck to drive through, and ours was getting blown up? Dabo must’ve told them to BLOCK BETTER, and they listened.
