Is Shafer a win toss defer or receive guy?

i'm guessing he is a receive kind of guy. Lets get the ball and see what we've got. Doug was a pessimist in that respect. He deferred every time and went with a handoff to Jerome every time as well. he might as well have written the plays out for the opposition. He never deviated from that ritual. If I give him the benefit of the doubt, I might think he wanted a safe play to make the first hit of the game to loosen up the kids but i'm not really happy with that supposition.:bat:

Yep. He's not just a defensive coach, he's a HARD NOSED defensive coach. I have to think if we win the toss he'll send the defense out there and try to smack the other team in the mouth early.

Not sure Doug was a "pessimist". If you have confidence in your defense, deferring is a good strategy. If the D does its job and gives you a 3 and out, you end up with better field position, on average, than a kickoff...and you get the ball to start the second half. On paper, it works.

Taking the value of emotion out of it the best strategic value is to defer. Mainly because you get the ball first in the 2nd half so you could possibly get 2 possessions in a row. In a back and forth game that is almost as valuable as a turnover. Plus, if you stop them on their first drive you've gained an even bigger advantage.

I get that and its valid indeed. This a huge game for both schools. Scoring first and fast is critical as well. If like you said our defense can snuff them down,thats just as big. Thanks.

I would always defer the advantage of having the ball first in the 2nd half is worth more than having the ball first when its 0-0. It could be a blowout at halftime, but having the ball first in the 2nd half is the smarter strategy.
