Is the proverbial shoe about to drop on college basketball royalty?

Not wanting to pay up isn't something I'd hang my hat on here if I were any school involved in recruiting a kid who ended up taking money. The fact that a school is in the race but dropped out on a kid that most likely ended up getting paid could simply mean the price went over the cap space that the school/boosters had available.

I'm just pointing out that there is a continuum in play here, ranging from a school paying ZERO dollars to a school paying a kid $250k+. Just because school A doesn't want to shell out $250k to buy the latest shiny new McDonald's All-American model doesn't mean they wouldn't shell out say $100k.

[Again, I am not saying SU pays players. I don't believe they do. I'm just pointing out that this stuff isn't so cut and dry.]

that's fine if it went over the cap as long as we didn't pay out.

but for the record, i honestly dont care anymore if we're included.

Pretty much NOBODY knew that the Adidas schools were being investigated, until after the FBI went public with it.
You think they're going to tip their hand re: Nike?
IF/WHEN the hammer comes down, that's when we all find out.

I'd be more concerned about players like Donte or CMac, except we just got thru a decade-long colonoscopy from the NCAA, and they didn't turn up anything more than what was effectively some unpaid parking tickets and library late fees.

The only more recent player that gives me a little pause about how we got him - is DBaze.
I sincerely hope that we didn't "pull a Louisville" and continue any recruiting shenanigans while already being on probation for another set of prior violations.

Llvll AD - "They'll NEVER suspect us now!!! We just got done getting caught! We're PRE-DISASTERED!!" :p
We are clean on Bazley.
He was going to Ohio State and then Matta got fired.
Then we hired Griffin.
Griff had a relationship with the program while at Dayton. Bazley wasn’t interested in Dayton though.
Griff came to Syracuse and that was big enough for Bazley.
He liked the program and we got him.
It wasn’t a blue chips incident.

What scares me about Fab is that is his final 2 were us and Louisville.
We know Louisville paid under Pitino what made Fab pick SU?
A taxi driver recognized him while visiting SU.

You also have to consider the source (Thamel). He is a snake, and low on scruples, and it would not be out of character for him to greatly exaggerate in his reporting.
Thamel wasn't only one that got this info.

I'd be careful saying that without knowing if we're clean...there aren't many "Hall-of-Fame coaches" still active...

Off the top of my head going into this year along with JB:
Coach K
Roy Williams
Pitino
Calipari
Izzo

I'm concerned too, don't get me wrong, but as far as we know, isn't the investigation been limited to Adidas schools?
The FBI investigation was related to mostly Adidas schools, because that's where the money was ultimately coming from. But during the course of the investigation it appears that they found evidence that ropes in 30-50 D1 schools. Adidas only has 13 schools under contract. 50-13 = Nike and UA

One thing that needs to be kept in mind is that I think the FBI investigation is only based upon Adidas and maybe other sneaker companies. If players are getting paid by a school or their boosters or "friends", they wouldn't be involved in this investigation.

I’d be careful. The only media person mentioning 50 schools is Thamel and for whatever reason people are taking his take over everyone else who has reported on this. Based on his previous history he has known to exaggerate to make a good story.

Maybe. No idea what Millers information is...

if booster A gives player B money to go to school X, is that illegal by law? or just an NCAA violation?

Off the top of my head, Schools that I think are going to get hit hard that aren't public:

Kansas
Western Kentucky
Seton Hall
Any team with the name "Texas" in it that isn't Texas.
Kentucky
Providence
Florida state
...

Bold WKU and remove Providence.

All I can say is when I lived at Day Hall freshman year, Johnnie Murant would drive up to the dining hall, parking illegally in the circle, run in to get breakfast, and drive off in a new Jaguar with Florida plates. Not sure how a poor kid from Newark had a nice car from Florida. I know this isn't basketball and there could be a plausible explanation for him driving the Jag, but he may be one of many receiving some incentive to come to Cuse

I'm still trying to figure out how a private corporate entity (Nike, Adidas) giving a kid money to go to a college is a federal crime? I can see where that college violates NCAA rules if it is knowingly involved in the payoff.

I think you’ve hit on the federal case weakness. No it doesn’t violate law.

Wasn't he going to Miami originally? Obviously Miami gave him the car and he never gave it back.

It’s not. They may make argument that schools taking federal money cannot bribe recruits but it’s weak.

Did player B pay taxes on that income?
There is your federal law violation and the IRS/DOJ way in.

There's been other kids that have received money and the NCAA nailed the school/player. Never heard of any legal issues. Maybe it just wasn't made public.

If school X thru their shoe company is paying player A 100k to go that school and player A isn’t paying federal taxes on that income that violates federal law.
