Is the proverbial shoe about to drop on college basketball royalty?

There's been other kids that have received money and the NCAA nailed the school/player. Never heard of any legal issues. Maybe it just wasn't made public.
Right the tax issue is a player issue. Not a school/agent issue.

Doesn't it depend on the amount? I'm no tax expert, but can't you gift someone a certain amount of $$ per year without it having to be taxed? Strictly talking IRS and law, not NCAA rules.

If its hundred dollar handshakes like Troy Smith at Ohio State that isn’t violating tax laws.

If you are getting 50-100k to go a school Uncle Sam wants it cut of that money.

Looks like Greedy and the assault guys were all on Keno's watch: Providence kicks top scorer Peterson off team So I can hold out hope that Cooley's one of the good guys...
This is a pretty large thread, and informative to read honestly. UConn's board doesn't even have a thread about it. (apparently they have bigger concerns)

In regards to Providence it would be a shame, they are one of only a couple schools in all of division 1 who have never even been investigated by the NCAA for any violation in any sport. I would hate for that to end with zero to show for it.

Greedy Peterson made sure some BABC players including Nerlens Noel got their knob shined by a couple willing coeds on a weekend trip to the school. That's what got him chucked, Father Shanley personally threw him out of school. Million dollar athlete with a 2 cent brain.

What are you talking about?
The schools aren’t going to get criminally charged. It’s individual coaches, assistant coaches, boosters, shoe company personnel in the crosshairs for criminal charges.

The current indictments for Richardson, Person, Bland, and the others don’t put any criminality on their schools.

The tax issue what the feds would use to squeeze the kids and flip them
To move up.

My only point is that the FBI investigation is dealing with sneaker companies and the flow of money.

Jake is there a reason Kansas and Duke are not on your list or is it because it's assumed?

Yes up to 15k per year in 2018.

This isn’t a tax case and never has been.
It’s corruption/bribery.

Right but if they want cooperation they need the kids to flip.
If I am Brian Bowen and I got 100k to go to Louisville why would I rat on them or the Adidas people?

If he or his family never declared that 100k and it can be proven he received it then the IRS would audit him. I doubt anyone wants an audit from the IRS.

He cooperates and they get the Louisville and Adidas people.

We recruited Malachi for a while, IIRC. But I feel like Rak came out of nowhere at the end of his recruitment to commit to SU. That scares me.
As has been said, Cooney had a lot to do with Rak coming. They had played ball together before.

If Rak and Malachi were questioned by the FBI it could simply be about incentives ($$) offered to them by other schools.

So my questions is if the FBI does find issues at a number of these colleges and universities, other than the people involved being fired, arrested and getting jail time/fines/etc. what happens to the school?

I haven't followed this topic that closely but did the NCAA ever do anything to Arizona? Is Arizona being "investigated" by the NCAA? I ask but didn't see anything,

What could the NCAA really do if 32 major D1 schools, are found to be complacent in these activities? I could be totally wrong here, but wouldn't any major action directly affect TV contracts, which would probably be just cause to void the contract(s) (illegal activities are usually clause for dismissal, I would imagine?), drastically decreasing revenue for the conferences, schools, and NCAA, which could potentially lead to these schools breaking away from the governing body (NCAA) it self. Again all guessing and conjecture but it seems a risk proposition for the NCAA to come down too hard because its in their own self interest right?

Off the top of my head going into this year along with JB:
Coach K
Roy Williams
Pitino
Calipari
Izzo

I'm hoping it's Williams, Pitino and Calipari.

All I can say is when I lived at Day Hall freshman year, Johnnie Murant would drive up to the dining hall, parking illegally in the circle, run in to get breakfast, and drive off in a new Jaguar with Florida plates. Not sure how a poor kid from Newark had a nice car from Florida. I know this isn't basketball and there could be a plausible explanation for him driving the Jag, but he may be one of many receiving some incentive to come to Cuse

Agent money can come afterwards, after the kid signs.

Wasn't there a problem at Providence with Marvin Barnes, back in the Ernie Di Gregorio days?

I'm still trying to figure out how a private corporate entity (Nike, Adidas) giving a kid money to go to a college is a federal crime? I can see where that college violates NCAA rules if it is knowingly involved in the payoff.
Tax evasion

Maybe, but they'd really be going back a long way for that. There were others at Providence then, Johnny Egan, the top player in Hartford and our good friend, John Thompson.

Kansas is definitely on my list. Duke will be interesting to watch...I'm not sure they'll be found to be actively paying players

Yep, he was accused of beating a teammate up (with a tire iron). We have had plenty of fights with players over the years. Lost 5 players to a brawl of campus under Welsh. Just have never had an NCAA investigation for anything in any sport

Beyond the taxes, I believe I remember reading somewhere when this first came out that Adidas was essentially hiding money from investors to use for these off-the-books exchanges, which would be an SEC violation.

How about parents?
