Is there anything to be done that will make this team worth watching the rest of the season?

The Hofstra who lost to Columbia, Iona, and Temple? Hofstra might be the 6th best team of the 10 we’ve played this year.
I don’t believe that. Davis is the best guard we’ve played. Kingz is a good defensive player and he still got in the lane at will. His floaters are almost automatic. His arms are really long and he just lays it over the rim. That last pass for the winning three was a big time play. I won’t be surprised if they make the tournament. Their bigs are serviceable and play within themselves. To their credit, in the last week they went on the road and beat two ACC teams.

What bugs me is that the worst type of coach is one that doesn’t get help when needed.

I hate to be so pessimistic so early on especially after taking Houston to OT and beating Tennessee but I just am frustrated for the fanbase.

It’s not even worth playing these next 3 buy games. If anything they reinforce our terrible ISO offense and bad shot selection. We’re going to walk into the Clemson game thinking we can just be the more energetic team and win and we won’t.

In order for Autry to have any credibility he needs to get someone in to spend the next 2 and a half weeks teaching these guys how to run a simple offensive scheme highlighting the front court and fix the free throws.

And Freeman needs to either hang it up or play tomorrow and at 100%. As annoying as it is for us his day to day garbage is just as toxic for a team with no Alpha.

I wouldn’t bet on Autry making it but a coach that can figure out his own issues and fix them may have a future and something to build on. One that does nothing but expects different results doesn’t belong here.

If you need a reason to watch hoops this winter I’d catch more of other teams playing. Theres been a lot of lamenting about the decline of college basketball in recent years (much of it well deserved). But I think this has been one of the better starts to a college basketball season in recent memory.

Last year there was 1 freshman phenom. This year it feels like there’s 10. There are 7 or 8 teams with elite talent that could make a realistic case for being best in the country. And there’s a handful of upstart programs who are putting together awesome years (like Nebraska or Vanderbilt).

There’s a lot of good college basketball happening right now. Unfortunately none of it involves Syracuse.
My brother went to UConn so I watch some of their games. It’s like you’re watching a different sport altogether the quality of play is so much higher. If Hurley were coaching SU we’d be 9-1.

Well, Betsey is one of the few guys who can make 3s, and it’s really hard to make any from the bench.
Sure, but when the 3s aren't falling, he doesn't bring nearly what Sadiq does. Therefore, I'd like to see him get some run and if he's on, keep him in but if he's missing multiple shots (i.e. Kansas) put Sadiq back in.

Hofstra is better than: Houston, Kansas, Iowa State and/or Tennessee? St. Joe’s? Maybe the Hawks, but SJ beat Temple while Hofstra did not.

They’re either the 5th or 6th best team we’ve played. Maybe they win the CAA tourney and get a bid. They sure won’t get an at large bid.

If we weren't the worst foul shot team in the country, we might even be undefeated. Number 365 out of 365 teams. Good grief!

Autrys is cooked in my opinion but I also need to have a reason to watch Hoops this Winter.

Just some thoughts but what do others think.

-Can we get even more out of Kyle? He’s proven to be the best player on the court even against elite competition. He also just doesn’t foul. The coaches and guards are inept but is there a simpler way to just get him the ball. He’s just the best player we’ve seen in an Orange jersey at the 5 in years, 1st team ACC caliber player. Put the team in his hands, he’s a Senior and the toughest strongest player on the team.

-When (if) Freeman comes back can we find a way to limit the damage our Guards are doing to us? Can we go bigger/stronger with Kyle/Freeman/Sadiq/Kingz and whichever Guard is playing best?

-Can they hire an assistant to only coach free throws and sit on the bench with the players and help them real time in games before and after shots. I don’t know if it will do anything but at least as fans we see something happening. It’s a slap in the face to all of us if someone doesn’t step in and do something about being worst in the league.
I love Kyle, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to “put the team in his hands.” He’s not the kind of player you can just feed and expect bucket conversions from. He’s tough and scrappy and “a fighter,” but not offensively skilled enough to be a go-to. Think about how Christmas developed. Or Onuaku. Those were 5s who couod demand the ball and deserve the opportunity to be That Guy.

We need him to continue to be impactful and augment everyone. A glue guy, the way Draymond Green’s offense is considered a bonus.

I don’t know what to say about the FT shooting. You can go ten years without seeing one opponent with the kind of funky forms we have in two players in one season. I don’t think it’s practical to have someone on the bench, coaching FTs. How would that work? Would prolly be as much of a detriment, just the additional psychology involved.

3pt percentage should improve with better guard play making, but that won’t improve without actual plays/offensive flow/schemed movement.

Hire a real proven head basketball coach. Pay the money however much it is and make the hiring it about basketball not politics.

I can tell you from direct observation that all of those words you used to describe Red’s practices are inaccurate. There’s a lot of energy, high energy, a lot of activity, much more movement and emphasis on conditioning. If you’re talking about a boring lackluster practice, you’re talking about a Jim Boeheim practice the final eight years of his tenure here. Those practices barely lasted 90 minutes and they were glorified shoot around. The difference in intensity between Red’s practices and Boeheim’s practices toward the end is night and day.

This isn’t where the problem lies.
Thanks for sharing this. I can’t believe how lazy JB got in the last years of his tenure.

This is the snakebit part of Autry's regime. Even the best coaches early on need some things to break right for them and he seems to have alot break wrong for him. Many of them his own fault though.

In Autry's case it just feels like there will always be something. Let's say we play Clemson and shoot 80% from FT and Donnie is back healthy getting his 20/10, Offense looks serviceable and rebounding is back.

Next thing we know the team will "forget" how to play defense the next game against a bottom feeder then.

We're now at the point where we know it's a trend not an isolated thing with Autry.

But was there Level 5 energy?
