Email I just received:
Dear Friends:
When I first came to Syracuse as an 18-year-old kid from Scranton, Pennsylvania, I had no idea what this place would mean to me. I just knew I wanted to compete, I wanted to win and I wanted to make people proud. Our University gave me everything. A championship. A degree. A career. A family. And when my playing days were over, it gave me the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Orange student-athletes grow into young men I’m genuinely proud of.
I spent the last two years at Siena University and I’m grateful for every minute of my time there. But know this: I have always been Orange.
And now I’m back. And I am ready to work.
Here’s what I need you to know: this program has everything it takes to compete at the highest level. The talent. The history. The fan base. The Dome. But competing at the top takes resources and urgency. The transfer portal opens in two weeks. Recruiting never stops. The work to build a roster that can win championships begins today.
That’s why I’m asking you, personally, to make a gift to Syracuse Men’s Basketball on Giving Day today, Tuesday, March 24.
I know what it means when this community shows up. I felt it as a player every time we ran out of that tunnel. I felt it on the road when I’d hear “Let’s Go Orange” in an opposing arena. I need recruits and their families to feel it too. I need them to see and experience how this fan base is unlike anything else in college basketball.
Whether you give $3 for the number I wore, $44 for the number so many greats wore, $2,003 for the year we won the national championship, or whatever you can—it matters. Every single gift is a statement that Orange Nation is behind this program.
I didn’t come back to be comfortable. I came back to win. Help me do that.
Make your Giving Day gift today at givingday.syr.edu/givetombb.
I’ll see you in the Dome.
Gerry McNamara ’06
Head Coach, Syracuse Men’s Basketball
just imagine a school like VCU or Utah state that gets their coaches poached seemingly every yearLittle sad for Siena. Seems that they had things rolling for next year under GMac. Now its back searching for a coach, knowing their top player(s) will be following GMac to Syracuse.
I’m busy today. I asked SU to push the presser off until next week.
You guys and gals think Gerry will win the presser or nah.
I’m sure he loved it……..Anyone know how Red took his firing and the hiring of Gmac?
I'm sure he is super happy and proud.Anyone know how Red took his firing and the hiring of Gmac?
JB didn't focus on the transition because he thought he'd never leave. Other people didn't agree and he wasn't ready for a transition.I heard that Duke strategically planned for the hand off from K to Scheyer for three years. They made sure that the next coach (I’m sure they knew K wanted Scheyer) had all the resources in place to succeed from day one. Additional staff, etc. Duke did everything right to ensure the product didn’t drop off. Of course, they are Duke and were on top when K left. SU was a totally different story. JB didn’t really focus on the transition, and the school seemed to do nothing to prepare for it. And worse, we were not in a very good place when the baton was forcibly passed.
Hopefully, this is our chance to right the wrongs of three years ago. Get Gerry the resources he’s needs and let er rip!
Hopefully we get some Team Final guys. And like Gerry he’s always injured.Love this guy, hope he continues on with coaching.
I’m very curious to see if this is true with guys making 7 figures.I don’t see him having a Hofstra kind of loss, he is an intense dude who won’t let players slack. Vegas? Well, let’s see what the roster looks like and if we draw a muderers row all three games like this year
He doesn’t get the interview without being legacy.I know that many say that Gerry wouldn’t have gotten the job had he not played at SU but I’m going to push back on that a bit.
I freely admit that he likely would not have been initially considered nor interviewed if not for his history with SU. I have heard Gerry speak and I think that it is quite possible, in fact likely, that he blew the doors off during his interview. He knows the good, bad, and ugly at SU and he may well have come in with a vision and a gameplan to achieve that vision. And it may also have been impressive enough to separate the metaphorical financial panties from the donors.
I hired a lot of managers in my career. Often, the candidates would simply point to their resumes and track records. That is fine, but the ones who always impressed me were the ones who also did their homework on the position and came in with a vision and plan for success. It would not surprise me that Gerry did the same.
Let’s not forget that Fran Brown was basically a journeyman position coach with a reputation for being a great recruiter. There were likely any number of candidates with more experience as a head coach or coordinator. And yet Fran blew AW away during his interview and convinced him that he was the man.
I would not be surprised if Gerry did the same thing.
No idea what that meansMy daughter picked 88 and even though I’m a history teacher it took me until this year (4 years) to say, oh crap, hopefully the other parents don’t think we’re extremists. She plays in the Albany area but we drive an hour from a rural area so everyone knows we live in the middle of nowhere lol. “Middle of nowhere” to them.
Enter "what is the relationship between the number 88 and extremists" in a Google or AI search. No idea what that means
I hope so Dick. Always a big fan of Gerry. I hope the promised money comes through for him. The goalposts seemed to have moved the past few days from the money is there for Gerry, to now help Gerry be successful by pledging your donation based on the numerous notifications I got today.I know that many say that Gerry wouldn’t have gotten the job had he not played at SU but I’m going to push back on that a bit.
