i wonder if he has ever practiced being double teamed in practiceHe has to learn to use the double team to get teammates open looks.
Yup, Virginia showed all game who the was going to come over and double him and Jesse never adjusted to find the open manHe has to learn to use the double team to get teammates open looks.
Hard when nobody is moving off the ball. The only way to have them stop doubling teaming you is making them pay, nobody helped Jesse at all. Was he good? Not at all, but I sympathize. He has to learn to use the double team to get teammates open looks.
You can pass the ball when you’re doubled. Not sure he fully grasps that
You can’t when the forward who’s defender just stands in no man’s land behind him and everyone else is still covered. Jesse was in a rough spot, not a good game but wasn’t made easy for him.You can pass the ball when you’re doubled. Not sure he fully grasps that
The problem, as I understand it, is the coach didn’t shoot and dribble the ball for him.Ouch! When we needed him most
Agreed. Many on this board have overrated him or expected him to be something he’s not.The expectations for Jesse are too high. It's been so long since we had a great big man that we want to think he's elite. He's got some nice tools, but he's not elite. He'd be a great piece on a team like the 2010 team, but we don't have those other pieces on this team.
It's almost as if it surprised him. There is no way they didn't game plan for UVA to double down, right? He has to learn to use the double team to get teammates open looks.
Thanks for your scout of team practices. Anything else.i wonder if he has ever practiced being double teamed in practice
doubt it
Notice you didn’t reply that way to Jake’s post. Thanks for your scout of team practices. Anything else.
Yes he's very easy to move off his spot. He's improved and gotten stronger but still pretty weak in his base. He had a rough day and even fell on and fouled Mintz which drew an inadvertant whistle which the refs immediately knew the foul call was wrong. He looked unprepared for the double teams. UVA did a good job pushing him a step further than his comfort zone in the post. Then aggressively sending the double.
He has to recognize where the double is coming from and look to find the open man or just kicking it back out to reset.
The fact that the double came so early, he should have been able to make them pay.
He’ll see film on this and hopefully adjust. I don’t think our staff expected it or prepped him for it.
He had a really smooth drive and dish to Brown for a dunk early in the game too.He did it late in the game dumping it to Brown I think.
UVA has doubled guys down there since Bennett has been there. The fact we weren’t ready for it is absurd. He looked unprepared for the double teams. UVA did a good job pushing him a step further than his comfort zone in the post. Then aggressively sending the double.

Teams have been playing Jessie straight up all year long. Especially teams with size…which UVA has. It's almost as if it surprised him. There is no way they didn't game plan for UVA to double down, right?
You're right, at a minimum Jesse needs to let the double team get to him and then pass out of it. To be fair, UVA is almost always fundamentally perfect at doubling down and rotating over to cover the man who "should" be open.
So, it's a 2 fold issue. There's Jesse's part and then the instant recognition by the guy whose man is leaving him to double Jesse. It's not just a Jesse problem, but he doesn't handle it well at all.
