JJ Starling Transferring to Syracuse

No disrespect to JJ, but Judah was by far the better player last year. It’s a bit weird to me to see so many analysts say JJ is ranked ahead of him. It appears they’re still looking at last years recruiting rankings.
I can see it (both are excellent). Starling's game is more well-rounded. He has a better jumper and he can get it off on his own (and from much greater range). He is also a bit more inclusive of others with the ball in his hands.

Judah's more spectacular and sports elite athleticism (no shade on Starling intended!). The jumper is trending well, but not to J.J.'s level when healthy. Judah is also better going to the hoop (might be nation's best among guards), but again, don't sleep on J.J. there.

What'll be interesting, to me, is who is a better defender? I think they'll both be well above grade, but have to see it. Should be fun.

Starling was even worse on D for Notre Dame. I think he’s going to get better, but the expectations for JJ are through the roof right now. He has yet to perform to the level that people in this board expect from him. I think he can, but he hasn’t yet.
I hope Lampkin works, but the conversation about him and Maliq is eerily similar to the conversation about Girard and JJ last offseason. I need to see it to believe it. We keep downgrading. I think Red needs to bring in someone who can coach defense because all of these guys are pathetically bad on that end.

Did you just answer yourself in a thread about someone else in order to make the same point you are making in other threads about Lampkin?

I think it's a great point.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic about a player or coach or really anything to do with the program. But too many people lash out at those that might not have the same viewpoint.

I expect JJ to have a big year and be a lot better, but I also thought Judah would figure out how to shoot 3s last year, so who knows. Going with my first thought anyway.

Also, when looking at JJ's shooting percentages, how many missed shots were grenades dumped on him with 2 seconds on the shot clock? I've done no analysis, but based on my memory, I felt like that happened a lot. Judah dribbled the ball and then dumped it on JJ right before the buzzer.

Not many, he was too busy driving into walls and getting fouled.

Still trying to figure out how Red got 20 out of that team.

Agreed. I'd be curious to what win total other coaches would get, I truly believe 75% of coaches couldn't have pulled 20 out of a hat.

For sure! I felt like the team was on the edge of packing it in and basically loosing out 3 times but we always regrouped and competed. That's a credit to Red and the kids.

As for JJ this year I feel like he will have a better season due to a better fit with the personal and his role. He could also have a great season if he improves his shooting which is a possibility that's out there.

This roster does fit around JJs game perfectly. A pass first PG; a SF who is an elite 3PT shooter who’s man will rarely help off him; a veteran big who is a very good passer and also comfortable playing on the perimeter.

This year is set up for JJ to really explode. Bell will get his (and could be the leading scorer) but JJ is going to have the ball in his hands a lot.

3rd year in the conference for him

Yeah, I think it's going to be his team next year.

Ah.

I’m not touching that..

Better than nice in my opinion!

Judah and JJ did not complement each other at all. Our offense is gonna be legit next year with Carlos running things.

Which is good, because we have to score on every possession lol.
I think defense starts in the middle, and we were a donut a lot of last season. Brown is a nice player, I wish he were here still. But his ability to play defense at center was severely compromised by his size.

We're going to be so much better off with 6'11" 300lbs and 7'4" 260lbs in the middle next season. You won't be able to get by a guard or forward on the perimeter and get right to the basket anymore.

After that, we just have to hope that our rebounding improvement makes up for slow perimeter defenders.

My guess is that Freeman will be much better at rebounding than Taylor, and junior Bell will be better than sophomore Bell.

I'm optimistic our defense will be better based on personnel.

I also really think the new assistant coach was hired for his defensive prowess.

JJ is a very good driver. Rewatch the North Carolina game, the Oregon game and others and you’ll see the potential. And why are you so stuck believing that players can’t improve facets of their game?
