And I am pleased, of course, in the main given the college landscape and circumstances . But, getting accustomed to watching ACC games, including those in which SU plays, is a monumental task.

I have always loathed the ACC, and taken absolute zero enjoyment from watching the random ACC contest (hoop or gridiron) other than from the basic preference of college over pro sports. So, this season I committed to watching some ACC basketball games as, well, practice for the future. Practice sessions so far are as difficult as expected. Watching Duke-Virginia now does absolutely nothing for me. Zero. And having to listen to the homer ACC Vitale/Patric combo causes severe nausea. I felt so much more from watching, for example, Providence-Seton Hall and UConn-Rutgers this past Saturday.

Big East Contests will sorely be missed by me. I intend to thoroughly enjoy them while they last. Anybody with me? Can we form a therapy group?

I thought it was a good game. We'll eventually look at the Ga Tech's and Virginia's like Providence and Seton Hall.

In 10 years you will be glued to the TV to watch Maryland vs. Clemson like you are watching Villanova vs. Providence. At least I know I will be. I'm not saying you or I will be an ACC homer like a lot of us are Big East homers but will be into the conference, games, results, etc just like you are now.

I will watch DePaul vs. USF because its the Big East, we play these teams and it could impact us. It will be no different when we join the ACC.

It will take some time but we will all get used to it.

Pride in Big East basketball ...it was a badge of honor to have played in the Big East. Most, if not all SU fans loved the BE BB conference. I'll miss it and it'll be hard for me to be an ACC homer in the same way I was a BE homer.

It'll be interesting.

I follow the Big East because I either hate certain programs - UConn, G'Town, and Pitt - or like certain coaches - Pitino, Wright, Huggins (and Beilein before him), Brey, and Lavin.

Rutgers hiring Rice has me torn since I really like Rice, but can't bring myself to root for Rutgers.

I think Providence, Seton Hall, and Marquette have good coaches as well, but I just can't be bothered to follow them routinely.

The Big East has the best coaches top-to-bottom in the country. And the Big Ten has the second best collection of coaches.

Like in football, the ACC is lacking in good coaching overall.

It's going to take me a while before I care about SU playing any other team in basketball not named Duke, UNC, or Pitt.

Football is a different story, however. ;)

Cheers,
Neil

there are but 2 acc teams that i will ever care about. the rest suk. there will be 2 divisions: atlantic and coastal and we will be atlantic. Puke and NC will be coastal.

I agree with your assessment Marsh.

Will definitely miss the BET in the Garden
But what about when you get to watch the ACC tourney at the Garden? Swofford has already talked about rotating the tournament between Carolina/Atlanta/NYC. I know its not the same, and perhaps it will be at the Barclay Center if the Big East remains viable enough to keep their tourney at MSG, but imagine a semi-final night in NYC with Syracuse/Duke/UNC.....thats gonna be fun!

It'll take some getting used to, and the biggest losses will be the BET every year at MSG, and having so many road games close to NYC, but I think most people will get over it pretty quickly.

Pardon me for my ignorance, but does anyone know what kind of money we will be guranted for bball TV revenue and how that compares to what we are pulling now? I believe I have heard a 20 mil number, but I think that was football. There has to be some kind of added revenue for dealing with this:

Screw the Big East, I'll miss the tournament at the Garden, but I'll take the games up and down the east coast where our fans dominate opposing arenas, playing Duke and UNC, and watching the Big East descend into a combination of the new Conference USA and new Atlantic 10 until the inevitable split.

The Big East died a long time ago. Anyone who says they cared about games involving Cincitucky, Hillsborough CC, DePaul et al but says they think they'll have a hard time caring about games involving Clemson and Florida State doesn't know he's talking about.

Put some money on the random ACC games and all of sudden they become much more interesting.

I generally agree, however, I've been living in the Charlotte area for some 18 years and watching some of these ACC games is just brutal. One thing I'm really looking forward to is once SU is in the ACC, I won't have to worry about missing some big SU game that's occasionally aired by CBS on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Many times, the local affiliate doesn't show the national/regional CBS game, but rather the contractual Jefferson Pilot/Raycom Sports games. So instead of getting SU-UConn or SU-L'ville, you're stuck with Florida State vs. Clemson or VT vs Wake Forest, etc. It's darn right agonizing.

Great post OP and though the move did have to happen, I'll be happy to join group therapy for those who are disappointed that SU will be playing in an inferior hoops league. I don't watch every Big East game, I mean Usf/RU, Depaul/PC does nothing for me, but games between gtown/marq/wv/lville/ucon/nova (this yr notwithstanding) do, and after Duke/UNC, the rest of the ACC has not been on that level for some time.

Do we really care about Hall, Prov, Rutg, WVU, Marq, DePaul, Lville, Cinci, ND and SFU bball? I think we will find out very quickly when they are not in our conference that we simply do nat care that much about them much like we are about ACC or BIG10 bball now. Our interest in these teams will be replaced by the ACC teams because we will be playing them not the old BE teams. There are even s0me really good programsin that group but if we don't play them I think our interest will disappear and we won't be scheduling any of those teams OOC.

I care about St. Johns only because of the NY connection and I expect we will play them anually @ MSG after we move to the ACC.

I care about Gtown and Uconn because they are our most hated rivals and that rivalry has been cultivated for so long it will always be there. I expect to play Gtown once a season alternating home and home. I doubt we will schedule Uconn OOC.

Pitt going with us.

Nova is another team i expect to play mainly for recruiting reasons as we do well in Philly and so I expect the same set up as Gtown. We will play one of them on the road every season and one at home.

I think the only actual rival we end up losing is Uconn, (Duke and UNC will replace the Uconn rivalry) the rest of the original BE teams we will either play regularly (OOC or in the ACC) or they are teams that never really mattered in the grand scheme of things to us anyways other than they were in the BE.
All the add on BE teams of late will be as meaningless to us as they were before.

Thats the way I see it.

I am a therapist. I would lead the group, but I need the help myself! Furthermore (as I have whined frequently on this forum), I have many friends and a brother who are hard core Duke and Carolina fans, and I expect the strain on our relationships to be severe. Only God can help me now.

As a grad of SU and football/basketball season ticket holder, I very much miss the Big East Conference, but then I've missed it since the first raid. What I loved about going to the Garden to see Pearl, Mullin, & Ewing died a long time ago.

As a grad of Carolina, as for the ACC, the conference I loved to watch at Carmichael (like Manley without the dirt) also changed dramatically when South Carolina left and Georgia Tech and Florida State came in (albeit separated by several years). Also, the additions of Virginia Tech & Miami, as we all remember from their Big East entry, do/did nothing for basketball. (And Boston College continues to bottom out.)

Bottom line, both conferences are not what they once were due to football (and I do love football). My belief is that with SU & Pitt joining (and maybe UConn & ? in the future), the ACC will be the stronger and more interesting league. Interestingly enough, I think the ACC's move was as much about strengthening basketball as it was about renegotiating the football. I think ultimately everyone will see it as a win-win. I look forward to the day that I love the conference as much as I loved the "old Big East" and the "old ACC".

OMG, do I have to steal and copy the application pictures. Classic! And it's been going on for years. (I was there for K's first year -- just 8 miles down the road in the Southern part of heaven that is Chapel Hill.)

I've been reading the posts on this board looking down at the remaining big east members with contempt and all the screw the big east comments and trying to put myself in your shoes to no avail. I'm glad for this thread that shows how I would feel if we were on the life raft. Nostalgic and forlorn for the death of what was a great basketball conference. It still would be if not for this wave of departure, and if you didn't light the fuse maybe someone else inevitably would have, but how some of your fanbase can look at the burning wreckage and say who would want to play in a place like that while still holding the gas can is beyond me. Choice or no choice, you guys hammered the nail in the coffin. It's not something that warrants an apology, just an ackowldgement by those throwing ACC parades and spitting on what's left of the BE.
I think if you actually read the posts on this board, you will find a lot of angst and sadness amongst Syracuse fans regarding departing the Big East.

Syracuse has been the heart and soul of the conference from day one. We (SU fans) were as invested in it, if not moreso, than any other BE fanbase. Not sure if you follow the BE closely, but if you do, you know that SU fans dominate attendance at the BET each season, and have since day one.

For most SU fans, the last season or two in the BE are going to be bittersweet. Many of us will greatly miss the conference we helped found and build. But as Billy Joel once said, we didn't start the fire. We were fortunate to escape from a burning building that was about to collapse. If you really think the BE was going to get on equal footing with the power conferences if only SU and Pitt had stayed, you are hopefully naive.

The fact of the matter is that everyone who has had a chance to leave the conference since it was founded has left. You can't have a conference that is stable long term when no one wants to be in it. Except maybe the schools in even more dire circumstances (i.e. non-BCS conferences).

Good luck to UConn finding a decent home someday. I will miss the rivalries we had in the BE and hope we can continue to play some BE schools once we are in the ACC.

Screw the Big East. Good riddance.
