Juan Castillo: New OL Coach

Does he do card tricks?

Well we haven’t had anyone from his previous stops come on here yet and say how awful he is……so that’s a step in the right direction
I mean - you have a point, and we tried to convince ourselves that it wouldn’t be like this there….and then it was like that here lol.

So cautiously optimistic with Castillo - at the least the guy sounds like a relentless workhorse so it won’t be for lack of effort.

Sounds like a solid hire. SU needs this group to improve their footwork and communication.

One thing that I like to see is to clear the lanes for Angeli to throw and minimize the batted balls.

I have no clue how to judge OL coaches, let alone if the hiring of one is a good move.

If he can drag the carcass of this OL from hideous to mildly OK it’ll be a huge win.
You should buy me a beer.

Have I got a story for you!!!

I'm a lifelong Eagles fan and I was covering the Eagles when Castillo was there. He was widely considered one of the top few OL coaches in the NFL, if not the best. They definitely drafted a lot of OL in the early rounds, but Hank Fraley stands out as an undrafted guy he coached up into an above average NFL starter.

I'm not sure why he's bounced around in a bit of a weird career trajectory these last couple years, but he's probably one of the top 10 OL coaches in the NFL and CFB combined. Amazing hire.

(Terrible DC, though. He talked Andy Reid into that one and it was a disaster. He almost certainly has no idea who I am, but I actually asked the question in a post-game interview that resulted in an answer that got him fired. I briefly felt bad because he's a hard worker and seems like a great person, but it worked out great for him because he landed in Baltimore mid-season and won a ring.)

This hire should help us immediately if we're looking for OL in the portal. Anyone looking to get coached up to improve their draft stock would be fortunate to be coached by Juan.

I remember thinking Andy was nuts making him DC.
Great OL guy, horrific DC. Every bit as bad as Robinson
As far as I know, he never coached defense again

Well, that's what we were missing last year. If the guy was an O Line coach for the Eagles for over a decade, you have to assume he is adequate at teaching both run blocking and pass blocking technique.
Yeah. I believe I saw a stat once that at times during the McNabb years their run/pass ratio was 35:65. Reid wouldn't have an oline coach that couldn't pass block.

He had 5 different guys gain 1,000 yards in his time with the Eagles - Ricky Watters (3x), Duce Staley (3x), Brian Westbrook (2x) and LeSean McCoy (2x). That's a pretty good sign.

Plus, 7 of those 10 1,000 yard rushers were when McNabb was the QB.

That's impressive considering how pass heavy Reid likes to have his offenses.

Watters was before Castillo and only one of McCoy's 1K years was with Castillo. McCoy's rookie year was 09, he got 1K in 2010.

But they were very pass-heavy during Reid's tenure, and often had a shared load in the backfield.

They also had the best screen game in the league that whole time.
